Installation, Use, and Care Quick Start Manual

Important Safety Information

⚠️ WARNING

To Reduce the Risk of Fire, Electric Shock, or Injury to Persons, Observe the Following:

  • Use this unit only in the manner intended by the manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer for questions.
  • Before servicing or cleaning, switch power off at the service panel and lock it.
  • Installation and electrical wiring must be done by qualified personnel according to all applicable codes and standards.
  • Ensure sufficient air for proper combustion and exhaust of gases from fuel-burning equipment to prevent backdrafting. Follow manufacturer guidelines and safety standards (NFPA, ASHRAE, local codes).
  • When cutting or drilling into walls or ceilings, do not damage electrical wiring or other utilities.
  • Ducted fans must always be vented to the outdoors.
  • Do not use with any separate solid-state speed control device.
  • Use only metal ductwork to reduce the risk of fire.
  • This unit must be grounded.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves when installing, servicing, or cleaning.
  • Installer must conform to local regulations if they are more restrictive than this document.

⚠️ WARNING

To Reduce the Risk of a Range Top Grease Fire:

  • Never leave surface units unattended at high settings. Heat oils slowly.
  • Always turn the hood ON when cooking at high heat or when flambeing food.
  • Clean ventilating fans frequently; do not let grease accumulate.
  • Use proper pan size appropriate for the surface element.

To Reduce the Risk of Injury in the Event of a Range Top Grease Fire:

  1. Smother flames with a lid, cookie sheet, or metal tray, then turn off the burner. EVACUATE AND CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT if flames do not go out immediately.
  2. NEVER PICK UP A FLAMING PAN.
  3. DO NOT USE WATER; it can cause a violent steam explosion.
  4. Use an extinguisher ONLY if you have a Class ABC extinguisher, know how to operate it, the fire is small and contained, the fire department is called, and you have a clear exit.
  5. ⚠️ CAUTION

    • For indoor residential use only.
    • Do not vent exhaust air into spaces within walls, ceilings, attics, crawl spaces, or garages.
    • Use cleaning agents or detergents with care.
    • Avoid using food products that produce flames under the Range Hood.
    • For general ventilating use only; do not exhaust hazardous or explosive materials.
    • Keep drywall spray, construction dust, etc., off the power unit to prevent motor bearing damage and impeller imbalance.
    • The hood motor has a thermal overload that will shut it off if overheated; it will restart when cooled. If it continues to shut off and restart, have it serviced.
    • The bottom of the hood must be at least 24" and a maximum of 30" above the cooktop for optimal capture.
    • Use only with approved range hood cord connection kits.

Recommended Tools and Accessories

  • Measuring tape
  • Phillips screwdriver no. 2
  • Nut driver or socket 3/8"
  • Flat blade screwdriver (for knock-out holes)
  • Saw (for cabinet holes)
  • Sheet metal shears
  • Pliers
  • Metal foil duct tape
  • Scissors (for duct tape)
  • Pencil
  • Wire stripper
  • 2 Appropriate wire nuts
  • Strain relief, 7/8" diameter (for house wiring cable)

1. Install the Ductwork (Ducted Installation Only)

ℹ️ NOTE: To reduce the risk of fire, use only metal ductwork.

Step 1: Decide the path for the ductwork between the powerpack insert and the outside. (See FIG. 1)

Step 2: A straight, short duct run allows the hood to perform most efficiently.

Step 3: Long duct runs, elbows, and transitions reduce hood performance. Use as few as possible. Larger ducting may be required for longer runs.

Step 4: Install a wall cap or roof cap (sold separately). Connect metal ductwork to the cap and work back towards the hood. Seal joints with 2" metal foil duct tape.

2. Remove the Adapter/Damper

Detach and set aside the 3½" x 10" adapter/damper and the 6-in. round damper (grey parts) by removing their 2 retaining screws. Discard the screws. (See FIG. 2)

3. Remove the Cabinet Brackets

Detach the cabinet brackets (grey part) from the back of the powerpack insert by removing its 3 retaining screws. Discard the screws. (See FIG. 3)

Fold up and down the bracket until it splits into two parts. Keep the brackets for potential future use. (See FIG. 4)

ℹ️ NOTE: Both cabinet brackets have one wide edge and one narrow edge (See FIG. 5) to accommodate different cabinet widths.

4. Prepare the Cabinet

⚠️ WARNING

The cabinet must be secured to wall studs or other wooden framework behind the drywall to support the unit's weight. Failure to do so may cause personal injury or damage to the countertop or cooktop.

NOTES:

  • A. The unit must be installed inside the cabinet.
  • B. The unit should be mounted centered laterally over the cooktop burners.
  • C. For back-to-front positioning, follow local building codes.

