Walrus Audio ACS1 Amplifier + Cab Simulator
Introduction
The ACS1 is an amplifier and speaker cab simulator delivering the sound and feel of world-class amplifiers, complimentary speaker cabinets, and controllable room size. With the ACS1, players have expansive options to deliver their tone whether it's on stage, in the studio, or practicing at home. Simple controls, stereo in and out, on-board presets, and MIDI support make the ACS1 an immeasurable tool for a guitarist's arsenal.
Power Requirements
The ACS1 requires 9 volt DC power with a center negative polarity and a minimum current draw of 300mA. The use of an isolated power supply is recommended for powering all Walrus Audio Pedals. Daisy chain power supplies are not recommended.
Connections
The ACS1 features several input and output connections:
- Input Left (mono) / Input Right: Connect your guitar or other audio sources here. Supports mono or stereo input.
- Output Left (mono) / Output Right: Stereo outputs for connecting to amplifiers, mixers, or audio interfaces.
- MIDI In: Connect to a MIDI controller or upstream MIDI devices.
- MIDI Thru: Pass through incoming MIDI messages to downstream devices.
- Headphone Jack: For silent practice. Volume is controlled by the main Volume knob.
- USB: Used for loading IR files and updating firmware via the
walrusaudio.io
website.
Front panel indicators and controls include:
- Bypass LED: Illuminates solid when the pedal is active, off when bypassed.
- Bypass Switch: Engages or disengages the pedal's effects.
- Preset/Boost LED: Indicates the selected preset color (Red, Green, Blue). Turns purple when a preset is modified.
- Boost Switch: Engages a volume and/or gain boost.
Controls
The ACS1 offers comprehensive control over your tone:
- Bass: Shapes the low-end frequencies of the amp model. Turn up for a thicker sound, down to tame muddy pickups.
- Mid: Shapes the mid-range frequencies. Above noon provides punchy mids, below noon offers scooped sounds.
- Treb: Shapes the high frequencies. Turn up for sparkle, down to tame harshness. The tone stack varies with each amp model, with noon serving as a good starting point.
- Vol: Controls the overall output level, including the headphone output.
- Gain: Adjusts the amount of gain and character within each amp model. Affects overall volume, similar to a real amp.
- Room: Engages a tight room reverb effect to simulate a miked amplifier in a room. Turn down to disengage, up to add spatial depth.
- Cab Switch: Selects one of six on-board cabinet impulse responses (IRs). IRs are grouped into two sets of three.
- Front Cabs: Accessed by moving the toggle switch to positions A, B, or C.
- Back Cabs: Accessed by holding the Bypass Switch while moving the toggle to positions A, B, or C.
- L + R Switch: Determines how controls affect the stereo channels.
- '+' Position: Syncs all control changes across both Left and Right channels.
- 'L' Position: Allows independent control and sound shaping for the Left channel.
- 'R' Position: Allows independent control and sound shaping for the Right channel.
- Amp Switch: Selects between three classic amp models:
- Fullerton: Inspired by the Fender Deluxe Reverb, known for bright, clear tones and ample headroom.
- London: Inspired by a 1962 Marshall Bluesbreaker, offering harmonically rich, valve-driven breakup with articulate response.
- Dartford: Inspired by the Vox AC30, delivering jangly, high-end tones with bite and chime characteristic of the British Invasion era.
- Bypass Switch: Toggles the pedal on/off.
- Boost Switch: Applies a volume and/or gain boost. To set the boost, press the Boost Switch (LED flashes), adjust Volume/Gain knobs, then press again to confirm. Settings are saved per preset.
Cabinet Impulse Responses (IRs)
The ACS1 comes pre-loaded with six cabinet IRs designed by Walrus Audio to complement the amp models. Users can upload their own IRs via walrusaudio.io
. The IRs are organized as follows:
Front Cabs:
- A: Walrus Custom Fender® Deluxe Style
- B: Walrus Custom Marshall® 4x12 Style
- C: Walrus Custom Vox® Green Back Style
Back Cabs:
- A: Walrus Custom Fender® Super Reverb Style
- B: Walrus Custom Two Rock® Style
- C: Walrus Custom Vox® Blue Back Style
The L+R Switch allows for unique stereo configurations, such as using different amp/cab combinations on the left and right channels.
Presets
The ACS1 offers 128 preset slots. The first three presets are directly accessible from the pedal.
- Recalling Presets: Press both stomp switches simultaneously to cycle through the three on-board presets (Red, Green, Blue).
- Saving Presets:
- Navigate to the desired preset slot.
- Dial in your sound using the controls. The Preset/Boost LED will turn purple, indicating a modification.
- To save, press and hold both the Bypass and Boost switches until the LEDs stop blinking. The preset is now saved.
When a knob is turned, the Preset/Boost LED turns purple, reverting to the preset's color when the knob is returned to its saved position. This helps track parameter adjustments.
MIDI Control
The ACS1 can be controlled via standard MIDI messages.
- Connect your MIDI controller to the MIDI In port.
- Use the MIDI Thru port to connect to other MIDI devices.
- The default MIDI channel is 1.
Assigning MIDI Channel:
- Hold both stomp switches while powering up the pedal. Release when the LEDs flash white.
- Send a MIDI Program Change (PC) message on your desired MIDI channel.
- The LEDs will flash green momentarily, confirming the channel is saved.
