Hotpoint Refrigerator/Freezer Combination Operating Instructions

These instructions provide essential information for the safe installation, use, and care of your Hotpoint Refrigerator/Freezer Combination appliance. Please read them carefully and keep them for future reference.

Installation

Before operating the appliance, please read these instructions carefully. Keep them for future reference and pass them on to any new owners.

Positioning and Connection

Positioning:

  • Place the appliance in a well-ventilated, humidity-free room.
  • Do not obstruct the rear fan grills; the compressor and condenser require good ventilation for efficient operation and energy saving.
  • Ensure at least 10 cm clearance between the top of the appliance and any furniture above it, and at least 5 cm between the sides and any furniture or side walls.
  • Keep the appliance away from heat sources such as direct sunlight or electric stoves.
  • Use the supplied spacers (in the installation kit) to maintain the correct distance between the appliance and the wall behind it.

Levelling:

  • Install the appliance on a level and rigid floor.
  • If the floor is not perfectly horizontal, adjust the single foot at the front of the appliance by tightening or loosening it.

Electrical Connections:

  • After transporting the appliance, place it vertically and wait at least 3 hours before connecting it to the mains electricity.
  • Ensure the appliance is earthed and the plug complies with legal requirements.
  • The socket must be capable of withstanding the appliance's maximum power (indicated on the data plate, e.g., 150 W).
  • The voltage must be within the range specified on the data plate (e.g., 220-240V).
  • The socket must be compatible with the appliance's plug. If not, consult an authorised technician. Do not use extension cords or multiple sockets.
  • Once installed, the power supply cable and socket must be easily accessible. The cable must not be bent or compressed.
  • The cable should be checked regularly and replaced only by authorised technicians.

Plug Safety:

  • Your appliance is supplied with a 13amp fused plug for immediate use.
  • WARNING: THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED.
  • Replacing Fuse Covers: Use only a 13amp ASTA approved fuse to BS 1362. Ensure the fuse cover is refitted. If the fuse cover is lost, do not use the plug until a replacement is obtained. Replacement covers must match the original colour marking.
  • Changing the Plug: If removing the original moulded plug, replace it with a fused 13amp rewireable plug bearing the BSI mark of approval, or wire the mains cable directly into a 13amp cable outlet controlled by a switch (BS 5733) accessible without moving the appliance.
  • Disposing of the Plug: If the supplied plug does not fit your socket, cut it off and dispose of it safely, removing the fuse. WARNING: Do not insert the discarded plug into a socket elsewhere to avoid electric shock.

Fitting a New Plug:

IMPORTANT: Mains lead wires are coloured according to the following code: Green and Yellow (Earth), Blue (Neutral), Brown (Live).

If wire colours do not match plug terminal markings:

  • Connect Green and Yellow wire to the terminal marked 'E' or coloured Green and Yellow.
  • Connect Brown wire to the terminal marked 'L' or coloured red or brown.
  • Connect Blue wire to the terminal marked 'N' or coloured black or blue.

A 13amp plug (BS 1363) requires a 13amp fuse. A 15amp plug requires a 15amp fuse. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure about the electrical supply.

CE Marking confirms compliance with EEC directives: Low Voltage Equipment (73/23/EEC & 93/68 EEC) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (89/336/EEC, 92/31/EEC & 93/68/EEC).

Door Reversal

Warning: Before attempting door reversal, switch off the electrical supply and unplug the appliance. Remove loose items and store food in insulated containers. You may need assistance to lay the appliance on its back on protective material.

Remove the doors:

  1. Lay the appliance on its back.
  2. Unscrew and remove the bottom hinge.
  3. Slightly open the bottom door, slide it downwards, and carefully place it aside.
  4. Remove the centre hinge and spacer (if fitted). Slightly open the top door, slide it downwards, and carefully place it aside.
  5. The hinge pin will be removed and fixed to the opposite side.
  6. Use a thin, blunt instrument to remove the top and bottom hinge bushes and blanking plugs from the doors. Take care not to mark the door handle. Reposition the blanking plugs and bushes on the opposite side.
  7. Fit the provided blanking plugs into the two centre hinge holes on the right-hand side.
  8. Before changing hinge placement from right to left, the left side panel should be disassembled, and after changing the hinge, it should be reassembled on the right side panel.

Replacing the doors:

  1. Slide the top door upwards and locate the top hinge pin into the door bush. Reposition the centre hinge on the opposite side.
  2. Carefully slide the bottom door upwards into the centre hinge pin.
  3. Unscrew the bottom hinge pin and refit it on the opposite side.
  4. Fit the bottom hinge, ensuring the door is aligned with the cabinet.
  5. Carefully stand the appliance upright in its required location and ensure it is sitting level on the floor.
  6. Open and close the doors, checking that the gasket makes a good seal without any gaps.

Note: Replace loose items/fittings back into the appliance and leave for at least 15 minutes before switching back on.

Description of the Appliance

Overall View:

The appliance features the following components:

Note: Some features may vary by model.

Start-up and Use

Starting the Appliance:

  1. Follow the installation instructions.
  2. Before connecting, clean the compartments and accessories with lukewarm water and bicarbonate of soda.
  3. Insert the plug into the socket and ensure the POWER indicator light illuminates.
  4. Turn the TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENT knob to an average setting.
  5. After a few hours, the refrigerator will reach the correct temperature, and you can begin loading food.

Using the Refrigerator to its Full Potential:

The internal temperature adjusts automatically based on the thermostat knob setting (1=warmest, 5=coldest). A medium position is recommended.

The cooling section is at the back wall of the refrigerator compartment. Frost or water droplets on the back wall during operation are normal.

Setting the knob to high values with large quantities of food or high ambient temperatures can lead to excessive frost and increased energy consumption. Adjust to lower values if this occurs (defrosting will happen automatically).

In static appliances, cold air naturally circulates downwards. For optimal food storage:

Food Storage Arrangement:

FoodArrangement Inside the Refrigerator
Fresh fish and meatAbove the fruit and vegetable bins
Cooked foodOn any shelf
Fresh cheeseOn any shelf
Salami, loaves of bread, chocolateOn any shelf
Fruit and vegetablesIn the fruit and vegetable compartment bins
EggsOn the shelf provided
Butter and margarineOn the shelf provided
Bottles, drinks, milkOn the shelves provided

Using the Freezer to its Full Potential:

Ice Tray:

The ice tray is located on the top part of the freezer drawers for hygiene. It includes a lid to prevent water spillage during filling.

  1. Pull out the tray by pushing it up. Ensure it is empty and fill with water through the opening, not exceeding the MAX WATER LEVEL.
  2. Excess water can prevent ice cube dispensing. If this occurs, wait for the ice to melt and empty the tray.
  3. Turn the tray 90° to fill each mould with water.
  4. Close the opening with the lid and place the tray back in its housing.
  5. After approximately 8 hours, knock the tray against a hard surface and wet the outside to loosen the ice cubes, then remove them through the opening.

Maintenance and Care

Switching the Appliance Off:

For cleaning and maintenance, disconnect the appliance from the electricity supply. Setting the temperature knobs to 'OFF' does not eliminate all electrical contact.

Cleaning the Appliance:

Avoiding Mould and Unpleasant Odours:

Defrosting the Refrigerator Compartment:

The refrigerator has an automatic defrosting function. Water is channelled to a discharge outlet at the back, where it evaporates due to compressor heat. Regularly clean this discharge hole to ensure proper water flow.

Replacing the Light Bulb:

Unplug the appliance. Access the light bulb by unscrewing the fixing screw (B) located at the back of the lampcover (A). Replace with a similar bulb not exceeding 15W.