Step 1: Cut a hole in the bottom of the cabinet using the dimensions shown. (See FIG. 6)

Step 2: Measure the remaining material of the cabinet bottom sides (C). If 1/4" or more, proceed to Step 7. (See FIG. 7)

Step 3: If less than 1/4" remaining material, carefully remove those strips. Measure the cabinet inner width (D). Refer to the table below to select the correct cabinet bracket edge configuration. (See FIG. 7)

Cabinet Width Measurement (D):

  • Narrow Edge Configuration: From 28-1/16" to less than 28-1/2"
  • Wide Edge Configuration: From 28-1/2" to 29"

Step 4: Note the location of the "Ease of Install" hooks on the unit (distance from the front flange, See FIG. 8). Temporarily insert the unit into the cabinet, and while holding it, mark the position of the "Ease of Install" hooks (E) on both cabinet side walls. Remove the unit.

Step 5: Install the cabinet brackets as follows: (See FIG. 9)

  • Align the bracket flush with the bottom of the right cabinet side panel, centering the hook position (E) between the bottom embossed holes. For the narrow edge configuration, trace a line on the top of the bracket. For the wide edge configuration, trace a line at the bottom of the central slots.
  • Lift the bracket flush with the traced line. Assemble the bracket to the cabinet side panel using 2 no. 8 x 5/8" wood screws (included) through the upper holes.
  • ℹ️ NOTE: Do not use the embossed holes to attach the bracket.
  • Repeat steps for the left cabinet side panel.

Step 6: Measure the distance between both bottom bracket edges (F). (See FIG. 10)

Bracket Distance (F):

  • Narrow Edge: From 27-7/8" to less than 28-1/16"
  • Wide Edge: From 28-1/16" to 28-5/16"

If the measured distance needs to be shortened, screw two no. 8-32 x 1/4" machine screws into each bottom embossed bracket hole to slightly bend the bottom part of the brackets. Screw both brackets until the correct distance is obtained. (See FIG. 11)

Step 7: Install filler strips to cover the back bottom edge of the cabinet. Use 4 no. 6 x 1/2" truss head wood screws (included) to mount them. (See FIG. 12)

⚠️ CAUTION

Never use an electric screwdriver or drill to screw the filler; use a standard screwdriver.

Horizontal Exhaust Installation Only

This unit is factory-set for vertical exhaust but can be converted for horizontal exhaust (3½" x 10" ducting only).

Step 8: Cut the hole for the horizontal exhaust through the back wall of the cabinet using the dimensions shown. (See FIG. 13)

5. Prepare the Unit

All Installations:

Step 1: Remove any protective polyfilm from the unit and parts.

Step 2: Remove the grease filters by pushing down on the latch tab and tilting them downward. (See FIG. 14)

Step 3: Disassemble the electrical compartment cover from inside the unit by removing its retaining screw. Set aside the cover and parts bag. (See FIG. 15)

Step 4: Punch out one of the two knock-out holes. Install an appropriate 7/8" diameter strain relief. (See FIG. 16)

ℹ️ NOTE: The HCK44 cord connection kit (optional) can be used instead of the house power cable.

Step 5: Remove and set aside the internal screw on the top of the unit, if present. (See FIG. 17)

Horizontal Exhaust Installation Only:

Step 6: Unplug the blower cable from its connector on the faceplate. Remove the faceplate by taking out its 4 retaining screws (two per side). Set aside the faceplate and screws. (See FIG. 18)

Step 7: Remove the 6 screws (2 per side, 2 in front) retaining the blower support plate to the top of the unit. Carefully lift out the blower and its support plate. (See FIG. 19)

Step 8: From inside the unit, detach the back plate by removing its two retaining nuts using a 3/8" socket. Set aside the nuts and plate. (See FIG. 20)

Step 9: Install the back plate on top of the unit where the blower support plate was. Orient holes towards the back. Assemble using the 6 screws removed in Step 7. (See FIG. 21)

Vertical Exhaust Installation Only:

Step 10: For rectangular ducting, attach the 3½" x 10" adapter/damper to the top of the unit over the blower exhaust opening using 2 included no. 8-18 x 1/4" metal screws. Ensure the damper hinge is towards the front. (See FIG. 22)

For round ducting, attach the included 6-in. or 8-in. round adapter/damper using 4 included no. 8-18 x 1/4" metal screws. Ensure the damper hinge is parallel to the unit sides. (See FIG. 22)

6. Install the Unit

Step 1: Run the house power cable from the service panel to the unit location, stubbing out about 2 feet inside the cabinet. Insert the cable through the strain relief.

ℹ️ NOTE: Not necessary if using the optional HCK44 cord connection kit.

Step 2: Insert the unit into the cabinet until you feel a "click" from both sides, indicating the "Ease of Install" hooks are engaged. Ensure hooks are retaining the unit. (See FIG. 23)

ℹ️ NOTE: The unit may protrude slightly until secured.

Step 3: Lift the unit until its flange contacts the cabinet. Secure the unit to the cabinet using 4 included no. 8 x 5/8" wood screws (2 per side) in the appropriate holes. (See FIG. 25)

⚠️ WARNING

The "Ease of Install" hooks TEMPORARILY hold the unit. The unit MUST BE secured with the 4 screws.

⚠️ WARNING

Never use this unit as a shelf.

