Model 515 Video/Audio Switching System

Installation and Operation Instructions

Description and Application

The Model 515 is a high-performance switching system designed for video components. It offers an economical and convenient method to switch between up to five video sources, each with line-level composite video and stereo audio outputs. Compatible products include TV tuners, video disc players, satellite receivers, and VCRs. The selected video/audio signal is outputted by the 515 without alteration from its passive circuitry, ensuring no crosstalk or video bleed-through from unselected components.

The 515 can also switch the Radio Frequency (RF) output of video components, typically on channel 3 or 4, for use with televisions that lack direct video and audio inputs. Note that a single 515 unit cannot switch both RF and line-level signals simultaneously.

Designed for ease of placement, the 515's compact size allows it to sit on a shelf (freestanding), be fastened to a surface (cabinet-mounted), or be flush-mounted via the front panel. A Model 515V variant is available for applications requiring a vertical front panel orientation.

Feature Summary

Installation

Choose a convenient location for the 515, considering the placement of the video components it will connect to and the necessary cable routing paths.

The 515 can be placed on any flat surface, such as a shelf or on top of another component. For more permanent installations, the 515 can be secured using one of two mounting methods.

Cabinet Mounting

The Model 515 features a metal cabinet with "keyhole style" slots, enabling it to be secured to most flat surfaces using two #6 x 3/4" flat head screws. Follow these steps:

Panel Mounting

The Model 515 can also be flush-mounted, concealing its cabinet and connecting cables behind a fixture. For this method, use the provided template to identify a suitable location and the required cutout for the 515's cabinet. The template indicates a rectangular cutout of 1-7/8 inches (48mm) by 7-1/8 inches (180mm).

Connections

All connections for the Model 515 are located on the rear panel and utilize standard RCA audio/video patch cords. For custom cables, use high-quality video/audio transmission cable and connectors.

Line-Level Connections

Radio Frequency (RF) Connections

When switching RF outputs from video components, connect them to the rear panel jacks marked VIDEO 1-5. Connect the 515's VIDEO OUTPUT jack to the VHF antenna input of a television set or video tuner. Use 75-ohm coaxial cable (RG-59 or equivalent) with good quality RCA plugs or adapters for the connection to the 515.

Important: Do not attempt to route both line-level video/audio and RF signals through the same 515 unit.

Operation

The 515 is designed for extreme simplicity of use. Its entirely passive circuitry means there is no On/Off switch. Pressing a front panel push-button selects the desired product for playback. Selecting a new product automatically disconnects the previously selected one.

Testing

After completing all connections, test the 515's operation by selecting each of the five video product sources individually. If connections are made correctly, selecting a source component should yield video and audio performance comparable to a direct connection. The 515 is engineered to route the selected video source with minimal loss, distortion, or signal degradation.

Troubleshooting

Most issues encountered with the 515 can be attributed to the cables connecting it to the video products. If problems arise, first inspect for defective patch cables or incorrect connections. For instance, if no picture is displayed for any selected video product, check the connection between the 515's VIDEO OUTPUT and the destination video product's inputs. If an issue appears specific to only one of the five source products, verify the connections between that product and the 515.
