About the Battery Pack
CAUTION

- Do not leave batteries in a car exposed to direct sunlight for long periods with doors and windows closed.
About the AC Adaptor (Supplied)
CAUTION!
To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or product damage:
- Do not install or place this unit in a bookcase, built-in cabinet, or other confined space. Ensure this unit is well ventilated.
The unit is in standby when the AC adaptor is connected. The primary circuit is always “live” as long as the AC adaptor is connected to an electrical outlet.
Cautions for Use
- Use only the supplied USB connection cable or a genuine Panasonic USB connection cable (DMW-USBC1: optional).
- Always use a genuine Panasonic HDMI micro cable (RP-CHEU15: optional, 1.5 m).
- Always use a genuine Panasonic AV cable (DMW-AVC1: optional).
Keep this unit as far away as possible from electromagnetic equipment (such as microwave ovens, TVs, video games etc.).
- Using near a TV may disrupt pictures/sound due to electromagnetic wave radiation.
- Using near cell phones may cause noise affecting pictures/sound.
- Recorded data may be damaged or pictures distorted by strong magnetic fields from speakers or large motors.
- Electromagnetic wave radiation from microprocessors may adversely affect this unit.
- If affected by electromagnetic equipment and stops functioning, turn off the unit, remove battery or disconnect AC adaptor, then reinsert/reconnect.
Do not use this unit near radio transmitters or high-voltage lines.
- Recording near such sources may adversely affect pictures/sound.

Before Use
Camera Handling
- Keep the camera away from excessive vibration, force, or pressure.
- The camera is not dust, splash, or waterproof. Avoid use in dusty, sandy, or wet environments.
Condensation (When the lens or the LCD monitor is fogged up)
- Condensation may occur with sudden temperature/humidity changes, potentially causing dirt, mold, or damage.
- If condensation occurs, turn off the camera and wait about two hours for it to adjust to the surrounding temperature; fogging will clear naturally.
About the Compass
Information measured with this unit is a rough estimate. Do not use for professional applications. When using for mountain climbing, trekking, or underwater, always bring a map and a dedicated measuring instrument in addition to using the camera's direction as an estimate.

- SD Memory Card, SDHC Memory Card, and SDXC Memory Card are referred to as 'card'. Cards are optional; pictures can be recorded/played back on built-in memory without a card.

