About the AC Adaptor (Supplied)

CAUTION!

  • To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock or product damage:
  • Do not install or place this unit in a bookcase, built-in cabinet or in another confined space. Ensure this unit is well ventilated.
  • The unit is in standby condition when the AC adaptor is connected. The primary circuit is always “live” as long as the AC adaptor is connected to an electrical outlet.

Cautions for Use

  • Do not use any other USB connection cables except the supplied one or a genuine Panasonic USB connection cable (DMW-USBC1: optional).
  • Always use a genuine Panasonic HDMI micro cable (RP-CHEU15: optional). Part number: RP-CHEU15 (1.5m) (4.9 feet).
  • Always use a genuine Panasonic AV cable (DMW-AVC1: optional).

Electromagnetic Equipment Proximity

Keep this unit as far away as possible from electromagnetic equipment (such as microwave ovens, TVs, video games etc.).

  • If this unit is used on top of or near a TV, pictures and/or sound may be disrupted by electromagnetic wave radiation.
  • Do not use this unit near cell phones as doing so may result in noise adversely affecting pictures and/or sound.
  • Recorded data may be damaged, or pictures may be distorted, by strong magnetic fields created by speakers or large motors.
  • Electromagnetic wave radiation generated by microprocessors may adversely affect this unit, disturbing pictures and/or sound.
  • If this unit is adversely affected by electromagnetic equipment and stops functioning properly, turn this unit off and remove the battery or disconnect AC adaptor (supplied)/AC adaptor (DMW-AC5E: optional). Then reinsert the battery or reconnect AC adaptor and turn this unit on.

Radio Transmitters or High-Voltage Lines

Do not use this unit near radio transmitters or high-voltage lines. Recording near these may adversely affect recorded pictures and/or sound.

Before Use

Camera Handling

  • Keep the camera away from excessive vibration, force, or pressure.
  • The camera is not dust, splash, or waterproof. Avoid using in dusty, sandy, or wet environments.

Condensation (Fogged Lens/LCD Monitor)

  • Condensation may occur with sudden temperature/humidity changes, potentially dirtying the lens/LCD, causing mold, or damaging the camera.
  • If condensation occurs, turn off the camera and wait about two hours. Fogging will clear naturally once the camera adjusts to ambient temperature.

About the Compass

Information measured with this unit is a rough estimate.

  • Do not use for professional applications.
  • When using for mountain climbing, trekking, or underwater, always bring a map and a dedicated measuring instrument in addition to using the camera's compass as a rough estimate.

Names and Functions of Main Parts

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ40 digital camera features:

  • Top View: Mode dial, Flash, Self-timer indicator/AF Assist Lamp, NFC antenna, Lens barrel, Microphones, GPS status indicator, [Wi-Fi] antenna, Speaker, Zoom lever, Motion picture button, Camera [ON/OFF] button, Shutter button.
  • Bottom View: Tripod mount (ensure tripod is stable; do not use screws longer than 5.5 mm (0.22 inch)), Card/Battery door, Release lever, DC coupler cover.
  • Rear View (LCD Monitor Side): [EXPOSURE] button, [MAP] button, LCD monitor, [Wi-Fi] button, Playback button, Cursor buttons, [MENU/SET] button, Charging lamp/Wi-Fi connection lamp, [Q.MENU]/[Trash/Return] (Delete/Cancel) button, [DISP.] button.

A hand strap is recommended to prevent dropping the camera.

Ports: [HDMI] socket (MicroHDMI TypeD), [AV OUT/DIGITAL] socket (8 pin). The AV OUT/DIGITAL socket is also used for battery charging. Do not connect any cables other than the HDMI micro cable (RP-CHEU15: optional) to the HDMI socket to avoid malfunction.

AC Adaptor Usage: Always use a genuine Panasonic AC adaptor (DMW-AC5E: optional). When using an AC adaptor, ensure that the Panasonic DC coupler (DMW-DCC14: optional) and AC adaptor (DMW-AC5E: optional) are used.

Touch Operations

This camera's touch screen senses pressure.

  • Touch: Press the screen and pull the finger back. Used to select icons or pictures.
  • Drag: Touch and slide your finger across the screen. Used to scroll pictures or change the displayed range.
  • Pinch (Spread/Pinch): On the touch panel, spread two fingers to zoom in, and pinch two fingers to zoom out. Used for zooming in/out of playback pictures. Quickly touching the screen twice also zooms in; if enlarged, it returns to the same magnification ratio.

