2006 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Standard Police (EFI) Owner's Manual

Safety First

This manual provides essential operating and maintenance instructions for your new motorcycle, emphasizing personal safety. It is crucial to read and follow all guidelines, including road rules and specific riding tips. Before starting the engine, always perform a thorough check of all controls, including brakes, clutch, shifter, and throttle, as well as fuel and oil supply.

Important Safety Warnings:

  • Avoid aftermarket parts and custom modifications that can affect performance and handling. Use only Harley-Davidson approved parts and accessories to maintain warranty.
  • Always stop the engine when refueling or servicing the fuel system. Never smoke or allow open flames near gasoline due to its extreme flammability.
  • Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off. Close the fuel supply valve when the engine is not running and do not overfill the tank.
  • Be aware of potential hazards from exhaust fumes, lead in wheel weights, and the jiffy stand's locking mechanism. Ensure the jiffy stand is fully retracted before riding.
  • New motorcycles require a break-in procedure. Operate at moderate speeds and out of traffic until familiar with the motorcycle's characteristics.
  • Defensive riding is paramount. Always wear approved safety gear, including a helmet and protective clothing.
  • Avoid contact with the hot exhaust system.
  • When carrying passengers, provide clear instructions on proper riding procedures.
  • Protect your motorcycle against theft by locking the steering head and removing the ignition key.
  • Never operate the motorcycle under the influence of fatigue, alcohol, or drugs.
  • Maintain the motorcycle in proper operating condition, paying attention to tire inflation, tread, wheel bearings, and steering head bearings.
  • Do not operate the vehicle with locked forks, as this restricts turning ability.
  • Perform regular maintenance as indicated in the service interval table.
  • Do not operate with loose, worn, or damaged steering or suspension systems.
  • Regularly inspect shock absorbers and front forks for any damage or leaks.
  • Use Harley-Davidson replacement fasteners for optimal performance and safety.
  • Ensure tires are properly inflated, balanced, and have adequate tread.
  • Do not exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR).
  • Do not tow a disabled motorcycle or pull a trailer, as this can adversely affect stability and handling.
  • Handle brake fluid with care to avoid eye irritation or ingestion.
  • Batteries contain lead and lead compounds; wash hands after handling.
  • Consult a Harley-Davidson dealer for any questions or problems related to motorcycle operation.
  • Do not open storage compartments while riding, as distractions can lead to loss of control.

Rules of the Road

Adhere to traffic laws and safe riding practices:

  • Keep to the right side of the road centerline.
  • Always sound your horn, use turn signals, and exercise caution when passing.
  • At intersections, yield the right-of-way to vehicles on your right.
  • Always signal when stopping, turning, or passing.
  • Obey all traffic signs, including slow down signs near schools and caution signs at railroad crossings.
  • Signal at least 100 feet before turning left and move to the centerline before entering the intersection.
  • Never anticipate traffic lights; slow down and wait for the light to change.
  • Never run through a yellow or red traffic light.
  • Watch for pedestrians, animals, and other vehicles when turning.
  • Signal before entering moving traffic from a curb or parking area.
  • Ensure your license plate is properly installed and visible.
  • Ride at a safe speed consistent with road conditions, paying attention to whether the road is dry, oily, icy, or wet.
  • Watch for debris such as leaves or loose gravel.
  • Adjust speed and driving habits according to weather and traffic conditions.

Accessories and Cargo

Harley-Davidson Motor Company cannot test all accessories. The rider is responsible for safe operation when installing accessories or carrying additional weight. Improper loading or installation can affect stability and handling. Do not exceed GVWR or GAWR. Ensure cargo is secure and does not shift. Accessories that alter the riding position may affect reaction time and handling. Additional electrical equipment can overload the system.

Front and/or rear guards offer limited leg and cosmetic protection but are not intended for collision protection. Large surfaces like fairings and windshields can affect handling; use only genuine Harley-Davidson items designed for the specific model.

Only Touring Harley-Davidson Motorcycles are suitable for sidecar use. Consult a Harley-Davidson dealer.
