Filling with Pool-Classified Sand.Flowclear™ Polysphere

NOTE: Use only special pool sand that is free of all limestone and clay. A bag of 8.5 kg silica sand, No. 20 grit, 0.45-0.85mm is sufficient. If you do not use the recommended filter sand size, the filter function will be reduced, the sand filter may be damaged, and the warranty will be void.

NOTE: Avoid damaging the skimmer when adding sand by pouring some water into the lower tank to cover the skimmer and collector hub.

NOTE: Sand/Flowclear™ Polysphere is not included.

NOTE: Use 28g Flowclear™ Polysphere to replace 1 kg of sand.

Operation

Regulator Valve Overview

WARNING: Avoid damage to the equipment and risk of personal injury by always turning off the sand filter before changing the regulator valve function. Changing valve positions while the pump is running can damage the regulator valve, which can lead to injury to persons and equipment.

How to use the regulator valve: Press the regulator valve handle down and turn it to the desired function.

Diagram: Shows the regulator valve handle and its rotation mechanism.

Regulator Valve Functions

The regulator valve is used to select 6 different filter functions: Filter, Closed, Backwash, Rinse, Drain, and Circulate.

  • Filter: This function is used to filter the pool water and should be used 99% of the time. Water is pumped through the sand filter, where it is cleaned and returned to the pool.

Diagram: Water flows into the top of the filter (A), down through the sand (C), and out through the bottom (B), returning to the pool.

  • Closed: This function stops the water flow between the sand filter and the pool.

Diagram: No water flow is indicated.

  • Backwash: This function is used to clean the sand bed. Water is pumped through the collector hub upwards through the sand bed and exits via port D.

Diagram: Water enters at B, goes up through the sand (C), exits at D. Port A is closed.

  • Rinse: This function is for initial startup, cleaning, and distribution of the sand bed after backwashing. Water is pumped downwards through the sand bed, up through the collector hub, and exits via valve port D.

Diagram: Water enters at A, goes down through the sand (C), up through the collector hub, and exits at D. Port B is closed.

  • Drain: With this function, water is drained from the pool. It's an alternative setting to bypass the filter, where water is pumped out of port D instead of returning it to the pool.

Diagram: Water enters at A, bypasses the sand (C), and exits at D. Ports B are closed.

  • Circulate: This function circulates the pool water by bypassing the sand filter. This function is used if the filter is defective, to collect debris in the debris screens.

Diagram: Water enters at A, bypasses the sand (C), and exits at D. Port B is closed.

NOTE:

  • Ensure that all wastewater disposal steps comply with applicable local, state, and national codes. Do not discharge water where it will cause flooding damage.
  • When the regulator valve is set to the backwash, rinse, or drain positions, water will exit from port D on the regulator valve.
  • Do not turn on or operate the sand filter with the regulator valve set to closed, as this will cause serious damage to the sand filter.
  • During operation, do not set the sand filter between two functions, as this will cause leaks.
  • Prevent leaks from dripping water by screwing the cap onto port D of the regulator valve before operating the sand filter.

Air Bleeding

Press the control valve handle and wait until water exits from Port D before bleeding the air.

NOTE: It is important to repeat this procedure every time the pump is started after winter storage, maintenance, or sand backwashing.

First-Time Use Instructions

Backwashing and rinsing must be performed the first time to prepare the pump for initial use and to wash the sand.

CAUTION: DO NOT RUN THE SAND FILTER WITHOUT WATER.

  1. Press the regulator valve handle down and turn it to the backwash function.
  2. Start the sand filter and let it run for 3-5 minutes, or until the discharged water is clear.
  3. Turn off the sand filter and set the regulator valve to the rinse function.
  4. Turn on the sand filter and let it run for 1 minute. This circulates water backwards through the sand filter and drains water out of connection D.
  5. Turn off the sand filter. Set the regulator valve to the closed function.
  6. Refill the pool with water as needed.

IMPORTANT: This procedure draws water from the pool, which you may need to refill. Immediately turn off the sand filter if the water level approaches the pool's inlet and outlet valves.

The sand filter is now ready for use. Set the regulator valve to the filter function.

NOTE: Avoid the risk of electric shock by wiping excess water from yourself and the sand filter.

Turn on the sand filter to run it.

NOTE: The sand filter has now begun its filtration cycle. Check that water is returning to the pool and note the filter pressure on the manometer. Generally, the recommended sand filter pressure is less than 0.25 Bar (3.5 PSI) when running.

Diagram: A manometer showing pressure readings, with a recommended operating range highlighted.

Sand Filter Maintenance

CAUTION: Ensure the filter pump is turned off and unplugged before performing any maintenance, as there is a risk of personal injury or death. As dirt accumulates in the sand filter, the pressure reading on the manometer will rise. When the manometer reads 0.25 Bar (3.5 PSI) or higher, or if water flows too slowly into the pool, it is time to clean the sand. Follow all previous instructions for Backwashing and Rinsing when cleaning the sand.

NOTE: The manometer is for cleaning use only, and the pressure readings are for reference only. It should not be used as a precision instrument.

NOTE: It is recommended to clean the sand once a month or less frequently depending on how often the pool is used. Do not clean the sand too often.

Cleaning the Strainer

  1. Turn off the sand filter and set the regulator valve to closed.
  2. Replace the dirt strainers with blanking plugs to prevent water from leaking out.
  3. Remove the side cover by unscrewing it.
  4. Remove the strainer and clear any dirt.
  5. Replace the strainer. Ensure the hole in the strainer is correctly positioned.
  6. Check that the gasket is in place. Secure the back of the side cover.
  7. Remove the blanking plugs and insert the dirt strainers.

NOTE: The strainer must be emptied and cleaned at regular intervals. A dirty or clogged strainer will impair the sand filter's performance.

Diagram: Shows the strainer and blanking plugs.

Lowering Water Level or Draining Pool Water

  1. Turn off the sand filter and set the regulator valve to drain.
  2. Remove the hose from the pool's port A and connect it to port D.
  3. NOTE: Remember to replace the dirt strainer with the blanking plug to prevent water from leaking out.
  4. Turn on the sand filter to run the filter and drain the pool water.

WARNING: DO NOT RUN THE SAND FILTER WITHOUT WATER.

Winter Storage

In areas with frost in winter, the pool's equipment must be prepared for winter storage to protect it from damage. If water in the sand filter freezes, it will be damaged, and the warranty will be void.

  1. Backwash the sand filter.
  2. Drain the pool according to the pool's manual.
  3. Remove the two hoses from the pool and the sand filter.
  4. Empty all sand from the tank and dry all components.
  5. Store the sand filter in a dry place out of reach of children.
