Samsung HW-Q990F Simple User Guide
This guide provides essential information for setting up and using your Samsung HW-Q990F Wireless Soundbar. For the complete user guide, scan the QR code or visit the Samsung support website.
01 Checking the Components
Ensure all components are present:
- Soundbar
- Subwoofer
- Surround Speaker x 2
- Soundbar Remote Control / Battery
- Power Cable x 4
- Wall-mounting Guide
- Holder Screw x2
- Screw (M4 x L10) x 2
- Wall-mounting Bracket x 2
- Rubber-Foot x 4
Note: Additional components or optional cables can be purchased from a Samsung Service Center or Samsung Customer Care.
02 Product Overview
Top side:
- Volume Control
- (Multi) Button: Turns on the soundbar in standby mode or switches input sources.
- (Microphone) Button: Turns the microphone on or off. A red indicator signifies the microphone is off. Press and hold for 3 seconds to enter BT PAIRING mode.
Bottom side of soundbar:
- 1 DIGITAL AUDIO IN (OPTICAL): Connect to TV or external devices.
- 2 SERVICE: For firmware updates via USB.
- 3 HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC): Connect to your TV.
- 4 HDMI 1/HDMI 2: Connect to external devices for simultaneous video and audio transmission.
- 5 (POWER): Connect the power cable.
Rear side of subwoofer:
- LINK LED indicator: Solid blue indicates a successful connection to the soundbar and surround speakers. Blinking blue means it's searching for a connection.
Bottom side of the left and right surround speakers:
- Connect to power.
Note: Adjust surround speakers for optimal sound. Refer to the full User Guide for details.

An administration fee may be charged if an engineer visit is required due to user error (e.g., not reading the manual).

