Introduction
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing and setting up your Wemo Smart Light Switch. It covers what's included, what you'll need, the installation process, connecting to Apple HomeKit, and basic troubleshooting.
What's Included
- Cover plate: [Cover plate]
- Light switch and screws: [Light switch and screws]
- Jumper wire and wire nut: (for step 7) [Jumper wire and wire nut]
- Wire label: [Wire label] (Only needed if replacing a 3-way switch)
What You'll Need
For Setup and Control
- An iPhone or iPad running the latest iOS for setup and control.
- A Home hub (e.g., Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad) to access devices when away from home. Learn more at support.apple.com/en-us/HT207057.
For Installation
- Neutral wire: Your house must have a neutral wire (typically white) for the Wemo Smart Light Switch to function. If you do not have one, your house is not compatible.
Tools
- Phillips screwdriver [Phillips screwdriver]
- Flat-head screwdriver [Flat-head screwdriver]
- Pliers/Wire strippers [Pliers/Wire strippers]
- Voltage tester [Voltage tester]
Pro Tip: Before using the voltage tester, test it on a cord that's plugged in to ensure it's working.
Setup Instructions
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
Shut off power to the switch you're replacing at your fuse panel or circuit breaker. The diagram shows a fuse panel and a circuit breaker box, indicating these are the locations to turn off power.
Confirm that power is off
Remove the cover plate from the existing switch. Use a voltage tester [⚡] to test BOTH sides of the switch. You may need to turn off more than one circuit breaker/fuse. ⚠️ WARNING: Risk of electric shock. Incorrect installation could be dangerous or illegal. If you are unfamiliar with electrical work, please call a professional electrician.
Step 2: Pull Out Existing Switch
Unscrew the switch and gently pull it out of the wall. Do not remove any of the wires yet. The diagram shows arrows [➡️] indicating to pull the switch out from the wall.
Pro Tip: Take a picture of the wires in your wall to refer back to later.
Step 3: Look for NEUTRAL Wires
NEUTRAL wires are usually white. If you have them, you can proceed. If you don't have them, your house is not compatible with the Wemo Smart Light Switch. The diagram shows wires in an electrical box, highlighting the neutral wires. A voltage tester [⚡] is shown near the neutral wires, with a warning symbol [⚠️] indicating caution. Test the NEUTRAL wires to ensure there is no power.
Step 4: Identify Your Existing Switch
- Single pole: If one switch controls one light, it is a single-pole switch. (Diagram shows one switch controlling one light ?).
- 3-way: If two switches control the same light, they are both 3-way switches. (Diagram shows two switches controlling one light ?).
- 4-way: If three switches control the same light, the one with 5 screws is a 4-way switch. The other two are 3-way switches. Note: The Wemo Smart Light Switch cannot replace a 4-way switch [❌]. If you have a 4-way setup, you will need to replace one of the 3-way switches instead and follow the 3-way installation instructions.
Step 5: Remove Existing Switch
Disconnect the LINE and LOAD wires (usually black) from the existing light switch. Disconnect the GROUND wire (usually bare copper or green). Remove wire nuts from the white NEUTRAL wires. The diagram illustrates which wires to disconnect.
Step 6: Prepare Wemo Smart Light Switch and Wires
Grab the cover plate from the top and pull down to snap it off the Wemo Smart Light Switch. Loosen the black and red screws on the Wemo Smart Light Switch with a screwdriver [?].
Step 7: Connect Wires
Choose your preferred option for connecting wires:
- Option A: Insert into holes: Insert the wire end into the holes near the screw terminal. Use a screwdriver [?] to tighten the screws, which will clamp down on the wire.
- Option B: Hook around screw: Use pliers [?️] to bend the wire end clockwise into a hook shape and wrap it around the screw terminal. Use a screwdriver [?] to tighten the screws.
If needed, use pliers to strip the wire end to approximately 9/32" (23mm).
Connection Steps:
- Connect the GROUND wire (usually bare copper or green) from the wall to the green screw on the Wemo switch.
- Connect the LINE and LOAD wires from the wall (usually black) to the black and red screws on the light switch using your chosen method (A or B). Either wire can be connected to either screw.
- Connect the provided jumper wire from the silver screw on the light switch to the NEUTRAL wires in the wall using a wire nut [?].
The diagram shows the correct wire connections to the Wemo switch terminals.
Step 8: Install Wemo Smart Light Switch into the wall
Tug each wire to ensure they are securely connected. Carefully tuck the wires behind the switch and into the electrical box. Screw the light switch into the wall. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws. The diagram shows the switch being installed and wires being tucked away.
Pro Tip: Make sure to insulate any exposed wiring with electrical tape [?].
Step 9: Turn On the Power
Turn power back on to your switch at your fuse panel or circuit breaker panel. Press the switch to put it in setup mode. The light on the switch will blink blue [?] when it is ready.
Step 10: Add to the Apple Home app
Unlock your iPhone [?]. Hold the upper back of your phone near the center of the switch. Adjust your phone's angle until setup prompts appear. Follow the prompts to configure the device. If prompts don't appear, add a new accessory in the Apple Home app and manually enter the 8-digit HomeKit Setup Code found on the switch or in step 10 of this guide.
Enjoy Your Wemo Smart Light Switch!
Control from Apple Home
Use the Home app to turn your Wemo on and off, share control, and organize your smart devices into groups and rooms.
Use Voice with Siri
Name your Wemo device and then ask Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or HomePod to turn your Wemo on or off.
Create Schedules and Scenes
Set your switch to automatically turn on or off at a particular time of day or when you leave or arrive home.
Thread for Quicker and More Reliable Control
Thread is a new wireless technology built into Wemo that connects smart home devices more quickly and reliably than Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. To use Thread, you'll need a smart home device acting as a border router, such as an Apple HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (2nd gen or later). If you don't have a border router, your Wemo will connect using Bluetooth.
Restart and Restore
Restart
If you're having setup or control issues, press and hold the reset button for 2 seconds until the light blinks white [⚪], then release.
Restore
If a restart doesn't help, try restoring to factory settings. Press and hold the reset button for 6 seconds until the light blinks red [?], then release.
What Does the Light Tell Me?
- Blinking White [⚪]: Wemo is not set up. Press the button to enter setup mode.
- Blinking Blue [?]: Setup mode - ready for app setup.
- Solid Blue (30 sec): Successfully connected.
- Fast Blinking Green (6x): Wemo was identified by the Home app.
- Fast Blinking Red (approx. 4x/sec): Your Wemo is overheating. It has turned itself off to cool down.
Wiring Diagrams
Single-pole wiring
This diagram illustrates the wiring for a single-pole setup. It shows the Wemo Smart Light Switch connected to the Load (light ?), with Ground/Terre, Line/Ligne, and Neutral/Neutre wires coming from the wall.
3-way wiring
This diagram shows a 3-way setup, where two switches control one light. It depicts a Wemo Smart Light Switch and a Standard 3-way Light Switch connected via 'Travelers/Navettes'. Connections for Ground/Terre, Line/Ligne, and Neutral/Neutre are shown.
