Introduction
The American Standard Gold 824 is an easy-to-use, programmable smart control featuring a color touch-screen. When connected to Nexia™ Home Intelligence, it allows control of your home's heating and cooling system, along with up to 230 Z-Wave devices, from a smartphone, PC, or tablet anywhere in the world.
This guide provides instructions for configuring and connecting your Gold 824 Smart Control quickly and easily.
Getting Started: Refer to "Start Here!" on page 3 to begin using your new Gold 824.

Thank you for choosing the American Standard Gold 824 Smart Control. Its intuitive interface and powerful features represent the latest in climate control technology. This guide will introduce you to its many features.
Nexia™ Home Intelligence: Connecting to a Nexia™ Home Intelligence account unlocks the full potential of your Gold 824. Nexia is a cloud-based platform that enables smart products in your home to work together via a single application. The Gold 824 can act as the central hub for your home automation network.
Nexia™ Home Intelligence Capabilities:
- ? Monitor and control your HVAC system remotely via internet-enabled devices.
- ? Build a network of up to 230 Z-Wave enabled products.
- ☁️ View weather information, including outdoor temperature, five-day forecasts, radar, and alerts.
- ✉️ Receive text and email notifications for home events.
- ⬆️ Receive automatic software updates.

Start Here! - User Setup Wizard
The User Setup Wizard guides you through the Gold 824's configurable settings.
Requirements for Setup and Nexia™ Connection:
- ? High-speed internet connection (wired or wireless).
- Your wireless (WiFi) network name and password.
- An internet browser.
- A valid email address.
Accessing the User Setup Wizard: Navigate via the device interface: MENU ➔ SETTINGS ➔ USER SETUP WIZARD. Once activated, the wizard cannot be cancelled and will guide you through the setup steps.
Setup Steps:
- Screen Settings: Adjust brightness, backlight, screen saver, and color themes.
- Schedule Settings: Enable or disable the scheduling feature. If disabled, 1-Touch Presets are available.
- Guided Scheduling (if enabled): Automatically creates schedules based on user input.
- 1-Touch Presets (if disabled): Configure Home, Away, and Sleep temperatures, selectable from the Home Screen.
- Network Setup: Select your wireless network and enter the password. For hidden networks, select "Hidden Network" and enter the SSID. (Wired connection bypasses this step).
Nexia™ Home Intelligence Registration: Requires an internet connection. Your Gold 824 is equipped for remote access. For enrollment assistance, visit www.nexiahome.com/as.
Weather Registration: Requires Nexia registration. Enter your Zip Code for local weather information, including forecasts and alerts.

Navigating the Control - Home Screen
The Home Screen displays key information and provides access to various functions.

- Date and Time: Displayed at the top.
- Notifications and System Alerts: Shown near the time.
- Weather Forecast: Access 5-Day Forecast, Radar, and Alerts by pressing the relevant area.
- Network Status: Indicates network connectivity.
- Energy Savings Mode / 1-Touch Settings: Activate Energy Savings Mode or define Away presets.
- Heating and Cooling Set Points: View and adjust target temperatures.
- System Status Display: Shows current system operational status.
- Indoor Humidity Target: Set the desired humidity level.
- ☰ Menu: Access additional screens and settings.
- System Mode, Fan Mode, Air Cleaner: Buttons to change these operational modes.
Note: A plus symbol (+) indicates that both the compressor and auxiliary heat are called simultaneously.
Temperature Control Panel Screen
This panel allows manual adjustment of target temperatures.
Accessing the Panel: Press the INDOOR TEMPERATURE area on the Home Screen.
Adjusting Temperatures: Use the UP ⬆️ and DOWN ⬇️ arrows to change the target temperature. Press the INDOOR TEMPERATURE area again to confirm and hide the panel.
Scheduling Enabled: New target temperatures are held until the next scheduled period. The "Hold Until" time is displayed. To make a hold permanent, press "HOLD PERM" ?.
Scheduling Disabled: New target temperatures are permanent until manually changed or a 1-Touch Preset is activated.
Viewing Schedule: When Scheduling is enabled, press "SHOW SCHEDULE" to view and edit the current schedule.

Menu Screen
The Menu screen provides access to all major functions:
- ⚙️ Settings: Access all user settings.
- ? Schedules: View/edit schedules or 1-Touch Presets. Enable/disable scheduling via MENU ➔ SETTINGS ➔ SCHEDULES.
- ☀️ Weather: View 5-Day Forecast, Radar, and Weather Alerts (requires Nexia registration).
- ? Screen Lock: Access Screen Lock and Guest Access settings. Hold the Menu button for 5 seconds to unlock.
- ? Clean Screen: Disables the touch screen for 30 seconds for cleaning with a soft, damp cloth.
- ℹ️ System Info: View system information, notifications, and alarms.
- ? Service: Display dealer contact information.
- ? Nexia: Use Z-Wave bridge/repeater functions (see Nexia™ Home Intelligence section).
- ? Smart Optimization: Enable or disable Smart Optimization.
Settings Screen
The Settings screen allows configuration of various parameters:
- ?️ Thermostat: Set temperature scale, deadband, calibration, and outdoor sensor source.
- ? Schedules: Enable or disable scheduling.
- ⭐ 1-Touch Presets: Configure presets (only "Away" available when scheduling is enabled).
- ?️ Display: Adjust screen brightness, backlight timer, screensaver, and color theme.
- ⏰ Date & Time: Manually set the date, time, and time zone.
- ? Network: View network information.
- ⬆️ SW Upgrades: Manually upgrade software via www.AmericanStandardAir.com.
- ? Reminders: Set system maintenance and service reminders.
- ? Restore: Restore all settings to factory defaults.
- ? User Setup Wizard: Initiate the setup wizard.
*Note: Allow at least 1 hour for the control to acclimate to ambient room conditions. Temperature display may be inaccurate during acclimation.
Scheduling
The Gold 824 allows for user-programmable temperature schedules. Each day can have a unique schedule with up to six periods.
Accessing Schedules: Navigate to MENU ➔ SCHEDULES or select "SHOW SCHEDULES" from the Temperature Control Panel.