Touch Screen Precautions:

  • If using a protective sheet, observe its precautions. Some sheets may impair screen appearance/operation.
  • If using a protective sheet or if the screen is unresponsive, touch with slightly more pressure.
  • If your hand presses against the screen while holding the camera, the touch screen will not work properly.
  • Do not press the LCD monitor with hard pointed tips (e.g., ballpoint pens) or fingernails.
  • Clean the LCD monitor with a soft, dry cloth if there are fingerprints or dirt.

Inserting and Removing the Battery or SD Memory Card (Optional)

Ensure the camera is turned off.

  1. Open Door: Slide the release lever to the [OPEN] position and open the card/battery door.
  2. Insert Battery/Card:
    • Battery: Insert the battery firmly until it locks by the lever.
    • Card: Insert the card firmly until it clicks. Do not touch the terminals on the back of the card.
  3. Close Door: Slide the release lever to the [LOCK] position.

To Remove:

  • Battery: Move the lever in the direction of the arrow.
  • Card: Push the card until it clicks, then pull it out.

Important Notes:

  • Always use genuine Panasonic batteries (DMW-BCM13E). Using other batteries may compromise product quality.
  • Keep Memory Cards out of reach of children to prevent swallowing.
  • Panasonic recommends using a Panasonic card.

Charging the Battery

  • The compatible battery is DMW-BCM13E.
  • The battery is not charged when shipped; charge before use.
  • Charge indoors with the supplied AC adaptor (10 °C to 30 °C / 50 °F to 86 °F).

Ensure the camera is turned off.

  1. Connect: Insert the battery into the camera, then connect the camera to the supplied AC adaptor or a PC via the supplied USB connection cable.

Charging Lamp Status:

  • On: Charging in progress (approx. 210 min. if fully depleted).
  • Off: Charging stops.

AC Adaptor Usage Precautions:

  • Do not use any USB connection cables other than the supplied one or a genuine Panasonic USB connection cable (DMW-USBC1: optional).
  • Do not use any AC adaptors other than the supplied one.
  • Do not use the supplied AC adaptor or USB connection cable with other devices.

Setting the Clock

The clock is not set when the camera is shipped. Disconnect the unit from the AC adaptor (supplied).

  1. Press the Camera [ON/OFF] button.
  2. Press [MENU/SET].
  3. Press the cursor buttons (left/right) to select items (year, month, day, hour, minute, display order or time display format), and press the cursor buttons (up/down) to set.
  4. Press [MENU/SET] to confirm. (To cancel, press the [Trash/Return] button.)
  5. Confirm the setting and press [MENU/SET]. (To return to the previous screen, press the [Trash/Return] button.)
  6. Press the cursor buttons (left/right) to select [Yes] and press [MENU/SET] if automatically correcting time of day using the GPS function.
    • To manually set date and time, select [No].
    • When automatic time adjustment using GPS is selected, [GPS Setting] is set to [ON].

Changing Time Settings

Select [Clock Set] from [Rec] or [Setup] menu, then follow steps 3 and 4 above. Refer to the next page for menu setting instructions.

Setting the Menu

To operate menus, for example, setting [AF Mode] from the [Program AE] Mode:

  1. Display Menu: Press [MENU/SET].
    • Use cursor buttons to select [Rec] and press [MENU/SET]. Menu type can also be selected by touch.
  2. Select AF Mode: Press cursor buttons (up/down) to select [AF Mode] and then press [MENU/SET].
    • Depending on the item, its setting may appear differently.
  3. Set AF Mode: Press cursor buttons (left/right) to select the desired setting and then press [MENU/SET] to set.
  4. Close Menu: Press the [Trash/Return] button several times to close the menu.

Taking Pictures

  1. Press the Camera [ON/OFF] button.
  2. Set to the desired recording mode using the mode dial.

Recording Mode Options:

  • iA (Intelligent Auto): Take pictures with automatic settings.
  • P (Program AE): Take pictures with automatic shutter speed and aperture value settings.
  • A (Aperture-priority AE): Determine aperture, then record pictures.
  • S (Shutter-priority AE): Determine shutter speed, then record pictures.
  • M (Manual Exposure): Determine aperture and shutter speed, then record pictures.
  • C1/C2 (Custom): Record pictures using pre-registered settings.
  • Panorama: Record panorama pictures.
  • SCN (Scene Mode): Take pictures using Scene modes.
  • Picture Effect: Take pictures by selecting your preferred picture effect.

Take a Picture:

  1. Press halfway: Press the shutter button lightly to focus.
  2. Press fully: Press the shutter button all the way to record.

