Operation
Overview of the Control Valve
ATTENTION: To avoid damage to the device or possible injury, always disconnect the pump with the sand filter before changing the function of the control valve. Changing the control valve positions while the pump is in use can cause injury to persons or damage to the product.
How to Use the Control Valve
Push down the control valve handle and rotate to the desired function.
Control Valve Functions
The control valve is used to select the 6 different filter functions: Filtering, Closed, Backwash, Rinse, Drain, and Circulate.
Diagrams illustrating the six functions of the control valve: Filtering, Closed, Backwash, Rinse, Drain, and Circulate, with arrows indicating water flow.
Notes on Operation and Maintenance
- Ensure that all wastewater disposal methods comply with local, regional, or state regulations. Do not discharge water in places where it may cause flooding or damage.
- When the control valve is set to backwash, rinse, or drain positions, water is discharged from port D on the valve.
- Do not connect or operate the sand filter when the control valve is set to the closed position, otherwise the pump will be irreparably damaged.
- Never set the control valve between two functions, as this may cause leaks.
- To prevent water leaks, insert the plug into port D of the control valve before operating the sand filter.
Air Release
Press down the control valve knob and wait for water to flow from port D to release air.
NOTE: It is important to repeat this operation every time the pump is started after the winter season, after maintenance, and after backwashing the sand bed.
First-Time Use Instructions
Perform backwashing and rinsing to prepare the pump for first use, then rinse the sand.
ATTENTION: THE SAND FILTER MUST NOT OPERATE DRY
- Press down the control valve handle and turn to the backwash function.
- Apply and operate the sand filter for 3-5 minutes or until the water runs clear.
- Turn off the sand filter and set the control valve to the rinse position.
- Turn on the sand filter and operate for 1 minute so that water circulates backward through the sand filter and is discharged from port D.
- Turn off the sand filter. Set the control valve to the closed position.
- Add water if necessary.
IMPORTANT: This procedure removes water from the pool and will require a water change. If the water level is close to the pool's inlet and outlet valves, immediately turn off the sand filter.
- Now the sand filter is ready for use. Set the control valve to the filtering function.
NOTE: To avoid the risk of electric shock, dry yourself thoroughly and remove excess water from the sand filter.
- To operate the sand filter, turn it on.
NOTE: At this point, the sand filter begins its filtering cycle. Check that water returns to the pool and note the filter pressure indicated on the pressure gauge. Generally, the recommended sand filter pressure is less than 0.25 Bar (3.5 PSI) during operation.
Sand Filter Maintenance
ATTENTION: To avoid the risk of serious or fatal injury, ensure the sand filter is turned off and disconnected before performing maintenance operations.
As dirt accumulates in the sand filter, the pressure gauge reading will increase. When the pressure gauge shows a reading equal to or greater than 0.25 Bar (3.5 PSI), or if the water flow to the pool is too weak, the sand needs cleaning. To clean the sand bed, follow the instructions previously described under: Backwash and Rinse.
Diagrams of pressure gauges showing normal and high pressure readings.
NOTE: The pressure gauge is for maintenance purposes only, and the indicated value is for reference only; the pressure gauge should not be used as a precision instrument.
NOTE: It is recommended to clean the sand bed once a month or less frequently, depending on pool usage. Do not clean the sand too frequently.
Filter Cleaning
- Disconnect the sand filter and set the control valve to the closed function.
- Replace the debris screens with stop plugs to prevent water from escaping.
- Unscrew the filter lid to remove it.
- Remove and clean the filter.
- Reposition the filter, ensuring the holes are aligned.
- Check that the O-ring is in place. Screw the filter lid back on.
- Remove the stop plugs and insert the debris screens.
- NOTE: The filter should be emptied and cleaned regularly. A dirty or blocked filter significantly reduces the performance of the sand filter.
Pool Water Reduction or Drainage
- Turn off the sand filter and set the control valve to the drain position.
- Disconnect the hose from port A of the pool and port A of the sand filter, and connect it to port D.
- NOTE: Remember to replace the debris screens with stop plugs to prevent water from escaping.
- Turn on the sand filter and operate it to remove pool water.
- ATTENTION: THE SAND FILTER MUST NOT OPERATE DRY.
Storage
In areas with freezing winter temperatures, the pool equipment must be prepared for winter to protect it from damage. Freezing water can damage the sand filter and void the warranty.
- Backwash the sand bed.
- Drain the pool according to the instructions in its manual.
- Disconnect the two hoses from the pool and the sand filter.
- Remove all sand from the tank and dry all components.
- Store the sand filter in a dry place out of the reach of children.
