Setting up your Fitbit One
To maximize your Fitbit One experience, use the free Fitbit app available for iOS®, Android™, and Windows® 10 mobile devices. If a compatible mobile device is unavailable, you can use a computer and fitbit.com.
Setting up your tracker on your mobile device
The Fitbit app supports over 200 mobile devices running iOS, Android, and Windows 10 operating systems.
To get started:
- Verify Fitbit app compatibility with your mobile device at http://www.fitbit.com/devices.
- Locate the Fitbit app in your device's app store:
- Apple App Store for iOS devices (e.g., iPhone®, iPad®).
- Google Play™ Store for Android devices (e.g., Samsung® Galaxy® S5, Motorola Droid Turbo).
- Microsoft® Windows Store for Windows 10 mobile devices (e.g., Lumia™ phone, Surface™ tablet).
- Install the app. An account with the respective app store is required for downloads, even for free apps.
- Open the installed app and tap 'Join Fitbit'. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a Fitbit account and pair your One. Pairing enables communication (data syncing) between the tracker and your mobile device.
Note: Personal information collected during setup is used to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) for estimating calorie expenditure. This data is private unless you choose to share it via your Privacy settings.
After setup, you are ready to begin tracking.
Setting up your tracker on your PC (Windows 10 only)
If you do not have a mobile device, you can set up and sync your tracker using the Fitbit app on your Windows 10 PC. Download the app from the Windows Store (search for 'Fitbit app'). You may need to create a Microsoft account if you haven't downloaded apps before.
Follow the app's instructions to create a Fitbit account and set up your One. Wireless setup is possible if your computer has Bluetooth; otherwise, use the included wireless sync dongle.
Setting up your tracker on your PC (Windows 8.1 and below)
For users without a compatible mobile device, setup can be done via a computer, with stats accessible on fitbit.com. This requires installing the free Fitbit Connect application to sync data with your fitbit.com dashboard.
To install Fitbit Connect and set up your tracker:
- Visit http://www.fitbit.com/setup.
- Scroll down and select the download option.
- Save the file when prompted.
- Run the installer (FitbitConnect_Win.exe).
- Click 'Continue' to proceed.
- Select 'Set up a New Fitbit Device'.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to create an account and connect your One. Bluetooth enables wireless setup; otherwise, connect the wireless sync dongle.
Note: Personal information collected during setup is used to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) for estimating calorie expenditure. This data is private unless you choose to share it via your Privacy settings.

Syncing your tracker data to your Fitbit account
Regularly syncing your Fitbit One ensures your data is transferred to Fitbit, allowing you to track progress, view exercise history, earn badges, analyze sleep logs, and more on your Fitbit dashboard. Daily syncing is recommended but not mandatory.
Fitbit apps utilize Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for syncing. The app syncs when opened if the tracker is nearby, and periodically throughout the day if 'all-day sync' is enabled. For Windows 10 PCs without Bluetooth, ensure the tracker is connected to the computer.
Fitbit Connect on Mac also uses Bluetooth for syncing (if available); otherwise, the wireless sync dongle must be plugged in. Fitbit Connect on PC requires the wireless sync dongle. You can initiate a sync manually, or it occurs automatically every 15 minutes if:
- Your tracker is within 20 feet of your computer and has new data to upload.
- The computer is powered on, awake, and connected to the Internet.
Getting to know your Fitbit One
This section covers how to wear and recharge your tracker.
Placement
For optimal accuracy, wear the One on or very close to your torso. A clip is provided to secure the tracker to your clothing. A sleep wristband is also included.
To prevent loss, it is recommended to wear the tracker in your pocket, clipped to your pocket, or clipped to your bra.
Placement Illustrations: 1. Tracker clipped to a pocket. 2. Tracker clipped to a waistband using a silicone holder, display facing outward. 3. Tracker clipped to a bra using a silicone holder, display facing outward.
The One is not designed for direct skin contact. Always use the silicone holder when clipping to a bra or waistband, with the display facing outward. Do not wear the One inside your bra.
Some users may experience skin irritation. If this occurs, clip the tracker to your pocket, belt, or other external clothing.
The One is sweat-proof and rainproof but not waterproof; do not wear it while swimming.
Changing the display for left-handed use
The tracker display defaults to a right-handed orientation. To switch to left-handed, log in to your fitbit.com dashboard, click the gear icon (⚙️) in the upper right, navigate to Settings > Devices, and adjust the 'Left-handed' setting.
Battery life and charging
The One features a rechargeable built-in battery, offering up to two weeks of battery life on a full charge.
Determining your current battery level
Battery level can be checked in two ways:
- While charging, press the tracker's button to view the on-screen battery indicator.
- Check your fitbit.com dashboard.
Charging your tracker
To charge, align the gold contacts on the tracker with those inside the charging cable, then plug the cable into a computer's USB port. Charging takes approximately one hour.
Note: Your tracker resets daily at midnight, resetting goal progress and daily data to zero. This does not delete stored data, which uploads during the next sync. The reset time is based on your fitbit.com profile's time zone.
Tracking with Fitbit One
Your One automatically tracks various stats while worn. Data is uploaded to your Fitbit dashboard upon syncing.
Viewing all-day stats
Press the button on your One to view the time and cycle through all-day stats:
- Steps taken
- Floors climbed
- Recent activity levels (represented by an expanding flower icon)
- Distance traveled
- Calories burned
Display Stat Examples: The Fitbit One display shows various activity stats: Steps: 23, Floors Climbed: 3382, Activity Level: represented by an expanding flower icon, Distance: 3.85, Calories Burned: 9.90, Time: 3:07 PM, Battery/Sync Status: 1383.
Note: Your tracker resets at midnight according to your account's time zone. This ensures accurate daily totals without deleting previous data. All data appears on your dashboard after syncing.
Using the display
Initially, pressing the button scrolls through stat categories (e.g., STEPS) followed by the stat and its icon. After cycling through five times, the category names disappear for quicker scrolling.
Upon reset (e.g., after shutdown, upgrade, or full battery drain), the tracker enters 'beginner mode', showing stat categories for the first five cycles.
Tracking sleep
The One tracks sleep duration and quality by monitoring movement throughout the night.
- Place the tracker into the slot in your wristband and wrap it around your non-dominant wrist.
- When ready to sleep, press and hold the tracker's button for 2+ seconds. A blinking stopwatch and clock, along with other blinking icons, indicate sleep mode.
- Upon waking, press and hold the button for 2+ seconds to stop sleep recording. Icons will stop blinking, signifying exit from sleep mode. Daily totals will resume display.
Synced data will show sleep duration and wake-up times on your dashboard. You can also set sleep goals on the dashboard.
Note: If you forget to press the button, you can manually enter sleep times in your online sleep log.
Tracking exercise
Your One can track specific exercises or workouts, similar to a car's trip odometer, providing detailed stats for a set period.
For example, during a run, you can view stats like calories burned and steps taken. Ending activity mode and syncing data allows you to view a summary of pace, duration, and more on your fitbit.com dashboard.
To start recording, hold the tracker's button for 2-3 seconds until a flashing stopwatch and numbers appear. During activity, display icons blink. Pressing the button cycles through stats recorded since the activity began.
To exit activity mode, hold the tracker's button for 2-3 seconds until icons and numbers stop flashing.
Using the fitbit.com dashboard
Fitbit's online dashboard helps you track, manage, and evaluate fitness progress, view daily totals, analyze activities, see historical graphs, and log food.
