A Line of Fixed-Port Industrial Ethernet 10/100 Mbps Switches

Introduction

The EIS series Ethernet Interconnect Switch, part of the CTRLink® family, provides a robust solution for industrial applications requiring extended network diameter and increased throughput. The EIS series is a crucial component of control strategies.

These devices function as switching hubs, segmenting the Ethernet network into distinct collision domains. The EIS8-100T model offers eight twisted-pair ports for expansion. For applications requiring greater distance or galvanic isolation, three models provide two fiber ports alongside four twisted-pair ports for local drops: the EIS6-100T/FC and EIS6-100T/FT support a multimode fiber backbone, while the EIS6-100T/FCS accommodates single-mode fiber.

Each switch acts as a “bridge” between data links, enabling a larger network diameter than achievable with repeating hubs. To optimize speed and throughput, several functions are automatically negotiated:

The switch learns device ports by reading Ethernet frames and noting source addresses. It then builds and maintains a table of addresses and port assignments, restricting traffic to only the ports involved in a data exchange. This allows simultaneous data exchange on other ports, improving throughput. If a broadcast, multicast, or unicast transmission to an unknown destination arrives at a port, all other ports receive the transmission.

The switch front-panel features LEDs indicating link status, port activity, and data rate for each port. All units operate from low-voltage AC or DC power and can be mounted on a DIN-rail or panel.
