FOREWORD

BEHRINGER's founder, Uli Behringer, shares his vision and passion behind the XENYX series of mixing consoles. He emphasizes the commitment to sound quality, reliability, and ease of use, aiming to push the boundaries of technical feasibility. The design, circuit diagrams, PCB development, and mechanical concepts are his own work, with careful component selection to maximize performance. The goal was to create mixing consoles that empower users' creativity, offering incredible performance, intuitive operability, flexible routing, and a wealth of functions. Innovative technologies like the XENYX Mic Preamps and "British" EQs ensure optimum sound quality and reliability, even under extreme loads. BEHRINGER's focus on the end-user is evident in the passion and attention to detail invested in these products.

Thank you for choosing a XENYX mixing console.

1. INTRODUCTION

Congratulations on purchasing the BEHRINGER XENYX 1002FX/1202FX mixing console. This compact mixer offers incredible versatility and audio performance.

The BEHRINGER XENYX mixing console features premium microphone preamplifiers with optional phantom power, balanced line inputs, and the ability to connect external effects processors. Its extensive and well-thought-out routing possibilities make it suitable for both live and studio use.

The XENYX Series represents a significant advancement in mixing console technology. With state-of-the-art circuitry, these consoles deliver a warm analog sound, complemented by the latest digital technology for a blend of analog and digital advantages. Key features include:

CAUTION! Extreme volumes may damage your hearing and/or your headphones or loudspeakers. Turn the MAIN MIX control and PHONES control fully counterclockwise before switching on the unit. Always set appropriate volume levels.

1.1 General mixing console functions

A mixing console performs three main functions:

BEHRINGER mixing consoles feature an optimized interface to easily track the signal path.

1.2 The user's manual

This manual provides an overview of controls and detailed usage information, organized by function. For further details, visit www.behringer.com. Additional information and terminology explanations are available on product pages and in the glossary section of the website.

The block diagram included with the console illustrates connections and controls. Tracing the signal path, for example from the microphone input to the FX SEND connector, will help you quickly familiarize yourself with the console's capabilities.

1.3 Before you get started

1.3.1 Shipment

Your mixing console was carefully packed for safe transport. Inspect the packaging and contents for any damage incurred during transit. If damaged, notify your dealer and the shipping company immediately. For optimal protection during use or transport, a carrying case is recommended. Always use original packaging for storage or shipping. Keep unsupervised children away from the unit and its packaging. Dispose of packaging materials in an environmentally friendly manner.

1.3.2 Initial operation

Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating. Do not place the console on high-temperature equipment. Connect the power supply unit to the console first, then connect the power supply unit to the mains. Ensure all units have a proper ground connection; never disable the ground conductor. The unit must always be connected to a mains socket outlet with a protective earthing connection. Ensure the appliance coupler or power cord is easily accessible for disconnecting the unit from the mains.

1.3.3 Online registration

Register your new BEHRINGER equipment at www.behringer.com (or www.behringer.de) and read the warranty terms. Registering helps process repair claims more quickly. Contact your retailer or a BEHRINGER subsidiary for warranty service. Distributor information is available on the website.

2. CONTROL ELEMENTS AND CONNECTORS

This chapter details the control elements, switches, and connectors of your mixing console.

2.1 Mono channels

Each mono input channel features:

2.2 Stereo channels

Each stereo channel features:

2.3 Connector array of the main section

2.4 Main section

2.5 Digital effects processor

The XENYX 1002FX/1202FX includes a built-in digital stereo effects processor with 100 presets (Hall, Chorus, Flanger, Delay, etc.). Use the FX control to send signals to the processor. The integrated module simplifies setup and eliminates wiring issues.

3. APPLICATIONS

3.1 Recording studio

Even with computer-based studios, a mixing console is essential for managing audio inputs and outputs. The XENYX consoles offer benefits for microphone preamplification, EQ, routing, and level control.

Wiring:

Connect sound sources to microphone/line inputs. Connect master recorders (DAT/minidisk) to main outputs. Connect monitor speakers to control room outputs and headphones to the headphone output. Connect CD/tape outputs to the sound card inputs of your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Connect sound card outputs to the CD/tape inputs.

Recording and playback:

Input signals are pre-amplified, EQ'ed, and routed to the main bus. Use the LEVEL control for recording signal level and the MAIN MIX fader for the computer output level. For monitoring during recording, use the phones or control room bus to monitor the sound card returns (connected to CD/tape inputs) by pressing the CD/TAPE TO CTRL switch. This allows for overdubs. Use the direct monitoring function of your DAW. Do not press the CD/TAPE TO MIX switch in this application to avoid routing the playback signal back to the computer and causing feedback.

3.2 Live sound

The illustration shows a typical live setup. Vocal microphones and line outputs from guitar/bass amplifiers connect to mono channels. Keyboards and drum computers connect to stereo channels. The power amplifier for the sound system connects to the main outputs, with processors (compressors, equalizers, crossovers) in between. For live recordings, connect recording equipment (e.g., minidisk recorder) to the CD/tape outputs. A CD player for intermissions connects via the CD/tape inputs. If using a recorder/player combo, do not press the CD/TAPE TO MIX switch during recording to prevent feedback. If using an external effects processor, turn the FX SEND control in channel 11/12 fully counterclockwise to avoid feedback.

4. INSTALLATION

4.1 Mains connection

Connect the supplied AC adapter to the 3-pin mains connector on the rear of the console and then to the mains. Use only the provided power supply unit. Never connect the console to the power supply unit while the latter is connected to the mains. Both the power supply unit and the console will heat up during operation, which is normal.

4.2 Audio connections

Use high-grade cables for audio connections. Commercial RCA cables are used for CD/tape inputs and outputs. Unbalanced equipment can be connected to balanced inputs/outputs using mono plugs or stereo plugs with bridged ring and sleeve (XLR pins 1 and 3 bridged). Caution: Never use unbalanced XLR connectors (PIN 1 and 3 connected) on MIC input connectors when using phantom power.

XLR Connections: Pin 1: ground/shield, Pin 2: hot (+ve), Pin 3: cold (-ve). For unbalanced use, pins 1 and 3 must be bridged.

Unbalanced 1/4" TS connector: Tip: signal, Sleeve: ground/shield.

Balanced 1/4" TRS connector: Tip: hot (+ve), Ring: cold (-ve), Sleeve: ground/shield. For connection of balanced and unbalanced plugs, ring and sleeve must be bridged at the stereo plug.

1/4" TRS headphones connector: Tip: left signal, Ring: right signal, Sleeve: ground/shield.
