Weight Capacities: Quickie QXi - 265 lbs (120 kg).

B. Intended Use

The QXi wheelchair is intended to provide mobility to persons limited to a sitting position.

[Warning] Do not use this device for purposes other than intended. It is not designed for weight training, and standing on the frame is unsafe. Never allow someone to stand on your chair or use it as a step ladder. This chair is for a single rider only. Unauthorized modifications will void the warranty and may cause safety hazards.

C. Attendants and Caregivers

[Warning] Before assisting a rider, read all warnings and instructions. Consult a healthcare advisor for safe body mechanics for transfers and support.

D. Accessories

[Warning] Unauthorized modifications or use of parts/accessories not supplied or approved by Sunrise Medical may change the chair structure, void the warranty, and cause safety hazards. This can lead to incorrect wheels/tires, altered structural integrity, or unsafe situations.

When going over obstacles, lean upper body forward when going up and backward when going down. Keep hands on handrims. Never push or pull on objects for propulsion. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

D. Front Caster Lift

[Warning] Front caster lift can occur unintentionally. Pitch control should never be attempted without consulting a healthcare advisor and ensuring anti-tips are installed. Failure to heed this warning risks damage, falls, tip-overs, or loss of control.

E. Reaching or Leaning

[Warning] Reaching or leaning affects the chair's balance. Never reach if shifting weight or leaning forward/sideways. Keep buttocks in contact with the backrest. Avoid reaching with both hands. Do not lean to the rear unless anti-tip tubes are locked. Do not lean over the seat back. If reaching is necessary: do not lock rear wheels, do not put pressure on footrests, move chair close to the object, reach to the side, rotate casters forward, and grasp a rear wheel or armrest for stability. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

F. Moving Backward

[Warning] Move backward with extra care, as the chair is most stable moving forward. A rear wheel hitting an object can cause loss of control or tip-over. Propel slowly and smoothly. Lock anti-tip tubes. Stop often to check path. Failure to heed this warning risks falls or tip-overs.

G. Escalators

[Warning] Never use this chair on an escalator, even with an attendant. This is highly likely to cause a fall or tip-over, risking severe injury.

H. Ramps, Slopes & Sidehills

[Warning] Avoid slopes, ramps, and sidehills as they change the center of balance, making the chair less stable. Do not use grades steeper than 10%. Always go straight up/down. Do not turn on slopes. Stay centered on ramps. Do not stop on steep slopes. Never use rear wheel locks to slow down. Be aware of wet surfaces, grade changes, and drop-offs. To reduce risk: lean uphill, keep pressure on handrims for speed control on down slopes, and ask for help. Ramps at home/work must have smooth transitions and no drop-offs. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

I. Transfers

[Warning] Transfers are dangerous due to the point where the seat is not below you. Work with a healthcare advisor for safe methods. Have someone help until you learn. Lock rear wheels. Be aware the chair can slide/tip. Ensure pneumatic tires are properly inflated. Move chair close to the transfer destination. Use a transfer board if possible. Rotate front casters forward. Remove or swing footrests out of the way. Ensure feet do not catch. Avoid putting weight on footrests. Remove or swing armrests out of the way. Transfer as far back onto the seat as possible. Before transferring: remove armrests, remove/move footrests, set wheel lock.

J. Curbs & Single Steps

[Warning] Always ask for assistance before riding over curbs or steps. These can cause tipping and injury. Do not climb high curbs/steps without help. Go straight up/down. Impact from dropping can damage the chair. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

K. Climbing a Curb or Single Step

[Attendant Instructions] To climb a curb/step backward: Stay behind the chair. Continue backward until rear wheels contact the curb. Lift and roll rear wheels over. Pull chair back until casters clear the edge. Return to rolling position.

L. Descending a Curb or Single Step

[Attendant Instructions] To descend a curb/step forward: Stay at the rear. Tip chair slightly and pull backward. At balance point, step forward until rear wheels reach the edge. Slowly roll down. Push forward to the lower level. Tilt back to balance point once on lower level.

M. Stairs

[Warning] Never use stairs without help. This risks falls or tip-overs. Negotiating stairs requires at least two attendants.

N. Climbing Stairs

[Attendant Instructions] Use at least two attendants. Move chair backward up stairs. Person at rear controls by tilting. Second attendant grasps front frame and lifts chair one step at a time. Repeat for each stair.

O. Descending Stairs

[Attendant Instructions] Use at least two attendants. Move chair forward down stairs. Person at rear tilts chair to balance point and rolls to edge. Second attendant on third step grasps frame and lowers chair one step at a time. Repeat for each stair.

Warnings: Components & Options

A. Anti-Tip Tubes

[Warning] Anti-tip tubes help prevent backward tipping. When locked, they should be 1.5 to 2 inches off the ground. If set higher, they may not prevent tip-overs. If set lower, they may snag on obstacles. They may need to be rotated up for climbing curbs or obstacles. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

B. Armrests

[Warning] Armrests detach and will not bear weight. Never lift the chair by its armrests. Lift only by non-detachable parts of the main frame. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

C. Cushions & Sling Seats

[Warning] Quickie sling seats and standard foam cushions are not designed for pressure relief. Consult a doctor/therapist if at risk for pressure sores. Seat slings are not direct seating surfaces; use a cushion. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

D. Fasteners

[Warning] Use only specified high-strength fasteners. Improper fasteners can cause chair failure. Use only authorized supplier parts. Over/under-tightened fasteners can fail. Tighten loose bolts/screws promptly. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

E. Footrests

[Warning] Footrests should be at least 2 inches off the ground to avoid snagging. Ensure feet do not catch when transferring. Avoid putting weight on footrests, which can cause tipping. Swing footrests out of the way or remove for transfers. Never lift the chair by footrests. Do not use footrests to open doors. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

F. Pneumatic Tires

[Warning] Proper tire inflation is crucial for performance and safety. Do not use under- or over-inflated tires. Check weekly. Low pressure can cause wheel locks to slip or the chair to veer. Over-inflated tires may burst. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

J. Rear Wheels

[Warning] Rear wheel setup affects the center of balance. Moving axles forward increases the risk of tipping backward. Consult your healthcare advisor for the best axle setup. Adjust rear wheel locks after any axle changes. Ensure lock arms embed in tires at least 1/8 inch when locked. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

K. Rear Wheel Locks

[Warning] Rear wheel locks are for stopping, not slowing. Use them only when the chair is stopped. Never use them to slow down. Always set both locks when transferring. Low tire pressure can cause locks to slip. Ensure lock arms embed in tires at least 1/8 inch. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

L. Modified Seat Systems

[Warning] Seat systems not approved by Sunrise may alter the center of balance, causing tip-overs. Consult your supplier before changing seat systems. Unauthorized systems may affect folding. They are prohibited for transit use. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.

M. Seat and Back Upholstery

[Warning] Replace worn or torn fabric promptly. Sling fabric weakens with age and use. Inspect for fraying, thin spots, or stretching. "Dropping down" into the chair weakens fabric. Laundering or moisture reduces flame retardation. Loosen straps on tension-adjustable upholstery before folding. Failure to heed these warnings risks falls or tip-overs.