Horizontal Exhaust Installation Only:

Step 4: From inside the unit, slide the 3½" x 10" adapter/damper into the horizontal duct and attach it to the unit with aluminum duct tape. Ensure the damper opens correctly. (See FIG. 26)

Step 5: Insert the blower with its support plate into the unit and attach it using the nuts removed in Step 8 of "Prepare the Unit". (See FIG. 27)

Step 6: Reinstall the faceplate and secure it with its 4 retaining screws. Plug the blower cable into its connector. (See FIG. 28)

7. Connect Ductwork

Vertical Exhaust Installation: Use 6-in. round, 8-in. round, or 3½" x 10" metal duct to connect the adapter/damper to the ductwork above. Seal the joint with aluminum duct tape. (See FIG. 29)

Non-Ducted Installation: The HARKBN30 non-duct kit is required (purchase separately). Follow the instructions included with the kit.

8. Wiring

⚠️ WARNING

Risk of electric shock. Electrical wiring must be done by qualified personnel. Switch power off at the service panel before connecting wires.

Step 1: Using appropriate wire nuts, connect the house power cable to the unit wiring: BLACK to BLACK, WHITE to WHITE, and GREEN or bare wire to the GREEN ground screw. (See FIG. 30)

Step 2: Reinstall the electrical cover, ensuring bottom tabs are inserted. Secure with its retaining screw. (See FIG. 31)

⚠️ CAUTION

Take care not to pinch wires when reinstalling the cover.

9. Install the Filters

Ducted Installation: Reinstall the grease filters.

Non-Ducted Installation: Attach non-ducted filters to the back of the grease filters using clips. Order part number S99010464-130 for new non-ducted filters.

10. Maintenance

ALWAYS SWITCH OFF THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY BEFORE CARRYING OUT ANY OPERATIONS.

Grease Filters: Clean frequently with warm dishwashing detergent solution. Filters are dishwasher safe. Use non-phosphate detergent to prevent discoloration (discoloration not covered by warranty). Hand wash with mild detergent to minimize discoloration.

Non-Ducted Recirculation Filter: Replace every 3 to 6 months, or more often if heavy grease cooking is done.

Stainless Steel Cleaning:

  • Do: Wash regularly with warm water and mild soap. Clean in the direction of polish lines. Rinse well and wipe dry. Use specialized stainless steel cleaner if desired.
  • Don't: Use steel wool, scrapers, harsh/abrasive cleansers. Allow dirt to accumulate. Let construction dust reach the unit; cover during construction.
  • Avoid Detergents Containing: Bleach, chloride, fluoride, iodide, bromide, or combustible products (acetone, alcohol, etc.).

11. Operation

Soft-touch control panel:

NOTES:

  • A beep confirms each key press. To disable beeps, press and hold the Lights key (2) for 5 seconds when fan and lights are OFF. Press again to re-enable.
  • Key backlights turn ON when pressed and OFF when the function is turned OFF.

Fan: Press to turn ON to the last saved speed (or LOW if none saved). Press again to cycle through speeds (LOW, MEDIUM-LOW, MEDIUM-HIGH, HIGH, OFF). A long press when ON turns the fan OFF and saves the speed. A filter cleaning reminder flashes the fan key backlight if cleaning is due.

Lights: Press to turn ON to the last saved intensity (or LOW if none saved). Press again for HIGH intensity. Press again to turn OFF. A long press saves the current intensity.

Delay OFF: When the fan is ON, press this key to activate a 10-minute delay shut-off. The fan speed can be changed during the delay. Press the key again or turn off the fan to cancel the delay.

Heat Sentry™: This thermostat turns on or speeds up the blower if it senses excessive heat. If the blower is OFF, it turns ON to HIGH speed. If the blower is ON at a lower speed, it increases to HIGH speed. The fan speed returns to normal when the temperature drops. When Heat Sentry is active, the fan key backlight flashes, and speed cannot be changed.

⚠️ WARNING

The HEAT SENTRY thermostat can start the blower even when the hood is OFF. If this occurs, the blower cannot be turned off with its switch. To stop the blower, safely set the main power switch (located behind filters) to OFF.

CODE READY™ TECHNOLOGY ACTIVATION:

This feature allows changing the blower output from 600 CFM to 400 CFM or 300 CFM to meet Make-Up Air (MUA) code requirements. This change cannot be reverted and affects product performance.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Change cannot be reverted.
  • CRT can only be set within the first 5 minutes of applying power.
  • Power outages do not deactivate CRT.
  • Fan and lights must be OFF to initiate CRT procedure.

CRT Procedure:

1. Switch power ON and simultaneously press Fan (A) and Lights (B) keys for 5 seconds. Backlights will flash.

To select 400 CFM: Press and hold Fan (A) for 5 seconds. Release. Fan key backlight flashes. Press and hold Fan (A) again for 5 seconds to confirm. Fan key flashes twice, buzzer beeps twice. Locate CRT sticker and check the 400 CFM box.

To select 300 CFM: Press and hold Lights (B) for 5 seconds. Release. Lights key backlight flashes. Press and hold Lights (B) again for 5 seconds to confirm. Lights key flashes twice, buzzer beeps twice. Locate CRT sticker and check the 300 CFM box.
