Warnings and Precautions
WARNINGS / ADVERTENCIAS / AVERTISSEMENTS
General safety warnings are provided, emphasizing proper installation procedures, electrical connections, and potential hazards like short circuits and overheating.
PRECAUTIONS on power supply and speaker connections
- DO NOT connect the speaker leads of the power cord to the car battery; otherwise, the unit will be seriously damaged.
- BEFORE connecting the speaker leads of the power cord to the speakers, check the speaker wiring in your car.
Installation
In-dash Mounting
To install the unit in your vehicle's dashboard:
- Use the appropriate installation kits for your car. Consult your JVC car audio dealer or a kit supplier if you have questions.
- The unit requires a 12 V DC power supply with a negative ground.
- Disconnect the car battery's negative terminal before making any electrical connections.
- Connect speakers with a maximum power of more than 50 W (4 Ω to 8 Ω impedance). Adjust the <AMP GAIN> setting if necessary (refer to the main INSTRUCTIONS manual, page 12).
- Insulate any unconnected wires with vinyl tape or similar material to prevent short circuits. Do not remove protective caps from unconnected wires or terminals.
- If a fuse blows, first check for short circuits in the wiring, then replace the fuse with one of the same rating.
- Install the unit in the vehicle's console.
- Mount the unit so the mounting angle is 30° or less.
- Ensure the unit is properly grounded to the car's chassis after installation.
- After installation, verify that the car's brake lamps, blinkers, wipers, etc., are functioning correctly.
- Be aware that metal parts of the unit, such as the heat sink and enclosure, can become hot during and shortly after use.
Part List
The following parts are typically included:
- A Control panel
- B Sleeve (for mounting)
- C Trim plate (for finishing the dashboard opening)
- D Power cord
- E Handles (for securing the unit)
Note: Bracket, Pocket, and Flat head screws (M5 x 8 mm) are not supplied with this unit.
Removing the Unit
To remove the unit from the dashboard:
- Release the rear section of the unit first.
- Then, carefully pull the unit out of the mounting sleeve.
Electrical Connections
This section details the wiring required to connect the JVC KD-R338/KD-R330 to your vehicle's power and speaker system.
Power and Ground Connections
Connect the power cord (D) as follows:
- Yellow wire: Connect to the vehicle's 12 V Battery terminal.
- Red wire: Connect to the vehicle's 12 V Ignition Switch. If your vehicle's factory wiring harness does not have an "12V ignition switch" lead, connect this red wire to the vehicle fuse block via a separate red lead and fuse tap (sold separately).
- Black wire: Connect securely to the vehicle's chassis (a clean, unpainted metal part) for grounding.
Speaker Connections
Connect the speaker wires from the unit to your vehicle's speakers. Ensure speakers have a minimum power handling of 50W and an impedance of 4 Ω to 8 Ω.
- Front Left Speaker: Connect the unit's White wire to the positive (+) terminal of the front left speaker, and the White (black stripe) wire to the negative (-) terminal.
- Front Right Speaker: Connect the unit's Gray wire to the positive (+) terminal of the front right speaker, and the Gray (black stripe) wire to the negative (-) terminal.
- Rear Left Speaker: Connect the unit's Green wire to the positive (+) terminal of the rear left speaker, and the Green (black stripe) wire to the negative (-) terminal.
- Rear Right Speaker: Connect the unit's Purple wire to the positive (+) terminal of the rear right speaker, and the Purple (black stripe) wire to the negative (-) terminal.
Other Connections
- Blue (white stripe) wire: Connect to the power antenna lead or amplifier turn-on lead.
- Blue wire: Connect to the automatic antenna control lead.
- Orange (white stripe) wire: Connect to the vehicle's illumination circuit to dim the display when headlights are on.
- Brown wire: Connect to the telephone muting lead for hands-free calling.
- Purple (black stripe) wire: This is the remote lead, typically used for connecting to a JVC amplifier.
- Signal cord: Used for connecting rear speakers or a subwoofer. Make the <L/O MODE> setting accordingly (refer to the main INSTRUCTIONS manual, page 11).
Wire Joining and Harnesses
To join wires:
- Strip the ends of the leads.
- Twist the ends together securely.
- Solder the connection for reliability.
- Cover the connection with vinyl tape or electrical tape.
If your vehicle's factory wiring harness is not compatible, you may need a vehicle-specific wiring harness adapter. These can be obtained from companies like Metra Electronics (www.metraonline.com) or Scosche Industries (www.scosche.com).
Connecting External Devices
Bluetooth Adapter or Portable Audio Player:
- The JVC KS-BTA100 Bluetooth adapter (sold separately) can be connected for Bluetooth functionality.
- A portable audio player can be connected using a 3.5 mm (1/8") stereo mini plug to the unit's AUX input.
Ensure the appropriate source selection (<SRC SELECT>) is made in the unit's settings (refer to the main INSTRUCTIONS manual, pages 9, 12, and 14).
Troubleshooting
Here are solutions for common issues:
- Problem: The fuse blows.
Solution: Are the red and black leads connected correctly? - Problem: Power cannot be turned on.
Solution: Is the yellow lead connected to a 12V source? Is the red lead connected to the ignition switch or a fused accessory circuit? - Problem: No sound from the speakers.
Solution: Check if the speaker output leads are short-circuited. Ensure speaker wires are correctly connected to the speakers. - Problem: "MISWIRING CHK WIRING THEN RESET UNIT" or "WARNING CHK WIRING THEN RESET UNIT" appears on the display, and no operation is possible.
Solution: Check if any speaker output lead is short-circuited or touching the car chassis or head unit chassis. Reset the unit. - Problem: Sound is distorted.
Solution: Check if the speaker output leads are grounded. Ensure the negative terminals ("-") of left and right speakers are not commonly grounded if not intended. - Problem: Noise interferes with sounds.
Solution: Ensure the rear ground terminal is connected to the car's chassis using a short and thick cord. - Problem: This unit becomes hot.
Solution: This is normal if the unit is operating under heavy load or in high ambient temperatures. Ensure speaker output leads are not grounded and negative terminals are not commonly grounded. - Problem: This unit does not work at all.
Solution: Reset the unit.