Names and Functions of Main Parts
This section describes the various parts and controls of the DMC-TZ40 digital camera.
- Top View: Mode dial, Flash, Self-timer indicator/AF Assist Lamp, Lens, NFC antenna, Lens barrel, Microphones, Speaker, Zoom lever, Motion picture button, Camera [ON/OFF] button, Shutter button.
- Bottom View: Tripod mount (use screws shorter than 5.5 mm to avoid damage), Card/Battery door, Release lever, DC coupler cover.
- Rear View (LCD Monitor Side): [EXPOSURE] button, [MAP] button, LCD monitor, [Wi-Fi] button, Playback button, Cursor buttons, [MENU/SET] button, Charging lamp/Wi-Fi connection lamp, [Q.MENU]/[Trash/Return] (Delete/Cancel) button, [DISP.] button.
- Side View (Ports): [HDMI] socket (MicroHDMI TypeD), [AV OUT/DIGITAL] socket (also used for battery charging).
Always use genuine Panasonic AC adaptors (DMW-AC5G: optional) and DC couplers (DMW-DCC14: optional) when using an AC adaptor.
It is recommended to use the supplied hand strap to prevent dropping the camera.
Touch Operations
This camera's touch screen senses pressure.
- Touch: Press the screen and pull the finger back. Used to select icons or pictures.
- Drag: Touch and slide your finger across the screen. Used to scroll pictures or change the range of displayed pictures.
- Pinch (spread/pinch): On the touch panel, spread two fingers to zoom in, and pinch two fingers to zoom out. Used for zooming in/out of playback pictures. You can also zoom by quickly touching the screen twice.
LCD Monitor Care:
- If using protective sheets, observe their precautions. Some may impair screen appearance/operation.
- If using a protective sheet or if the screen is not very responsive, touch with a little more pressure.
- If your hand is pressed against the touch screen, it will not work properly.
- Do not press the LCD monitor with hard pointed tips (e.g., ballpoint pens) or fingernails.
- Clean the LCD monitor with a soft, dry cloth if there are fingerprints or dirt.
Inserting and Removing the Battery or SD Memory Card (Optional)
Ensure the camera is turned off before proceeding.
- Slide the release lever (A) to the [OPEN] position and open the card/battery door.
- Insert the battery and card:
Battery: Insert firmly until locked by lever (B).
Card: Insert firmly until it clicks. Do not touch the terminals on the back of the card. - Close the door: Slide the release lever to the [LOCK] position.
To Remove:
- To remove battery: Move the lever in the direction of the arrow.
- To remove card: Push the card until it clicks, then pull it out.
Always use genuine Panasonic batteries (DMW-BCM13E). Using other batteries may affect product quality. Keep the Memory Card out of reach of children to prevent swallowing. Panasonic cards are recommended.
Charging the Battery
- The compatible battery is DMW-BCM13E.
- The battery is not charged when shipped; charge before use.
- Charge the battery with the supplied AC adaptor indoors (10 °C to 30 °C).
Make sure the camera is turned off.
- Insert the battery into the unit, then connect the unit to the AC adaptor (A) (supplied) or a PC (B). The AC adaptor connects to an electrical outlet (C) via a USB connection cable (D).
Charging Lamp (E)
- On: Charging in progress (approx. 210 min. if fully depleted).
- Off: Charging stops.
When using the supplied AC adaptor:
- Do not use any other USB connection cables except the supplied one or a genuine Panasonic USB connection cable (DMW-USBC1: optional).
- Do not use any other AC adaptors except the supplied one.
- Do not use the supplied AC adaptor or USB connection cable with other devices.
Setting the Clock
The clock is not set when the camera is shipped. Disconnect the unit from the AC adaptor (supplied).
- Press the Camera [ON/OFF] button (A).
- Press [MENU/SET] (B).
- Press the left/right cursor buttons to select items (year, month, day, hour, minute, display order, or time display format), and press the up/down cursor buttons to set.
- Press [MENU/SET] to set. To cancel, press the [Trash/Return] button.
- Confirm the setting and press [MENU/SET]. To return to the previous screen, press the [Trash/Return] button.
- Press the left/right cursor buttons to select [Yes] and press [MENU/SET] if automatically correcting time of day using the GPS function. To manually set date and time, select [No]. When automatic time adjustment via GPS is selected, [GPS Setting] is set to [ON].
Changing Time Settings
If [Please set the home area] is displayed, press [MENU/SET]. Then, press the left/right cursor buttons to set your home area and press [MENU/SET]. The current time and home area are set.
To change time settings, select [Clock Set] from [Rec] or [Setup] menu, then follow steps 3 and 4 above. Refer to the next page for menu setting instructions.
Setting the Menu
Refer to the following procedures to operate the menus. Example: Setting [AF Mode] from Program AE Mode.
- Press [MENU/SET] to display the menu. Use cursor buttons to select [Rec] and press [MENU/SET]. Menu type can also be selected by touch.
- Press the up/down cursor buttons to select [AF Mode] and then press [MENU/SET]. (Setting display may vary depending on the item.)
- Press the up/down or left/right cursor buttons to select the desired setting and then press [MENU/SET] to set.
- Press the [Trash/Return] button several times to close the menu.
Taking Pictures
- Press the Camera [ON/OFF] button (A).
- Set to the desired recording mode (B).
Recording Mode

A | Determine aperture, then record pictures. |
S | Determine shutter speed, then record pictures. |
M | Determine aperture and shutter speed, then record pictures. |
C1, C2 | Record pictures using pre-registered settings. |
Panorama Symbol | Record panorama pictures. |
SCN | Take pictures using Scene modes. |
Picture Effect Symbol | Take pictures by selecting your preferred picture effect. |
Take a Picture
- Press the shutter button halfway (press lightly and focus).
- Press the shutter button fully (press all the way to record).
Recording Motion Pictures
You can record motion pictures with audio (stereo). Zoom can also be used during recording.
- Press the motion picture button (A) to start recording.
- Press the motion picture button (A) again to end recording.
- Immediately release the motion picture button after pressing it all the way.
- You can continuously record a motion picture in [MP4] for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds or approx. 4 GB. (Recording in [MP4] with [FHD/25p] creates larger files, shortening recording time.)
- If [Rec Quality] of [AVCHD] motion pictures is set to [FHD], you can continuously record for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds.
- If the surrounding temperature is high, or a motion picture is recorded continuously, a temperature warning symbol (thermometer) is displayed and recording may stop halfway to protect the camera.
- Motion pictures cannot be recorded in the built-in memory.
Viewing Your Pictures
- Press the Playback button (A).
- Drag your finger across the screen, and select the picture to be played back.
- Holding down the Playback button while the camera is off turns the camera on in Playback Mode.
- To play back a motion picture, touch the play symbol (triangle) after selecting a picture.
- To switch to Recording Mode, press the playback button again or press the shutter button halfway during playback.
Deleting Pictures
Deleted pictures cannot be recovered.
- Press the [Trash/Return] button (A) to delete the displayed picture.
- Press the left/right cursor buttons to select [Yes] and then press [MENU/SET] (B).