Recording Motion Pictures

Record motion pictures with audio (stereo). Zoom can be used during recording.

  1. Press the motion picture button to start recording.
  2. Press the motion picture button again to end recording.

Notes:

  • Immediately release the motion picture button after pressing it all the way.
  • Continuous MP4 recording is limited to 29 minutes 59 seconds or approx. 4 GB. (Recording in [MP4] with [FHD/25p] creates larger files, so recording time may be shorter than 29 minutes 59 seconds.)
  • Continuous AVCHD recording is limited to 29 minutes 59 seconds.
  • If surrounding temperature is high or continuous recording occurs, a thermometer symbol may display, and recording may stop to protect the camera.
  • Motion pictures cannot be recorded in the built-in memory.

Viewing Your Pictures

  1. Press the Playback button.
  2. Drag your finger across the screen and select the picture to be played back.

Playback Notes:

  • Holding down the Playback button when the camera is off turns the camera on in Playback Mode.
  • To play a motion picture, touch the play icon after selecting it.
  • To switch to Recording Mode, press the playback button again or press the shutter button halfway during playback.

Deleting Pictures

Deleted pictures cannot be recovered.

  1. Press the [Trash/Return] button to delete the displayed picture.
  2. Press the cursor buttons (left/right) to select [Yes] and then press [MENU/SET].

GPS and Map Functions

Before use, read "Licence Agreement for Place Name and Map Data" (Operating Instructions for advanced features).

This camera records location information with pictures and can automatically adjust time or display picture locations on a map during playback.

Using the GPS Function to Execute Positioning

  1. Press [MENU/SET].
  2. Press cursor buttons (up/down) to select [GPS] menu and press [MENU/SET].
  3. Press cursor buttons (up/down) to select [GPS Setting] and press [MENU/SET].
    • A message appears; confirm by pressing [MENU/SET].

When [GPS Setting] is [ON], GPS functions even if the camera is turned off.

  • Electromagnetic waves from the camera can affect instruments. During airplane takeoff/landing or in restricted areas, set [Airplane Mode] to [ON] and turn off the camera.
  • When [GPS Setting] is [ON] and [Airplane Mode] is [OFF], battery power will drain even if the camera is OFF.

Displaying the Status and Result of Positioning

Icons on the LCD monitor indicate positioning status. If successful, the camera searches its internal database for place name information (name of place and landmark) and displays it.

  • GPS Reception Icon: The number of lit bars indicates the number of GPS satellites successfully received. If three bars do not light and the icon turns off, positioning was unsuccessful.
  • Positioning Result Icons: Indicate time elapsed after successful positioning. If "GPS" is displayed, positioning failed, and no location/place name information is available.

Positioning Notes:

  • Positioning takes longer in environments with poor GPS signal reception. Refer to "Using the GPS function to record the location of a picture" (Operating Instructions for advanced features) for details.
  • Even with good GPS reception, it takes approx. 2 to 3 minutes for successful positioning under these conditions:
    • First-time positioning.
    • [GPS Setting] was set to [OFF].
    • [Airplane Mode] was set to [ON] and the camera was turned off.
    • Battery was removed.

Confirming the Place Where You Took a Picture Using a Map

Display a map showing the picture's location or your current location.

  • Copy map data from the supplied DVD to a memory card for more detailed maps. Refer to "Using the map data on the disc (supplied)" (Operating Instructions for advanced features).
  1. Press [MAP] button in playback mode.

Touch the screen to display the current location (if positioning is available).

  • Zoom in/out of the map using the zoom lever or pinch function.
  • Drag the screen or press cursor buttons to operate the map display location.
  • Press the [Trash/Return] button to return to the previous display.

Displaying the Recording Location

  • Pressing the [DISP.] button displays pictures recorded nearby in a list.
  • Touch to display another picture.
  • Touch to narrow down the pictures to be displayed (Picture list).

Recording/Viewing Pictures with a Smartphone/Tablet

Use the Wi-Fi function to connect to another device via wireless LAN for remote recording and transferring pictures to a TV or PC. This section details Wi-Fi connection with a smartphone/tablet for remote recording and picture transfer.

Installing "Panasonic Image App"

Install "Image App" on your smartphone/tablet to operate the camera remotely for recording or playback. "Panasonic Image App" is an application provided by Panasonic for Wi-Fi-compatible LUMIX cameras.

