Uncrating
Upon delivery, inspect the shipping packaging and the machine for any damage. If damage is found, retain the shipping carton for inspection and contact the Nilfisk S/A Customer Service Department immediately to file a freight damage claim. Follow the included unpacking instructions to remove the machine from the pallet.
Important Safety Instructions
This machine is designed for commercial use in environments such as hotels, schools, hospitals, factories, and offices, not for residential housekeeping.
Read all instructions before using.
WARNING! To reduce risk of fire, electric shock, or injury:
- Use only as described in this manual and with manufacturer-recommended attachments.
- Operation is restricted to properly trained and authorized persons.
- This machine is for dry use only and must not be used or stored outdoors in wet conditions.
- Do not allow children to use this machine; close attention is required when used near children.
- Keep sparks, flame, and smoking materials away from batteries. Explosive gases are vented during normal operation.
- Charging batteries produces highly explosive hydrogen gas. Charge only in well-ventilated areas, away from open flame. Do not smoke while charging.
- Remove all jewelry when working near electrical components.
- Turn the key switch OFF (O) and disconnect batteries before servicing electrical components.
- Never work under a machine without safety blocks or stands.
- Do not dispense flammable cleaning agents or operate near them or in areas with flammable liquids.
- Do not clean the machine with a pressure washer.
- This machine is not approved for use on public paths or roads.
- Do not insert objects into openings or use with any opening blocked; ensure adequate airflow.
- Do not use on surfaces with a gradient exceeding the machine's limit.
- Ensure third parties, especially children, are not endangered during operation.
- Before any service, carefully read all relevant instructions.
- Do not leave the machine unattended without turning the key switch OFF (O) and removing the key. The parking brake activates automatically.
- Turn the key switch OFF (O) and remove the key before changing brushes or opening access panels.
- Prevent hair, jewelry, or loose clothing from getting caught in moving parts.
- Do not operate without the dust bag and/or filters in place.
- Do not stand on the pad housing.
- This machine is not suitable for picking up health-endangering dust.
- Batteries must be removed before scrapping the machine. Dispose of batteries according to local environmental regulations.
- Ensure all doors and covers are correctly positioned as per the manual before use.
- Refer to the battery charger OEM product manual for specific warnings.
- This machine is not intended for use by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, including children.
- When on ramps or inclines, avoid sudden stops and abrupt turns. Use low speed on down ramps.
- Observe the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) when loading, driving, lifting, or supporting the machine.

Know Your Machine
This section identifies key components of the Nilfisk UHR 70-1700. Numbers in parentheses correspond to illustrated parts.
Machine Components:

Preparing the Machine for Use
Batteries
If shipped with batteries installed: Ensure batteries are connected (7) and check the Battery Indicator (B). If the green light is OFF, charge the batteries.
If shipped without batteries: Consult an Authorized Nilfisk S/A dealer for recommended batteries. Follow the installation instructions below.
DO NOT install three 12-volt batteries; this affects machine stability.
WARNING! Use extreme caution when working with batteries. Sulfuric acid can cause severe injury. Explosive hydrogen gas is vented from batteries; keep away from ignition sources. Do not install lead-acid batteries in sealed containers. Ensure hydrogen gas can escape.
When Servicing Batteries: Remove jewelry, do not smoke, wear safety gear (glasses, gloves, apron), work in a well-ventilated area, use insulated tools, disconnect the negative cable first when replacing, and connect the negative cable last when installing.
CAUTION! Improper battery installation can severely damage electrical components. Installation should be done by Nilfisk S/A, a qualified electrician, or the battery manufacturer.
Battery Installation Steps:
- Inspect batteries for damage upon arrival. Contact the carrier or manufacturer if damage is found.
- Turn the Master Key Switch (A) OFF and remove the key.
- Open and prop the Battery Compartment Cover (13). Remove battery cables.
- Carefully lift batteries into the compartment and arrange them as shown in FIGURE 1 (typically six 6-volt batteries for a 36V system, 415 Ah, 20 Hr. Rate). Secure batteries towards the back of the machine.
- Install battery cables, ensuring easy access to battery caps for service.
- Tighten battery terminal nuts until snug; do not overtighten.
- Coat terminals with a battery terminal coating spray.
- Place rubber boots over terminals and connect the Battery Connector Assembly (7).
