Keep the product away from open flames, extreme heat, and direct sunlight.
The Heavy Duty Smart Switch Gen5 current capacity must not exceed 40 amps.
Contains small parts; keep away from children.
Quick Start
Important: The Heavy Duty Smart Switch Gen5 must be wired behind an air break switch or circuit breaker for safety.
Before wiring, switch off the air break switch and confirm power is down. If the switch is out of sight, lock it to the "OFF" position and tag it to prevent unexpected power application.
Step 1: Mount the Switch
Mount your Heavy Duty Smart Switch on a wall as shown in the diagram. Diagram illustrating the mounting of the Heavy Duty Smart Switch Gen5 on a wall using a screw.
Step 2: Access Internal Electronics
Loosen the lower screw on your Heavy Duty Smart Switch to release its shell. Remove the shell to reveal the inner electronics. Diagram showing the Heavy Duty Smart Switch Gen5 shell being loosened and removed to reveal internal wiring terminals and components.
Step 3: Prepare Wires
Prepare the wires by stripping them to the necessary length. Add wire terminals to each wire. Diagram depicting wires being stripped to the correct length and fitted with wire terminals.
Step 4: Wiring
Wire your Heavy Duty Smart Switch according to the diagram. Connect live lines from the Air Break Switch to the corresponding terminals marked L1 and L2 on your Heavy Duty Smart Switch. Connect Neutral (N) and Ground (GND) lines to the terminals labeled N and GND. Similarly, wire the electric load to the Load terminals. Tighten all screws.
Diagram illustrating wiring connections for the Heavy Duty Smart Switch Gen5. It shows terminals for AC Power Input (L1, L2, N, GND) and Load Output (L1, L2, N, GND). Wire color codes for US (N: White, L1: Black, L2: Red or Blue, GND: Green/Yellow) and EU (N: Blue, L1: Brown, GND: Yellow-Green) are indicated. Connections to an Air Break Switch are also shown.
Important: Ensure wire terminals are connected firmly to their respective terminals. Check the power and current requirements of your equipment. Use AWG10 wire for currents less than 32A, and AWG8 wire for currents exceeding 32A.
Warning: Device current must not exceed 40A.
Step 5: Power On and Z-Wave Pairing
Power on your Heavy Duty Smart Switch. Add it to your Z-Wave network by placing your gateway or controller into Z-Wave pair/inclusion mode and pressing the Action Button on the switch. Refer to your gateway/controller manual for specific instructions.
Step 6: Final Mounting
The product can be mounted on a wall or surface. Drill a Ø2.5mm hole for the upper part of the switch and a second hole 138mm below it. Affix the screws. Your installation is now complete.
Installation Notes:
- Install in a ventilated area with good heat dissipation.
- Ensure connection to the protective earth (green/yellow) line.
- Ensure front-end access to short-circuit protection.
- Only professionals should install, repair, or open the switch's casing.
Alternative wiring schematics for 120VAC (1 phase), 240VAC (2 phase), or EU applications are available online at Aeotec Wiring Schematics.
Z-Wave Network Instructions
Your Heavy Duty Smart Switch must be paired with a Z-Wave network to receive wireless commands and report energy consumption.
Note: The LED blinks if the switch is not paired.
Tip: Turn off connected devices before adding or removing from a Z-Wave network to prevent load damage.
Adding your Heavy Duty Smart Switch Gen5 to a Z-Wave Network
Pair your switch into your existing Z-Wave network by following these steps:
- Place your gateway or controller into Z-Wave pair or inclusion mode (refer to your controller/gateway manual).
- Press the Action Button on your Switch.
- If successfully linked, the LED will stop blinking. If unsuccessful, it will continue to blink.
Removing your Heavy Duty Smart Switch Gen5 from a Z-Wave Network
Unpair your switch from your Z-Wave network:
- Place your gateway or controller into Z-Wave unpair or exclusion mode (refer to your controller/gateway manual).
- Press the Action Button on your Switch.
- If successfully unlinked, the LED will begin to blink. If unsuccessful, it will return to its last LED state.
Advanced Functions
Turn your Heavy Duty Smart Switch Gen5 On or Off
The switch can be turned on or off via Z-Wave commands using Basic Command Class and Binary Switch Command Class. Consult your Z-Wave network controller's manual for specific instructions.
Monitoring Power Consumption
The switch can report energy usage (Watts or kWh) to a Z-Wave gateway/controller if supported. Energy consumption will be displayed in the user interface. This uses Meter Command Class and Multilevel Sensor Command Class. Automatic reports go to association group 1.
More Advanced Configurations
The Smart Switch Gen5 offers advanced device configurations, which may not be exposed in all gateways. Manual configuration is possible through most Z-Wave gateways.
Configuration details can be found at: Aeotec Configuration Sheet.
