Unlike competitors who use off-the-shelf drivers, Laney partnered with its sister company, HH Audio, to ensure every note resonates with clarity and power. The DBF50 offers enhanced versatility with two footswitchable channels (FET and Tube) for exceptional tonal control. Whether playing live or recording in the studio, the DBF50 delivers modern performance with a vintage feel.

Controls

Top Panel Controls

1. INPUT: 1/4" mono jack with a 1MΩ input impedance for connecting an active or passive bass. For optimal performance, use a good quality instrument cable.

2. VOLUME FET: Controls the level of the FET channel. This channel offers a clean, fast, articulate response with punchy bass.

3. CHANNEL SELECT SWITCH: Switches the selected channel between FET, DRIVE, or a combination of both. It can also be changed remotely.

4. PRE-SHAPE:

  • PRE-SHAPE Active: Scoops the mids and boosts the upper and lower frequency content.
  • PRE-SHAPE Disabled: Normal operation.

5. DRIVE: Adjusts the pre-gain of the DRIVE channel. With low settings, the DRIVE channel will have subtle saturation, providing a characteristic warm tone. With high settings, the DRIVE channel's preamp is pushed to its maximum, providing more grit and distortion.

6. CHANNEL INDICATOR: The LED to the right of the DRIVE control indicates the current active channel. It is Green for FET and RED for MIX and DRIVE.

7. VOLUME: Controls the post-gain level of the DRIVE channel. Use it in conjunction with the DRIVE control to achieve the perfect overdrive tone at the desired volume.

8. BASS: Increasing this control adds more low frequencies to the sound, ideal for enhancing the subwoofer. Decreasing this control reduces low frequencies, useful for controlling bass feedback or cleaning up a muddy sound.

9. MID: Increasing the control boosts the MID band, helping the bass to stand out in a busy mix, while decreasing the control creates a tighter sound and a modern tone.

10. TREBLE: Increases the higher frequencies, providing greater clarity in the treble. Decrease the control to eliminate the highest frequencies, ideal for a smooth and subtle sound.

11. TILT: Functions as an overall tone balance control. Turning towards the treble clef reduces bass frequencies and intensifies treble. Turning towards the bass clef produces the opposite effect. This control is perfect for fine-tuning the overall tone and ensuring its correct performance in any situation.

12. POWER INDICATOR: A red LED that will illuminate when the amplifier is connected to the mains and the POWER switch is in the ON position.

13. AUXILIAR: A 3.5mm jack for connecting an external sound source. Useful for jamming along with audio tracks.

14. PHONES: A 3.5mm jack for monitoring or silent practice.

15. MASTER VOLUME: Allows quick adjustment of the overall output level while maintaining the tone and coloration achieved at the input and EQ stage.

Rear Panel Controls

1. DI OUT (PRE): A balanced XLR output for connecting to an external device. For example, a home sound system, recording equipment, or a stage monitoring system. The DI signal is essentially a buffered version of the guitar input signal, just like PRE-VOLUME/DRIVE and EQ.

2. FX LOOP - SEND/RETURN: These jacks are used to connect an external effects device to your amplifier. Use the SEND jack to connect the input of your external device and the RETURN jack to connect the output of said device back to your amplifier.

3. REMOTE: A 1/4" jack provides remote access to the CHANNEL SELECT SWITCH (3) function located on the front panel. The pedal's function depends on the channel selector position. A LANEY FS1-mini pedal remote control (not included) is recommended.

  • UP: UNIT -> FET (Channel LED indicator: RED)
  • MIDDLE: MIX -> DRIVE (Channel LED indicator: RED)
  • DOWN: FET -> DRIVE (Channel LED indicator: GREEN)

4. SAFETY INFORMATION: Important information and amplifier serial number. Ensure that the ventilation slots are not covered.

5. POWER: A universal power input provided via an IEC C14 socket. A 110V to 240V AC power supply is accepted and no voltage selection or adjustment is necessary. Use the supplied power cable.

6. POWER SWITCH: The integrated switch provides power isolation to the incoming mains supply. Place the switch in the OFF position when the DBF50 is not in use.

Connections

This section details the various connections available on the Laney DBF50. The diagram illustrates how to connect instruments, external audio sources, effects, and output devices.

  • Bass Guitar: Connect to the INPUT jack using a 1/4" instrument cable.
  • External Audio Source: Connect to the AUX IN (3.5mm stereo jack) for playing along with backing tracks or other audio.
  • Headphones: Connect to the PHONES jack (3.5mm stereo jack) for silent practice.
  • External Effects: Utilize the FX LOOP SEND and FX RETURN jacks (1/4") to integrate effects pedals or processors into your signal chain.
  • DI Output: The DI OUT (PRE) balanced XLR output can be used to send a pre-EQ signal to a mixing console, audio interface, or PA system for recording or live sound reinforcement.
  • Remote Control: A 1/4" jack allows connection of a remote footswitch (e.g., Laney FS1-mini, sold separately) for convenient channel switching during performance.

Block Diagram

The block diagram illustrates the internal signal path of the Laney DBF50. The signal enters via the INPUT, passes through an optional PRE-SHAPE filter, and then splits into two channels: the FET CHANNEL (controlled by VOLUME FET) and the DRIVE CHANNEL (controlled by DRIVE and VOLUME). These channels can be mixed. The signal then proceeds through the EQ controls (BASS, MID, TREBLE, TILT) and the MASTER VOLUME before being sent to the SPEAKER, DI OUT, and PHONES outputs. The AUX IN signal is mixed in, and the REMOTE input controls channel selection.