For battery or charger changes, contact your local authorized service center for correct settings.
Installation of the Burnishing Pad
WARNING! Disconnect the machine's Battery Pack Connection (7) via the Emergency Power Disconnect (10) handle before servicing.
CAUTION! Turn the key switch OFF (O) and remove the key before changing brushes or opening access panels.
- Refer to Figure 2. Lift the right side of the Pad Drive Deck (1) until it latches (16) in place.
- Place hand under the Dust Control Shroud (2) and remove the Pad Retainer (4) from the pad holder assembly. Grip the retainer firmly and turn clockwise (right) as it uses a left-hand thread.
- Select a 27-inch (68 cm) diameter Burnishing Pad (AA). Consult your local Nilfisk S/A Distributor for pad options.
- Insert the plastic Pad Retainer (4) into the center of the pad (AA). Reinstall by turning the retainer counter-clockwise (left).
- Important: Turn the retainer until a clicking ratchet sound is heard. This ensures proper tightening by compressing the pad material and drawing the retainer up so it does not strike the floor.
Installation of the Dust Collection Bag
The UHR70-1700 uses dust collection bag PN 56391185.
Refer to Figure 3. Unfold the Dust Collection Bag (5). While holding the Card Board Retainer (AA), insert it over the Collection Tube (BB) located on top of the Pad Drive Deck (1) on the left side of the machine.
NOTE: Never operate the UHR70-1700 without a Dust Collection Bag (5) or the optional Active Dust Control Kit (21) installed. Failure to do so will allow burnishing dust to become airborne. The Active Dust Control Kit (21) operates when the Master Key Switch (A) is ON, the Pad Drive Deck (1) is down, and the FWD/REV Drive Pedal (8) is in the neutral position.
Extra Dust Collection Bags can be stored in the Spare Dust Bag Storage (18). Install the Rubber Strap (CC) to secure the bags.
Operating the Machine
Before Each Use:
- Ensure understanding of operator controls and their functions.
- Turn the Master Key Switch (A) ON (I) and check the Battery Condition Indicator (B). Recharge if the red light is on.
- Verify a new or clean pad is installed.
- Confirm a Dust Collection Bag (5) is installed.
Plan Your Floor Burnishing:
- Pre-sweep or scrub the floor to remove debris, preventing scratches and improving burnishing.
- Arrange work in long, continuous runs with minimal stopping or starting.
- Avoid bumping into obstacles or scraping the machine's sides.
Operating the Machine:
Follow instructions in "Preparing the Machine for Use" and "Before Each Use."
- While seated, adjust the Steering Wheel (11) using the Tilt Steering Wheel Adjuster (9) for a comfortable position.
- Turn the Master Key Switch (A) ON (I). The Battery Condition Indicator (B) and Hour Meter / Error Display (C) will activate.
- To transport the machine, apply even pressure on the front of the FWD/REV Drive Pedal (8) for Forward or the rear for Reverse. The front drive wheel has a built-in electromagnetic brake that engages when the pedal is neutral or the Master Key Switch (A) is OFF. Refer to the Electromagnetic Brake section for manual override.
- At the work area, pad pressure can be adjusted. Turn the Master Key Switch (A) OFF. Hold down the Pad Drive Raise / Lower Switch (E) while turning the Master Key Switch (A) ON. "Adjust" will appear on the Display (C). Release the switch. The display will show "1", "2", or "3" (3 being highest pressure). Press the Pad Drive Raise / Lower Switch (E) to cycle through settings. Turn the Master Key Switch (A) OFF to save the selected setting. This setting is stored in memory.
- Press the FWD/REV Drive Pedal (8) to move the machine forward or in reverse. The machine must be moving before lowering the Pad Drive Deck (1).
- Once moving, lower the Pad Drive Deck (1) by pressing the Pad Drive Raise / Lower Switch (E). The Pad Drive Indicator Light (D) will turn yellow while lowering, then green when the pad is down and begins to turn. To raise the deck, press the same switch. The light will turn red when raising and then turn OFF.
- NOTE: When the operator's foot is removed from the Drive Pedal, it returns to neutral, and the pad motor shuts off after about 1 second (Pad Drive Indicator Light (D) turns yellow). Raise the Pad Drive Deck before stopping the machine to prevent floor damage.
