DOD FX96 Echo FX Analog Delay

User Manual

What the FX96 Does

The FX96 Echo Fx is DOD's latest addition to its arsenal of great delay effects. The FX96 is an Analog Delay pedal that offers tape delay simulation at your feet. No longer will you have to haul (and handle with care) the bulky Echo tape machines of the past to the gig. And if the "worn-out tape" characteristics of the old Echo machines is the sound your looking for, the FX 96 gives a Tape Quality control for changing the tonal quality of the tape emulation.

Connecting the FX96

Connect your guitar to the input of the FX96. Connect the OUTPUT of the FX96 to your amp (or to the input of another effects device). To eliminate the need for a 9-volt battery, attach the DOD PS200R to the AC adapter jack. The PS200R is a regulated supply that will not allow hum into the pedal.

Features

Controls

MIX (DRY/TAPE)
The MIX (DRY/TAPE) knob controls the mix level between the Dry and Effect level of the FX 96 Echo Fx. Turning the knob all of the way down, produces all dry signal. Turning it all of the way up, produces a 100% wet effect.
DELAY TIME
The DELAY TIME knob controls the delay time of the FX 96 Echo Fx. Turning the knob all of the way up produces up to approximately 800 milliseconds of delay time.
REGEN/REPEAT
The REGEN/REPEAT knob controls the amount of delay regeneration that is fed into the signal of the FX 96. By turning the knob all of the way up, this will produce more delay repeats. By turning down the REGEN/REPEAT control down, this will produce less repeats.
TAPE QUALITY
The TAPE QUALITY knob controls the Low Pass Filter which is used to re-create analog tape quality variances of the past. The higher the TAPE QUALITY knob is turned up, the more "grainy" and muddy the tape quality becomes.
FOOTSWITCH
Switches the Echo effect in or out of the signal path.
LED INDICATOR
Lights when the Echo is enabled, and is not lit when the Echo is bypassed.
JACKS
Input, Output, AC Adapter (use the DOD PS200R power supply only to eliminate the need for a 9 volt battery).

Operation of the FX96

The FX96 can be operated in front of an amplifier or in an effects loop. Since the order of the effects is very important, they should be ordered as follows: 1) compression effects (DOD FX84), 2) Wah/volume and envelope filters (DOD FX17, FX25), 3) Distortion effects or preamps (DOD FX102, FX69B), 4) EQ's (DOD FX40), 5) chorus, flanging, phasing, vibrato (DOD FX75C), 6) Delay and reverb effects (DOD DFX98, FX 96).

To set up your own sound with the FX96, set all controls at 12 o'clock. Then adjust the DELAY TIME and REGEN/REPEAT controls for the desired Delay time and Delay repeats. Next, adjust the MIX (DRY/TAPE) control for the desired amount of effect. Finally, dial in the quality of the Tape delay by adjusting the TAPE QUALITY knob control.

Sound Examples

On the following pages, some examples of different types of sounds are described, along with graphic representations of how to set the knobs. Since good (or bad) guitar sounds are a subjective matter, use these examples as starting points to create your own sounds that meet your specific tastes, or lack thereof.

Slap Back Delay

Use this setting when you require a good old-fashioned slap back delay. This is an ideal setting for country guitar. It gives a nice and short delay time (approximately 100 milliseconds), and enough repeat to make that Tele sing.

Grainy Tape Echo

If you are longing for the unique sounds of an analog tape machine, this setting is for you. Utilizing the tape quality control, can give you an accurate emulation the old grain quality sound of echo tape when it becomes good and worn. The Echo setting will provide you with just enough delay time to make the delay sound out like an old tape machine.

Long Delay

To add depth and dimension to your playing, try this set-up to provide big delay that layers your sound with a longer delay time and more repeats.
