Introduction
The DigiTech FreqOut Natural Feedback Creator is a revolutionary pedal that adds controllable, natural-sounding feedback harmonics to any guitar signal without coloring the original tone. It allows users to select from 7 different harmonic types, controlling the feedback gain and onset time. The LED ladder indicates effect status and feedback onset. The DRY switch determines if the clean signal is audible, and the MOMENTARY switch allows the footswitch to operate as a momentary or latching switch.
Steps to Use FreqOut:
- Set the GAIN, ONSET, and TYPE knobs to 12 o'clock.
- Set the MOMENTARY switch to "OFF" and the DRY switch to "ON".
- Engage the EFFECT footswitch; the central LED will illuminate to indicate the effect is active.
- Play a single note on your guitar; the feedback sustain should become audible. Adjust the GAIN and ONSET knobs for the desired feedback amount and build-up time.
- Select the desired harmonic frequency using the TYPE knob. Refer to "Using Harmonic Types" for more information.
- For a swell effect (similar to an *EBow™), turn the DRY switch OFF. Otherwise, leave it ON.
- Adjust the MOMENTARY switch for the desired footswitch operation (momentary or latching).
Key Features:
- Controllable, natural-sounding feedback for electric guitar.
- 7 harmonic feedback types.
- Adjustable feedback gain & onset controls.
- LED ladder provides effect On/Off & feedback onset status.
- Dry On/Off switch.
- Momentary or latching footswitch options.
- Authentic bypass operation.
- Robust and compact design.
- Solid construction.

User Interface Overview
The FreqOut pedal features several controls and indicators:
- 1. Power Input: Connects to the recommended 9VDC power adapter. Battery power is not available.
- 2. Feedback LED: The central LED illuminates to indicate the FreqOut effect is active. When active, the LEDs light up from inside out to display the feedback onset rate.
- 3. Output Jack: Connects to an amplifier input or the next pedal in your signal chain.
- 4. Effect Footswitch: Engages or disengages the FreqOut effect. It can function as a momentary or latching switch depending on the Momentary switch position.
- 5. Momentary Switch: Determines the footswitch operation. When set to "ON", the effect activates only while the footswitch is held down, useful for applying feedback to specific notes or passages. When set to "OFF", the footswitch acts as a standard effect pedal, toggling the effect On/Off with each press, providing more prominent feedback during performance.
- 6. Gain & Onset Knobs:
- Gain Knob: Adjusts the amount of feedback gain. Lower settings provide a subtle effect; higher settings increase feedback/sustain.
- Onset Knob: Determines how long it takes for the feedback to reach full strength. Lower settings reduce the time; higher settings increase it.
- 7. Type Knob: Selects one of seven feedback types:
- SUB: Produces feedback one octave below the note.
- 1ST: Produces unison (first harmonic) feedback.
- 2ND: Produces second harmonic feedback.
- 3RD: Produces third harmonic feedback.
- 5TH: Produces fifth harmonic feedback.
- NAT LOW: Produces various feedback frequencies in the lower harmonic range.
- NAT HIGH: Produces various feedback frequencies in a higher harmonic range.
- 8. Dry Switch: Activates or deactivates the clean signal while the effect is active. Note: If the Momentary switch is "ON" and the Dry switch is "OFF", no dry signal will pass through FreqOut.
- 9. Input Jack: Connect your instrument to this jack.
Note on Momentary Switch: When the momentary switch is set to "ON", FreqOut uses a buffered signal path. When set to "OFF", FreqOut provides a true bypass signal path.
Using Harmonic Types
Harmonic Feedback Types: The first five types (SUB, 1ST, 2ND, 3RD, 5TH) allow for predictable, repeatable feedback at specific intervals. The harmonic is defined as a multiple of the note's frequency (e.g., the 5th harmonic is 5 times the fundamental frequency, equivalent to two octaves plus a major third).
Natural Feedback Types: The two natural feedback types (NAT LOW and NAT HIGH) behave more like natural feedback, where results may vary each time you play the same note.
Tips for Natural Feedback:
- Achieving Low Frequency Feedback: Play softer, lower your tone, and use the neck pickup.
- Achieving High Frequency Feedback: Play notes with more force, open the tone control, and use the bridge pickup.
- Achieving Transition Feedback: High-frequency feedback is more likely to shift to lower frequencies as the note decays. Follow the high-frequency tips for more feedback transitions.
NAT LOW vs. NAT HIGH:
- NAT LOW: Restricts feedback frequencies to a lower range and does not allow feedback at the 5th harmonic or higher. This helps avoid "major" sounding feedback on minor chords.
- NAT HIGH: Allows feedback to have a slightly higher tone, thus slightly increasing the likelihood of feedback shifting to a mid-note.
Connections and Power Supply
Connecting the FreqOut Pedal to Your Setup:
- Turn off your amplifier's master volume control.
- Make all audio connections to the FreqOut as shown in the diagram.
- Connect the appropriate power adapter to the POWER input jack and the other end to an available AC outlet.
- Strum your guitar and gradually increase the amplifier's master volume control to the desired level.
Connection Diagram Description:
The diagram illustrates the following connections:
- Guitar Instrument -> FreqOut Input Jack.
- FreqOut Output Jack -> Amplifier Input.
- Optional: Other pedals can be connected between the FreqOut Output and the Amplifier Input.
- Power adapter connects to the FreqOut Power Input.
- Use only unbalanced TS instrument cables.
Note: The FreqOut pedal emulates the interaction between your guitar and amplifier. It is recommended to place it at the beginning of your effects chain. This provides a pure guitar signal and allows the pedal to correctly generate feedback harmonics.