Changing Period Times: Press the time to adjust start or stop times. Periods must be at least 30 minutes long.
Changing Period Set Points: Press the red (heating) or blue (cooling) area of a period to adjust its temperature setpoint using the UP/DOWN arrows.
Changing Period Name: Press the period name (e.g., "Wake") to rename it, either by selecting a predefined name or entering a new one.
Adding Periods: Press "ADD PERIOD", then select a green circle to insert a new period. Name it and set its time and temperature. Up to six periods per day are allowed. Press APPLY to save.
Deleting Periods: From the Schedule Screen, press "DELETE PERIOD". Press the trash can icon (?️) next to a period to mark it for deletion. Press APPLY to save.
Overriding Schedules
These functions require Scheduling to be enabled.
Hold Until: Override a schedule until a specific date and time.
- Access the Temperature Control Panel.
- Adjust Cooling or Heating Set Points using UP ⬆️ / DOWN ⬇️ arrows.
- Press the STATUS AREA to set the duration (day and time) for the hold to cancel.
- Return to the Home Screen. "Holding Until" will be displayed.
Hold Permanently: Override a schedule indefinitely until manually cancelled.
- Access the Temperature Control Panel.
- Adjust Cooling or Heating Set Points.
- Press "HOLD PERM" ?. "Hold Perm" will be displayed.
- Return to the Home Screen. "Hold Permanently" will be displayed.
Cancelling an Override: Access the Temperature Control Panel, then press "HOLD UNTIL" or "HOLD PERM" to cancel the override. "Following Schedule" will reappear.
Configuring 1-Touch Presets
1-Touch Presets provide predefined Heating and Cooling Set Points for Home, Away, and Sleep periods. This feature requires Scheduling to be disabled.
Configuration Steps:
- From the MENU, select 1-TOUCH PRESETS, then press AWAY.
- Adjust the Cooling Set Point (blue) and Heating Set Point (red) using the UP ⬆️ / DOWN ⬇️ arrows.
- Repeat for Home and Sleep settings.
- Press APPLY, then HOME to return to the Home Screen.
Note: When Scheduling is enabled, only the "Away" preset is available for energy savings.

Nexia™ Home Intelligence
The Gold 824, when connected to Nexia™, acts as a Z-Wave security-enabled device and can serve as a central hub for home automation. It can display local weather conditions and alerts.
A basic Nexia™ Home Intelligence account subscription is included with the Gold 824 at no additional charge. Additional devices may incur extra charges.

Supported Devices: Up to 230 separate Z-Wave devices can be connected.
Including/Excluding Z-Wave Devices
The Gold 824 integrates seamlessly with Nexia™ as part of a Z-Wave home automation system. If no Z-Wave bridge exists, the Gold 824 configures itself as one. If a bridge is present, the Gold 824 acts as a Z-Wave repeater, improving communication quality.
Including Z-Wave Devices:
- From the HOME ➔ MENU screen, press NEXIA ?.
- Press INCLUDE DEVICE and follow the device manufacturer's instructions to put the Z-Wave device into include mode (within 4 minutes).
Excluding Z-Wave Devices:
- From the HOME ➔ MENU screen, press NEXIA ?.
- Press EXCLUDE DEVICE and follow the manufacturer's instructions to put the Z-Wave device into exclude mode (within 4 minutes).
Advanced Z-Wave Functions: Press ADVANCED for functions like unregistering your bridge.

Z-Wave Repeater Screen
When functioning as a Z-Wave repeater, this screen allows you to exclude the Gold 824 from the network or unregister it from your account.
Exclude from a Network: Used in conjunction with the exclude button on a standalone Z-Wave bridge. From HOME ➔ MENU ➔ NEXIA, press EXCLUDE FROM NETWORK. Then, press EXCLUDE on the bridge to complete.
Unregister: Press UNREGISTER from HOME ➔ MENU ➔ NEXIA to disconnect the Gold 824 from your account and remove it from the Z-Wave network.

Security Settings
Access Security Settings via MENU ➔ SCREEN LOCK ?.
Screen Lock Off: The control and all settings are accessible.
Screen Lock On: After 1 minute of inactivity, the control and settings are locked. To temporarily access settings, press and hold HOME ➔ MENU for five seconds.
Guest Access: When Screen Lock is ON, Guest Access allows target temperature changes of up to ±5° and access to weather. All other settings remain locked. Activate by pressing ON and APPLY.

Other Features
Automatic Software Upgrades: Occur automatically when connected to Nexia™ Home Intelligence.
Manual Software Upgrades: Requires a computer with internet, a USB flash drive, and the included USB connector. Visit www.AmericanStandardAir.com, navigate to Products ➔ Thermostat Controls, select Gold 824, and click "Get Software Updates".
Smart Optimization: This feature customizes the control to your environment through blower and active call tests, improving temperature accuracy and system performance. It is enabled by default and runs approximately 18 hours after initial power-up, taking about 90 minutes. During this process, heating and cooling are disabled.
- Delay Smart Optimization: Touch and hold the screen for five seconds.
- Disable Smart Optimization: Navigate to Home ➔ Smart Optimization, select Disable, and press Apply.
- Enable Smart Optimization: Navigate to Home ➔ Smart Optimization, select Enable, and press Apply. It will execute in approximately 18 hours.
- Manually Trigger: Disable, then re-enable the feature.
