6. Connection of Safety Devices

Entrapment Protection: To comply with UL325, every entrapment zone must be protected by two independent entrapment protection devices. One device is inherent in the FAAC system; the other can be external, like a photocell or edge sensor.

Opening Safety Devices: Active during opening movement, protecting the area between leaves and obstacles against entrapment risk.

Closing Safety Devices: Active during closing movement, protecting the closing area against entrapment risk.

Monitored Devices: UL325 requires all external entrapment protection devices to be monitored for presence and correct operation. Closing safety devices are always monitored. Note: One closing safety device must always be connected for the system to function.

Monitoring of Opening Safety Devices: Enable this function in advanced programming by setting the "FS" parameter to "Active".

Simple Learning: (+ ≈ 1 s.
Complete Learning: (+ > 3 s.

(*) For hydraulic operators, set force to the maximum level.

8. Programming

Programming the 455D Control Board involves two parts: BASIC and ADVANCED.

Basic Programming:

Advanced Programming:

The following table shows the sequence of functions accessible in ADVANCED PROGRAMMING:

Display Function Default
MAXIMUM TORQUE AT INITIAL THRUST: The motors operate at maximum torque at the start of movement (useful for heavy leaves).
LAST STROKE AT CLOSING: The motors are activated at full speed for 1 second to facilitate locking of the electric lock.
REVERSING STROKE: Before opening, while the gate is closed, the motors thrust to close for 2 seconds, facilitating electric lock release.
LEAF 2 OPENING DELAY (2 s): Enables delayed start (at opening) of leaf 2, avoiding interference between leaves.
OPENING FAIL SAFE: Enables monitoring of the opening safety photocell before opening. If the test fails, the gate does not open. 4 = Active, = Disabled
PF PRE-FLASHING (5 s): Activates the flashing lamp for 5 seconds before start of movement. 4 = Active, = Disabled
EL ELECTRIC LOCK ON LEAF 2: For using the electric lock on leaf 2 instead of leaf 1. 4 = Active, = Disabled
SP INDICATOR-LIGHT: The output functions as a standard indicator-light (ON at opening and pause, flashing at closing, OFF when gate is closed). Other values: 1=ON when open/pause, OFF otherwise; 2=ON when closed, OFF otherwise. Other values correspond to extra time for courtesy light (1-55 sec, 10 sec-4.1 min).
PH CLOSING PHOTOCELLS REVERSE AT RELEASE: Enables closing photocells to stop movement and reverse at release. Default is immediate reverse. 4 = Active, = Disabled
OP OPENING No. 2 FAIL SAFE: When enabled, the STOP input can be used for a second monitored opening safety device. 4 = Active, = Disabled
AS ASSISTANCE REQUEST: Affects 8s of pre-flashing at every Open pulse (job request) after countdown completion. Useful for scheduled maintenance. 4 = Active, = Disabled
HC CYCLE PROGRAMMING: For setting countdown of system operation cycles (1 to 99 thousand cycles). Used to check board usage or "Assistance request".
EC EXTRA WORK TIME: If reversing occurs and the leaf does not reach its end contact, this function increases work time. 4 = Active, = Disabled

NOTE: Parameter modifications take effect immediately. Exit programming to save changes. If power is lost before exiting, modifications are lost. To restore defaults, press and hold +, -, F simultaneously for 5 seconds.

9. Start-up

LED Indicators: The two-digit display indicates input status when not in "PROGRAMMING" mode. The table below shows LED mapping to inputs.

Operation of the Status Signaling LEDs:

LEDS ON OFF
OP_A Command activated Command inactive
OP_B Command activated Command inactive
STOP Command inactive Command activated
FSWCL Safety devices clear Safety devices triggered
FSWOP Safety devices clear Safety devices triggered
FCA1 (if used) Limit switch free Limit switch triggered
FCC1 (if used) Limit switch free Limit switch triggered
FCC2 (if used) Limit switch free Limit switch triggered
FCA2 (if used) Limit switch free Limit switch triggered

Note: LED ON = closed contact, LED OFF = open contact. Bold indicates status when the gate is closed at rest.

The display shows the status of safety inputs clear and no activation signal present.

Rotation direction and force check:

  1. Program the 455 D control board functions as needed.
  2. Turn power off to the control board.
  3. Release operators and manually move the gate to the mid-point of the opening angle.
  4. Re-lock the operators.
  5. Restore power.
  6. Send an opening command on the OPEN A input and verify gate leaves move towards the open position. (Note: If the first OPEN A pulse starts a closing movement, turn power off and reverse the phases of the electric motor wires on the 455 D control board).
  7. Check motor force setting and adjust if necessary. (Note: For hydraulic operators, set force to maximum level 50).
  8. Stop leaf movement with a pulse on the STOP input or by turning off power.
  9. Release operators, close leaves, and re-lock them.

Opening/closing time is established by a time learning procedure ("simple" or "complete" modes). The "simple" mode does not allow a slow down phase, while the "complete" mode does. Slow down can reduce mechanical stress but may cause issues in high wind conditions.

10. Learning Operating Times

WARNING: Safety devices are disabled during the learning procedure. Avoid crossing the leaf movement area.

Ensure travel limit mechanical stops are present.

SIMPLE LEARNING (Without Slow Down):

  1. Check leaves are closed. Enter "BASIC PROGRAMMING", select TIME LEARNING, and press '+' for 1 second. Display flashes, leaves open.
  2. As leaves reach the opening contact point, provide an OPEN A pulse (key or radio control) to stop movement. Display stops flashing.
  3. Press 'F' to exit and save. Gate is ready.

COMPLETE LEARNING (With Slow Down):

  1. Check leaves are closed. Enter "BASIC PROGRAMMING", select TIME LEARNING, and press '+' for more than 3 seconds. Display flashes, leaf 1 opens.
  2. Perform 8 OPEN A pulses (key or radio control) for the following functions:
    1. Slow down at opening of leaf 1
    2. Leaf 1 stops at opening; leaf 2 begins opening.
    3. Slow down at opening of leaf 2
    4. Leaf 2 stops at opening and immediately begins closing.
    5. Slow down at closing of leaf 2
    6. Leaf 2 stops at closing; leaf 1 begins closing.
    7. Slow down at closing of leaf 1
    8. Leaf 1 stops at closing
  3. When display stops flashing, press 'F' to exit and save. Gate is ready.

Notes:

11. Final Tests

After programming, perform a complete test of the system. Verify operator function, force adjustment, and safety device operation.

After learning, the board adds 3 seconds to programmed time, causing operators to run against stops.

Monitored Safety Test:

IMPORTANT: To ensure safety photocells are monitored, install a temporary jumper on the N.C. output of the photocell and give an OPEN A command. The gate must not move. If it does, check photocell wiring and ensure FAIL SAFE is enabled in Advanced Programming.

12. Operating Modes Detailed Description

This section details various operating modes (Logics E, A, S, EP, AP, SP, B, C) and their behavior with different pulses and safety device activations. Tables 3/a through 3/h provide comprehensive descriptions of each logic's response to OPEN-A, OPEN-B, STOP pulses, and the effect of Opening Safety Devices, Closing Safety Devices, and OP/CL SAFETY DEVICE.
