DOD Rubberneck Analog Delay Pedal

Introduction

Thank you for choosing the DOD Rubberneck Analog Delay pedal. The Rubberneck is an extended-feature delay pedal that uses BBDs for classic analog delay up to 1.5 seconds. The Rubberneck functions as a standard delay pedal but also includes several performance features not found in other analog delay pedals. These include 'Rubbernecking,' a function that allows delay repeats to be stretched or compressed in time; repeats oscillation, a function that provides a secondary delay feedback setting to create momentary oscillation effects; and a Loop Send/Return jack for adding effects to the delay signal's feedback path. The FOOTSWITCH input jack allows for connecting a DigiTech FS3X footswitch for hands-free control of Rubbernecking, modulation on/off, and Tap Tempo/Regen. The Rubberneck Analog Delay pedal is everything you need to achieve that truly classic analog delay sound, with modern feature enhancements to transport your delay effects into the future.

Features

Quick Start

  1. Engage the effect with the EFFECT ON footswitch (the LED to the right of the footswitch illuminates solid green when the effect is active).
  2. Use the TIME, REPEATS, and LEVEL knobs to set the delay interval, number of repeats, and delay output level. Use the TAP RATIO switch to set the delay 'feel'.
  3. Use the RATE and DEPTH modulation knobs to subtly vary the delay time. This provides a slight chorus effect on the delay repeats.
  4. Use the GAIN knob to control the amount of distortion added to the delay signal. Use the TONE knob to alter the tone of the delay signal.
  5. Set the TAILS switch to the desired position:
    • On+NoDry – The dry signal is cut when the effect is engaged. Note that the signal will pass through a buffered signal path when the effect is bypassed, rather than being true bypass. Delay repeats will still sound after the effect is bypassed.
    • On – Delay repeats will continue to sound after the effect is bypassed. Note that the signal will pass through a buffered signal path when the effect is bypassed, rather than being true bypass.
    • Off – Delay repeats are cut immediately when the effect is bypassed. Use this setting if you want true bypass.
Use these additional features to take your delay effects to the next level:
    • Tap Tempo: Tap the TEMPO/REGEN footswitch to set the delay time hands-free. Each tap interval will change the delay (indicated by the LED to the left of the footswitch) to match the tapped intervals. Used in conjunction with the TAP RATIO switch, you can achieve triplet or double-time delays depending on the tap interval.
    • Rubbernecking: Press and hold the EFFECT ON footswitch to engage 'Rubbernecking,' a function where the delay time is stretched or compressed over time. This can create 'dive bomb' or 'chipmunk' type delay hits during a performance. Use the RUBBERNECK RATE control to set the attack/release of the delay stretch.
    • Repeats Oscillation: Press and hold the TEMPO/REGEN footswitch to momentarily engage the REGEN ADJUST control. This is essentially a secondary feedback control that replaces the REPEATS knob setting with the REGEN ADJUST potentiometer setting whenever the TEMPO/REGEN footswitch is pressed and held. By setting different REPEATS and REGEN ADJUST parameters, you can transition from single repeats to runaway oscillations and back by holding and releasing the TEMPO/REGEN footswitch.
    • Loop Send/Return: The Loop Send/Return jack allows you to insert other effects (e.g., distortion, ring modulator, phaser, flanger) into the delay signal's feedback path. This allows you to create wild delay effects that can dynamically change their sound with each repeat.

Connections and Setup

Connection Diagrams

A typical connection involves plugging your guitar into the INPUT jack. The OUTPUT jack connects to your amplifier's input. For using the effects loop, connect the SEND/RETURN jack's TIP (Send) to the input of an external effect and the RING (Return) from the output of that external effect. An optional DigiTech FS3X footswitch can be connected to the FOOTSWHITCH jack for remote control of functions like Rubbernecking, Modulation, and Tap Tempo/Regen. The unit requires a 9VDC power supply connected to the POWER jack.

NOTE: If your amp's effects loop has a mix control, set the mix to 100% wet.

Powering Up

  1. Turn down your amplifier's master volume.
  2. Make all connections to the Rubberneck as shown in the 'Connection Diagrams'.
  3. Connect the appropriate power supply (sold separately) to the POWER input jack and plug the other end into an available AC outlet.
  4. Strum your guitar and gradually increase your amplifier's master volume until the desired level is reached.

Using an External Footswitch

The FOOTSWICH input jack accommodates an optional DigiTech FS3X footswitch for remote control of Rubbernecking, Modulation on/off, and Tap Tempo/Regen functions. Other third-party momentary footswitches may also be used, but may not offer full functionality.

NOTE: For full functionality, connect the DigiTech FS3X footswitch using a TRS cable. A TS cable can be used to control Tap Tempo and Regen when using a third-party momentary footswitch (latching footswitches will not work). When using a third-party momentary footswitch with a TS cable, it must first be connected to the Rubberneck before powering on to allow the Rubberneck to detect it and function properly.