- Begin burnishing with long, straight passes, overlapping each pass by 2-3 inches (5-7 cm). Adjust machine speed based on floor condition; slower speeds may be needed for heavily scuffed floors. The Active Dust Control Kit (21), if installed, operates automatically under specific conditions (Master Key Switch ON, Pad Drive Deck down, FWD/REV Drive Pedal not in neutral).
CAUTION! Stopping the machine with the pad down and running can damage the floor.
- Periodically check the pad for accumulated floor finish and dirt. Turn the pad over to use the clean side or install a clean pad.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: For a fast emergency shutdown, push the Emergency Power Disconnect (10).
Maintenance
After Use:
- Raise the Pad Drive Deck (1) and drive the machine to a service area.
- Turn the Master Key Switch (A) OFF (O) and remove the key.
- Remove the burnishing pad, rinse it with warm water, and hang it to dry completely before reuse.
- Check the Dust Collection Bag (5). If over half full or damaged, remove and replace it with a new bag.
- Review the maintenance schedule and perform any required tasks.
- Wipe the machine with a damp cloth and store it in a clean, dry place.

Lubricating the Machine
Locations requiring periodic oiling include the Steering Wheel Shaft Universal Joint (oil hole or port).
Steering Chain Tension
Inspect once a month and adjust as needed. Refer to the service manual for detailed instructions.
Electromagnetic Brake
The Drive / Steer Wheel Assembly (14) features a built-in electromagnetic brake. This brake engages when the Master Key Switch (A) is OFF or the FWD / REV Drive Pedal (8) is in the neutral position. It can be manually overridden if necessary by inserting a medium to large screwdriver behind the Yoke (AA) as shown in Figure 4. This is intended for situations where the unit needs to be pushed or pulled.
Charging the Batteries
Charge batteries after 1 hour or more of use, or when the Battery Condition Indicator Lights (B) turn red.
To Charge the Batteries:
- IMPORTANT!: Open the Battery Compartment Cover (13) for ventilation.
- Disconnect the Battery Connector Assembly (7) and connect the battery charger to the battery plug.
- Follow the instructions provided with the battery charger.
- After charging, check the fluid level in all battery cells. Add distilled water if necessary to bring the fluid level to the bottom of the filler tubes.
WARNING! Do not fill batteries before charging. Charge in a well-ventilated area. Do not smoke while servicing batteries.
When Servicing Batteries:
- Remove all jewelry.
- Do not smoke.
- Wear safety glasses, rubber gloves, and a rubber apron.
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Do not allow tools to touch more than one battery terminal at a time.
- ALWAYS disconnect the negative (ground) cable first when replacing batteries to prevent sparks.
- ALWAYS connect the negative cable last when installing batteries.
CAUTION! To avoid damage to floor surfaces, wipe water and acid from the top of the batteries after charging.
Checking the Battery Water Level
Check battery water levels at least once a week. After charging, remove vent caps and check each cell. Use distilled or demineralized water to fill cells to the level indicator (or 10 mm above separators). DO NOT over-fill.
CAUTION! Acid can spill if batteries are overfilled. Tighten vent caps. Wash battery tops with a baking soda and water solution (2 tbsp baking soda to 1 liter water).
Service Note: A drain plug is located in the bottom of the battery compartment.
General Machine Troubleshooting
Operator Display Panel Status Lights:
Hour Meter / Error Display (C): If an error code is displayed ("Err" followed by a code), consult the Service Manual for fault descriptions and corrective actions.
Swirl Marks:
- Floor not clean.
- Area not properly swept (debris in pad or brush).
- Improper pad for the job.
- Machine moving too fast.
Circles on the Floor:
- Machine standing still while the pad is running.
Floor Finish Removed:
- Pad is too aggressive.
- Machine moving too slowly.
Machine Wobbles During Operation:
- Defective pad (uneven density).
- Pad not properly seated in the pad holder bristles.
- Padholder is out of balance; replace it.
Machine Does Not Run:
- Check Emergency Power Disconnect (10).
- Check operator seat safety switch (12).
- Check for error fault codes in main and speed controllers (refer to service manual).
- Foot Pedal Fault: Caused by activating the FWD/REV Drive Pedal (8) before turning on the Master Key Switch (A). To clear: Turn key switch off, wait for display to clear, then turn key switch back on.