03 Connecting the Soundbar to Other Units
Ensure the soundbar, subwoofer, and surround speakers are properly connected. The LINK LED indicator on the subwoofer should turn solid blue.
04 Connecting to the SmartThings App
- Install App: Download the SmartThings app from your device's app store or scan the QR code.
- Register Device: Run the app and follow the on-screen instructions to register the soundbar. You can also scan the QR code on the soundbar itself.
- Control Soundbar: Open the SmartThings app, select the registered soundbar, and adjust settings like Volume, Sound Mode, and Advanced Sound Settings. Other users can share control via the app's menu.
05 Connecting to TV
5-1 Connecting to a TV with Cables
Connecting an HDMI Cable:
- Connect the soundbar's HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC) port to the TV's HDMI IN (ARC) port using an HDMI cable.
- Using HDMI cables certified by HDMI.org is recommended.
Connecting an Optical Cable:
- Connect the TV's OPTICAL OUT port to the soundbar's DIGITAL AUDIO IN (OPTICAL) port.
- Ensure the protective cover is removed from the optical cable before use.
Note: If there is no sound, press the (Multi) button on the soundbar or the (Source) button on the remote to select the correct input mode.
5-2 Connecting to a TV through Wi-Fi
This feature is available only on Samsung TVs (2017 or later).
- Ensure the soundbar and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- On your Samsung TV, navigate to Sound settings and select 'Soundbar (Wi-Fi)' as the sound output. Refer to your TV's manual for specific menu paths.
06 Using the Q-Symphony Feature
When the soundbar is connected to a compatible Samsung TV, Q-Symphony allows sound to play from both the soundbar and TV simultaneously for a richer audio experience. The TV will display 'Q-Symphony' when connected. Access settings via the TV's Sound Output menu.
07 Connecting to Bluetooth
- Press the connection button on the remote control or press and hold the (Microphone) button on the soundbar for 3 seconds or longer to enter BT PAIRING mode.
- On your TV or mobile device, search for Bluetooth devices and select the soundbar.
- If prompted for a PIN, enter '0000'.
Note: You can also pair via the SmartThings app.
08 Using the Soundbar Remote Control
The remote control allows you to manage volume, input sources, sound modes, and settings. Key buttons include:
- (POWER): Turns the soundbar on/off.
- (Input source): Selects connected devices.
- (Bluetooth): Activates Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Directional buttons: Navigate menus.
- (Play/Pause): Controls playback.
- (Mute): Mutes/unmutes sound.
- (Sound Mode): Selects sound modes.
- (Info): Displays codec information or status.
- Volume (+/-): Adjusts overall volume.
- WOOFER (+/-): Adjusts subwoofer (bass) levels.
- CH LEVEL: Adjusts individual speaker volume levels.
- (Sound Settings): Customizes audio settings like treble and bass.
09 Installing the Soundbar
Installing the soundbar on top of the TV stand
Place the soundbar on a flat, stable surface. Align the soundbar with the TV's center and ensure the microphone is not blocked for proper voice recognition.
Installing the soundbar on a wall
- Mount only on a vertical wall capable of supporting the soundbar's weight.
- Use appropriate screws or anchor brackets for your wall type (e.g., gypsum board, steel, wood).
- Turn off power and unplug the soundbar before mounting.
- Connect all cables before mounting.
- Refer to the diagrams for specific mounting instructions, including screw types and alignment.
Note: For wall-mounting surround speakers (certain models), the wall must support at least 8 kg. Use appropriate screws (e.g., 1/4 - 20 UNC screw).
Samsung does not provide wall mounts.
10 Troubleshooting
- No Power: Ensure the power cord is securely connected.
- Subwoofer/Surround Speakers Not Connecting: Press and hold 'ID SET' on the rear of these units for 5 seconds. Then, press and hold the UP button on the soundbar remote for 5 seconds. The LINK LED should turn solid blue.
- Function Issues: Unplug and replug the power cord. Try unplugging and replugging external devices.
- Remote Control Not Working: Ensure it's within range and has fresh batteries.
- Indicator Light Red: The microphone is off.
- No Sound: Check volume levels, ensure the soundbar is not muted, and verify the TV's sound output is set to the soundbar. Reconnect the power cord.
- No Sound from Subwoofer/Surround Speakers: Check the LED indicator; if red or blinking blue, reconnect the units.
- TV Not Connecting via HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC): Ensure the HDMI cable is secure in the ARC/eARC port. Try connecting only the soundbar to the TV. Enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) in the TV's settings.
- Bluetooth Connection Issues: Ensure the soundbar is in BT PAIRING mode. Remove the soundbar from the device's Bluetooth list and reconnect.
- Audio Stuttering (Bluetooth): Move the device closer to the soundbar. Avoid placing the soundbar near devices causing radio interference (microwaves, routers). Ensure your body isn't blocking the Bluetooth transceiver.
- Wi-Fi Connection Issues: Restart your wireless router. Move the router closer to the soundbar or to an unobstructed location if the signal is weak.
- Soundbar Not Turning On with TV: Ensure the TV is powered off first if the Auto Power Link feature is used.
- TV Not Showing UHD Input Signal: Adjust TV or source device settings. Ensure you are using an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable certified by HDMI.org.

Wiring the Main Power Supply Plug (UK Only):
The mains lead has a fuse. Replace with a BS1362 approved fuse of the same rating. Never use the plug with the fuse cover removed. If the plug is unsuitable or the cable is too short, obtain a suitable extension lead or consult your dealer. If cutting off the plug, remove the fuse and dispose of it safely. Never insert bare wires into a mains socket.
Wire Colours: BLUE = NEUTRAL, BROWN = LIVE. Connect to the corresponding terminals (N/BLUE/BLACK for Neutral, L/BROWN/RED for Live). Do NOT connect to the EARTH terminal (E/Green/Green and Yellow).
Precautions:
- Ensure your house AC power supply matches product requirements.
- Install horizontally on a suitable base with adequate ventilation (7-10 cm). Do not cover ventilation slots.
- Do not place on equipment that generates heat.
- Unplug during thunderstorms or if leaving unused for extended periods.
- Protect from moisture, heat, and strong magnetic/electric fields.
- Condensation may occur if stored in cold temperatures; allow unit to reach room temperature before use.
- Batteries contain harmful chemicals; dispose of responsibly and do not expose to heat or fire. Danger of explosion if battery is replaced incorrectly; use same or equivalent type.

Samsung products are warranted for twelve (12) months from the original purchase date against defective materials and workmanship.