Installation Procedure:

Connect your smartphone/tablet to the Internet and install "Panasonic Image App" from:

  • "Google Play™ Store" (for Android)
  • "App Store℠" (for iOS)

Version: 1.2 or above

Supported OS: Android 2.2 - 4.2, iOS 4.3 - 6.0

  • Search for "Panasonic Image App" in the app store.
  • High packet communication fees may apply when downloading over a mobile network.
  • For [Wi-Fi Direct] connection, Android OS 4.0 or above is required, and the device must be Wi-Fi Direct compatible.
  • Service may not function properly depending on the smartphone/tablet type. For compatible devices, see the support site: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/ (English only).

Easily Connect to a Smartphone/Tablet (NFC)

Use NFC (Near Field Communication) for easy Wi-Fi connection to a smartphone/tablet for remote recording and picture transfer. This function requires NFC compatible Android devices (2.3.3 or above) and may not be available on certain models.

Preparation on the Smartphone/Tablet Side:

  • Install "Image App".
  • Set Wi-Fi function to "ON". (Refer to your smartphone/tablet manual for settings.)

When Manually Connecting Without NFC:

  1. Operating the Unit:
    1. Press the [Wi-Fi] button.
    2. Press cursor buttons (up/down) to select [New Connection] and press [MENU/SET].
    3. Press cursor buttons (up/down) to select [Remote Shooting] and press [MENU/SET].
  2. On Your Smartphone/Tablet:
    1. Select the SSID displayed on the camera and enter the password.
      • SSID differs by connection method.
      • To connect [Via Network], select a wireless access point and adjust settings.
    2. Start "Image App". When connected, live images from the camera will display on the "Image App" screen.

Connecting to a Smartphone/Tablet (NFC Steps)

  1. Start "Image App" on your smartphone/tablet.
  2. Place your smartphone/tablet next to the camera unit (within 5 mm / 0.20 inch) over the designated NFC area.
    • Do not bump devices strongly.
    • For NFC compatible device information, contact the device manufacturer.
    • If no immediate reaction, slightly move the smartphone/tablet's position.
  3. Press cursor buttons (left/right) to select [Yes] and press [MENU/SET].
  4. Place your smartphone/tablet over the NFC area of the unit again.
    • When connected, live images from the camera will display on your smartphone/tablet.
    • The connected smartphone/tablet is registered. For future connections, repeat steps 1 and 2.

Taking Pictures via a Smartphone/Tablet (Remote Recording)

  1. Select the remote recording icon on your smartphone/tablet.
  • Recorded images are saved in the camera.
  • Some settings are unavailable.
  • Screen display differs by operating system.
  • Cannot be set for recording AVCHD motion pictures at [50p] in [FHD].
  • If internal camera temperature rises due to high ambient temperature or continuous motion picture recording, recording may stop to protect the camera. A picture quality setting change message may also display at recording start.

Playing Back Pictures in the Camera (via Smartphone/Tablet)

  1. Select the playback icon on your smartphone/tablet.
  • Pictures can be saved to the smartphone/tablet.
  • Pictures can be sent to WEB services.
  • Screen display differs by operating system.
  • Motion pictures stored in the camera cannot be played back directly. Save them to your smartphone/tablet first, then play back.

Transferring a Still Picture Easily to Your Smartphone/Tablet

With "Image App" installed, use NFC to easily send a single still picture to your smartphone/tablet.

  1. Start "Image App" on your smartphone/tablet.
  2. Display the still picture to be transferred on the camera's 1-picture screen (full screen).
  3. Place your smartphone/tablet next to the camera unit over the NFC area. The displayed still picture will be transferred.

Picture transfer may take several minutes depending on the environment.

Reading the Operating Instructions (PDF Format)

More detailed instructions are in "Operating Instructions for advanced features (PDF format)" on the supplied disc. Install it on your PC to read.

To read the supplied DVD, use a DVD drive with single-sided dual layer support.

For Windows:

  1. Turn on the PC and insert the disc containing the Operating Instructions (supplied).
  2. Click [Operating Instructions].
  3. Select the desired language and click [Operating Instructions] to install. (To return to the install menu, click the return button.)
  4. Double-click the "Operating Instructions" shortcut icon on the desktop.

When the Operating Instructions (PDF format) Will Not Open:

You need Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, or Adobe Reader 7.0 or later to browse or print the PDF. Download and install a compatible version from http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/.

Installing Supplied Software

Preparations:

  • Check your PC environment.
  • Close all running applications before inserting the disc.

Insert the disc and install the software.

  • For Windows: Click [Applications] on the install menu.
  • For Mac (LUMIX Map Tool): Double-click [LUMIX Map Tool.pkg] within [Application] - [MAPTOOL] of the DVD (supplied).
