iRobot Roomba 650 Side Brush Motor Replacement
Introduction
This component drives the side brush. When the motor is damaged, replacement is necessary for the side brush to function correctly. The side brush motor is housed underneath the bottom panel, inside a gearbox.
Tools
- Phillips #0 Screwdriver
- Flathead 3/32" or 2.5 mm Screwdriver
Step 1 — Removing the Side Brush
With the Roomba upside down and turned off, use the Phillips #0 screwdriver to remove the 3.5 mm screw from the center of the side-brush. After removing the screw, set it aside and pull the side brush out.
Step 2 — Bottom Panel Removal
Unscrew the four screws holding the bottom panel using the Phillips #0 screwdriver. Note that these screws are captive and designed to loosen but not detach completely, preventing loss and ingestion during cleaning. Once all screws are sufficiently loosened, lift the bottom panel up and off the Roomba.
Step 3 — Side Brush Motor
Locate and loosen the two small screws fastened to the motor housing using the Phillips #0 Screwdriver. Similar to the bottom panel screws, these will not come out completely.
Step 4 — Gear Box Cover
Remove the screw located on top of the gear box housing. The small plastic piece should detach easily. To open the gear box, carefully insert a flathead screwdriver into the slot on the end of the box. This step may require some wiggling of the screwdriver. The cover should then come off.
Step 5 — Motor Removal
Locate and loosen the two screws inside the gearbox using the Phillips #0 Screwdriver. The motor should then come out from the bottom. To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
