JBL BAR 500MK2 Soundbar System

Important Safety Instructions

Before using the soundbar, check the mains voltage. The JBL BAR 500MK2 is designed for use with a 100-240 volt AC, 50/60 Hz power supply. Connecting to other voltages may damage the product and create safety and fire hazards. If you have any doubts about the required voltage for your soundbar model or the mains voltage in your region, consult your dealer or technical support before plugging in the soundbar.

Never use extension cords

To avoid safety risks, use only the power cord supplied with the product. The use of extension cords is not recommended. As with any electrical equipment, never run power cords under carpets or rugs, or place heavy objects on them. Damaged power cords must be replaced immediately by authorized technical support, and the new cord must meet factory specifications.

Handle power cords with care

When unplugging the power cord from the outlet, hold the plug and never pull the cord. If you plan to not use the soundbar for an extended period, unplug it.

Never open the cabinet

The product contains no user-serviceable internal components. Opening the cabinet may create electric shock hazards, and the warranty will be voided if the product is modified. If water enters the product, disconnect it from the mains power and immediately seek authorized technical support.

Notes:

  • When HDMI and optical cables are connected for TV audio input, the HDMI connection takes priority.
  • Compatibility with all HDMI-CEC devices is not guaranteed.
  • HDMI cables for digital audio output and optical cables are sold separately.

5.1.1 TV (HDMI eARC)

Recommended for the best Dolby Atmos experience.

  1. Connect the soundbar to your TV using the supplied HDMI cable to the HDMI IN (eARC) connector. Ensure your TV’s HDMI-CEC and HDMI eARC functions are enabled. Refer to your TV’s manual for details.
  2. Connect your TV to a digital device (e.g., streaming device, set-top box, DVD/Blu-ray player, game console) using an HDMI cable (V2.0 or later). Ensure the digital device’s HDMI-CEC output is enabled. Consult the device’s manual for instructions. For the best Dolby Atmos experience, select "Bitstream" or "Raw data" in your TV and digital device’s audio settings.

Notes:

  • To play audio from a digital device connected to your TV, select the TV source (refer to "7.2 Playback via TV Source").
  • With Virtual Dolby Atmos, the soundbar’s Dolby surround mixer can expand legacy channel-based audio from Dolby Digital formats, including 5.1 and 7.1 content, to provide an immersive 3D Atmos experience.

5.1.2 TV (HDMI ARC)

Use the supplied HDMI cable to connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI IN (ARC) connector. Ensure your TV’s HDMI-CEC and HDMI ARC functions are enabled. For the best Dolby Atmos experience, select "Bitstream" or "Raw data" in the digital device’s audio settings.

Notes:

  • To play audio from a digital device connected to the soundbar, select the HDMI IN source (refer to "7.3 Playback from HDMI IN Source").
  • If your TV is not HDMI eARC compatible, connect the digital device to the soundbar’s HDMI/HDMI IN connector instead of the TV’s. Otherwise, Dolby Atmos information will not reach the soundbar’s HDMI (ARC) connectors.

11. Troubleshooting

Never attempt to repair this product yourself. If you encounter any problems while using the product, check the following points before calling technical support.

System

  • Unit does not turn on: Check if the power cord is plugged into the outlet and the soundbar.
  • Soundbar does not respond when buttons are pressed: Restore the soundbar to factory settings (refer to "8.2 Factory Reset").

Sound

  • Soundbar produces no sound: Check if the sound is muted. Select the correct audio input on the remote control. Connect the soundbar to a TV or other signal source correctly. Restore the soundbar to factory settings (refer to "8.2 Factory Reset").
  • Sound is distorted or has echoes: If using a TV as the soundbar’s signal source, check if the TV is muted or its speakers are turned off.
  • Audio and video are out of sync: Enable the audio synchronization function to synchronize audio and video (refer to "8.1 Sound Settings (Audio Synchronization)").
  • Dolby Atmos does not produce height effects: If your TV is only HDMI ARC compatible, ensure your digital device is connected to the soundbar via the HDMI/HDMI IN connector (refer to "5.1.2 TV (HDMI ARC)"). Enjoy Dolby Atmos sound effects when watching movies with TV/HDMI audio signals. Dolby Atmos is not compatible with audio streaming via Bluetooth or streaming apps (with Google Cast or AirPlay enabled).

Bluetooth

  • Device cannot connect to soundbar: Check if the device supports Bluetooth. If the soundbar was previously paired with another Bluetooth device, restart Bluetooth (refer to "5.2.3 Connecting with Another Bluetooth Device"). If your Bluetooth device has been paired with the soundbar before, restart Bluetooth on the soundbar, unpair the soundbar on the Bluetooth device, and then pair the Bluetooth device with the soundbar again (refer to "5.2.3 Connecting with Another Bluetooth Device").
  • Bluetooth device produces low-quality sound: Poor Bluetooth reception. Move the signal source closer to the soundbar and remove any obstacles between the signal source and the soundbar.
  • Bluetooth device connects and disconnects repeatedly: Poor Bluetooth reception. Move the signal source closer to the soundbar and remove any obstacles between the signal source and the soundbar.

Wi-Fi

  • Failed to connect to Wi-Fi: Check if Wi-Fi is turned on. Verify that the correct network is selected and the password is correct. Check if the router or modem is powered on and within range. Check router settings for WPA2 or auto security options. Ensure the soundbar is connected to the same wireless network as your smartphone or tablet. If you have trouble configuring Wi-Fi, press and hold the [Volume Up] and [Volume Down] buttons on the soundbar until "SETUP WIFI" is displayed.

Playback

  • AirPlay could not find the soundbar as an AirPlay speaker for music streaming: On your Apple device, update the software to the latest version: iOS 13.4 and later, macOS 10.15.4 and later, or tvOS 14.3. Ensure your Apple device is connected to the same network as the soundbar. For a PC running iTunes for Windows, you can stream music from your PC to the soundbar via Bluetooth.
  • Music playback does not work correctly when the sound source switches from Bluetooth to Google Cast or AirPlay: The quality of transmission and sound depends on the capacity and coverage of the network used to connect the soundbar to signal sources like phones, tablets, and computers.
  • Music playback will not resume when the sound source switches from Bluetooth to TV / HDMI IN and then back to Bluetooth: Bluetooth signal playback will be interrupted when the sound source changes from Bluetooth to TV / HDMI IN. Upon returning to the Bluetooth source, restart playback on the Bluetooth device.

Remote Control

  • Remote control does not work: Check if the batteries are depleted. If so, replace them with new batteries. Move the remote control closer to the soundbar and point it in the correct direction.
  • TV remote control learning failed: Check if the TV remote control works via infrared. IR learning is not supported by a Bluetooth TV remote control.
