DETECTO BODY FAT SCALE

BODY WATER, BMI (BODY MASS INDEX) WITH DAILY CALORIE REQUIREMENT

MODEL #D410

USER MANUAL

Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of a precision health monitoring product designed for years of accurate use. Please read the following set-up and use instructions carefully to ensure optimal performance.

Instruction Manual

The DETECTO body fat scale is manufactured in facilities certified to ISO 9001 Quality, ISO 14001 Environment, OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management Systems, and ISO 13485 Medical Devices Quality Management System. The scale utilizes Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to estimate body fat, total body water, bone mass, and muscle mass. It sends a harmless electrical current through the body to estimate these metrics based on impedance. An "Athlete Mode" is included for individuals with different body builds. The scale also suggests a daily calorie reference based on your body fat percentage.

Note: Read this manual carefully and keep it accessible for future reference.

Notes on Safety

Please read this section carefully to familiarize yourself with the features and operations before using the unit.

⚠️ The warning signs and icons shown are provided to ensure safe and correct product use, preventing damage, risk, and injury to yourself and others.

Icon Meanings:

  • PRECAUTION NOTICE: Indicates the right conditions for product use to prevent damage, risk, and injury.
  • IMPORTANT NOTICE TO USERS: Highlights important information users should read before using the product.
  • CARE AND MAINTENANCE: Details potential damage from incorrect handling or improper maintenance.

Intended Use

This scale is designed to measure body weight and impedance, estimating body fat percentage, total body water, and muscle mass using BIA. It is intended for use by healthy children aged 10-17 and healthy adults with active, moderately active, or inactive lifestyles for body composition assessment in a home environment.

Precaution Notices

  • Do not use the scale on individuals with body implants such as pacemakers, artificial limbs, contraceptive devices, or metal plates/screws, as this may cause malfunction or inaccurate results. Consult a physician if in doubt.
  • Do not disassemble the scale, as incorrect handling may cause injury.
  • This product is intended for adults and children aged 10 to 85.
  • Ensure you use only the specified battery type (refer to "Preparation Before Use").
  • Maintain a clear line of sight between the Infrared Transmitter (on the scale) and the Infrared Receiver (on the remote display unit).
  • The "Athlete" mode is applicable only for users aged 15 and above.
  • Body fat percentage estimates can vary with body water levels, influenced by dehydration or over-hydration due to factors like alcohol consumption, menstruation, illness, or intense exercise.
  • Do not use if pregnant, as results may be inaccurate and effects on the fetus are unknown.
  • Always use the scale with bare feet for body fat and body water estimates.

Problem Solving and Questions

  • No weight displayed? Check if the scale is powered on and started. Refer to "Preparation Before Use".
  • Display reads "Lo" or "bAtt"? Battery is low. Replace batteries in the scale unit for "Lo" and in the remote display unit for "bAtt".
  • Message "----" (Negative weight)? Step off the scale and wait for it to switch off automatically.
  • Message "Err 0" (Initialization error)? Step off the scale, wait for it to switch off, then restart by pressing the platform lightly. The display will show "0000" and return to clock mode.
  • Message "Err 1" (Instability error)? Step off the scale, wait for it to switch off, then step on again and stand still during computation.
  • Message "Err 2" (Overload)? Remove the weight immediately to prevent permanent damage.
  • Message "Err 3" (Measurement error)? Impedance cannot be measured. Ensure you are standing still with maximum contact between your feet and the metal contacts. Moistening your feet may improve electrical contact. Total body water percentage may be out of range; moistening feet can help.
  • Errors persist after corrective actions? Remove and reinsert the battery after 1 minute.
  • Problem still not solved? Contact your sales representative.

Care and Maintenance

  1. Do not disassemble the scale, except for battery replacement. It contains no user-serviceable parts, and damage may result from improper handling.
  2. Remove the battery if the scale will not be used for a prolonged period.
  3. Clean the scale after use with a dampened cloth. Do not use solvents or immerse the unit in water.
  4. Avoid excessive impact or vibration, such as dropping the scale onto the floor.

Education Information

Understanding Weight and Body Composition

Absolute weight alone does not determine obesity. Weight change does not distinguish between fat and muscle loss. For effective weight management, maintaining muscle mass while reducing body fat is crucial. Monitoring body fat percentage is an important step towards successful weight management and health.

The optimal body fat percentage (%BF) varies by age and gender. The following tables provide a guide:

Standard for Men

RatingAge

How is percentage body fat (%BF) estimated?

Body fat percentage is measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). BIA technology, pioneered in the 1970s, was adapted for consumer bathroom scales in the last decade. A low-intensity electrical signal is sent through the body, causing no harm. The signal's flow difficulty, known as electrical impedance, varies with body fat content. A proprietary algorithm uses this impedance to estimate %BF. Note that %BF and %TBW do not sum to 100%.

The %BF estimated by the scale is a good approximation of your actual body fat. Clinical methods are available through your physician for more precise measurements.

Why is it important to monitor percentage Total Body Water (%TBW) in the body?

Water is a vital component of the body and a key health indicator, making up 50-70% of body weight. It is proportionally higher in lean tissue than fat tissue. Water facilitates biochemical reactions, transports waste products, maintains body temperature, provides moisture, cushions organs, lubricates joints, and is part of body fluids. Body water levels fluctuate with hydration and health status. Monitoring %TBW is a useful tool for health maintenance. Like %BF, %TBW estimation in this scale is based on BIA.

Estimated %TBW can vary with hydration levels (water intake, sweat). For accuracy, maintain consistent hydration before measurement. The scale's TBW estimation may be less accurate for individuals with diseases causing water retention.

The optimal %TBW varies by age and gender. The following table provides a guide:

Optimal %TBW and Average %SM Ranges by Age and Gender

%BF RangeOptimal % TBW RangeAverage %SM Range
MenWomenMenWomen
4 to 14%70 to 63%70 to 59%52 to 41%46 to 37%
15 to 21%63 to 58%59 to 52%46 to 38%38 to 33%

25 to 60%56 to 29%50 to 29%41% or below32% or below

The %TBW estimated by the scale is a good approximation. Clinical methods are available through your physician for more precise measurements.

When should I use the scale's body fat and total body water functions?

For maximum accuracy and repeatability, use the functions at approximately the same time daily (e.g., before breakfast). Avoid significant hydration level changes before measurement. Establishing your own baseline %BF and %TBW values and tracking changes is more beneficial than comparing to population norms.

Why is the Athlete Mode necessary in a Body Fat Analyzer?

BIA may overestimate body fat percentage in elite athletes due to physiological variations in bone density and hydration. The Athlete mode is selectable for adults aged 15 and older.

Definition of an Athlete

An athlete is generally considered a person who consistently trains a minimum of three times per week for two hours each time to improve specific skills for their sport or activity.

Calorie Predictor

The Calorie Predictor function estimates required calories based on body composition and user-entered data, serving as a guide for setting daily calorie goals during weight loss and exercise programs.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a ratio of a person's weight to height, commonly used to classify weight as "healthy" or "unhealthy".

BMI Classification (for adults 19-99 years of age)

BMIClassification
30 and overObese
25 – 29.9Overweight
18.5 – 24.9Normal
Under 18.5Underweight
