Cookware | Microwave Safe | Grill/Convection | Comment |
---|---|---|---|
Aluminium foil Foil Containers | ✔/X | ✔ | Small pieces can shield food from overheating. Keep foil at least 2cm from walls to prevent arcing. Containers not recommended unless specified by manufacturer. |
Browning dishes | ✔/X | X | Follow manufacturer instructions. Do not exceed heating times. Be careful, these dishes get very hot. |
China and ceramics | ✔/X | X | Usually suitable, except with metallic decoration. |
Glassware e.g. Pyrex® | ✔ | ✔ | Care needed with fine glassware; can break/crack if heated suddenly. |
Metal | X | ✔ | Not recommended; will arc and can lead to fire. |
Plastic/Polystyrene e.g fast food containers | ✔ | X | Some containers may warp, melt, or discolour at high temperatures. |
Cling film | ✔ | X | Do not touch food; must be pierced to let steam escape. |
Freezer/Roasting bags | ✔ | X | Must be pierced to let steam escape. Ensure bags are microwave-safe. |
Paper - Plates, cups and kitchen paper | ✔ | X | Do not use plastic or metal ties; they may melt or catch fire due to arcing. |
Straw and wooden Containers | ✔ | X | Use only for warming or absorbing moisture. Overheating may cause fire. |
Recycled paper and newspaper | ✔ | X | Always attend oven; overheating may cause fire. May contain metal extracts causing arcing. |
WARNING: When heating food in plastic or paper containers, monitor the oven due to the possibility of ignition.
NOTE: Do not leave your oven unattended while in use.
Microwaves cook faster; follow techniques for good results.
WARNING: Liquids and foods must not be heated in sealed containers or jars/containers with lids on, as pressure will build up inside and may cause the jar/container to explode.
Cooking Advice Notes:
WARNING: Follow SHARP operation manual instructions. Exceeding recommended times/power levels can cause overheating, burning, fire, and oven damage.
Arrange: Place thickest parts of food towards the outside of the dish for more even cooking.
Cover: Use vented microwave cling film or a suitable lid for certain foods.
Pierce: Foods with a shell, skin, or membrane must be pierced to prevent steam build-up and explosion (e.g., potatoes, fish, chicken, sausages).
NOTE: Eggs should not be heated using microwave power as they may explode, even after cooking (e.g., poached, fried, hard-boiled).
Stir, turn and rearrange: Essential for even cooking. Stir from outside towards the centre.
Stand: Standing time after cooking allows heat to disperse evenly.
Food Characteristics | Description |
---|---|
Composition | Foods high in fat or sugar require less heating time. Bones conduct heat, cooking food faster. Care needed for even cooking. |
Density | Light porous foods (cakes, bread) cook faster than heavy, dense foods (roasts, casseroles). |
Quantity | Cooking time must increase with the amount of food. (e.g., four potatoes take longer than two). |
Size | Small foods/pieces cook faster as microwaves penetrate from all sides. Make pieces the same size for even cooking. |
Shape | Irregular shapes (chicken breasts) take longer in thicker parts. Place thickest parts to the outside for more energy. Round shapes cook more evenly than square shapes. |
Temperature of food | Chilled foods take longer to cook than room temperature food. Container temperature is not a true indicator of food/drink temperature. Cut into foods with fillings to release heat/steam. |
WARNING: Face & Hands: Always use oven gloves. Stand back when opening the door. Direct steam away from face and hands when removing covers.
WARNING: Check food/drink temperature before serving. Take special care for babies, children, or the elderly. Stir/shake contents of feeding bottles/jars and check temperature to avoid burns.
Microwave defrosting is quick but requires care for thorough results.
Rearrange: Foods towards the outside defrost quicker. Rearrange up to 4 times, moving packed pieces from outside to centre for even defrosting.
Separate: Separate foods stuck together as soon as possible (e.g., bacon rashers, chicken fillets).
Shield: Shield areas becoming warm with small foil pieces to prevent cooking (e.g., legs/wings on chicken).
Stand: Standing time is necessary for thorough defrosting. Food must stand, covered, after removal to ensure the centre is defrosted.
Turn over: Essential to turn food over up to 4 times during defrosting for even results.
Follow guidelines for thorough reheating before serving.
Plated meals: Reheat poultry/meat portions separately. Place smaller items in the centre, larger/thicker foods at the edge. Cover with vented cling film, reheat on 50P, stir/rearrange halfway. Ensure food is thoroughly reheated.
Sliced meat: Cover with vented cling film, reheat on 50P. Rearrange at least once. Ensure thoroughly reheated.
Poultry portions: Place thickest parts to the outside, cover with vented cling film, reheat on 70P. Turn over halfway. Ensure thoroughly reheated.
Casseroles: Cover with vented cling film or lid, reheat on 50P. Stir frequently. Ensure thoroughly reheated.
For best results, select a suitable power level (e.g., vegetables at 100P, lasagne at 50P).
Notes:
WARNING: Never heat liquids in narrow-necked containers; contents may erupt and cause burns.
WARNING: Stir/shake contents of feeding bottles/baby food jars and check temperature before consumption to avoid burns.
Perform simple checks before calling for service.
Basic Check: Place half a cup of water in the oven, cook for 1 minute at 100P microwave. Check if lamp works, cooling fan works, audible signal sounds, and water is hot. Then, cook with grill for 3 minutes. Check if grill element turns red.
If issues persist, check plug, fuse, and circuit breaker. If all okay, consult the chart.
WARNING: Never adjust, repair, or modify the oven yourself. This is hazardous and may involve removing covers protecting against microwave energy.

Draught circulates around the door. | Air circulates within the cavity; the door seal is not airtight. |
Condensation forms in the oven, and may drip from the door. | Steam from food condenses on the colder cavity surface. Amount depends on food moisture content. Condensation in door glass should clear. |
Flashing or arcing from within the cavity when cooking. | Occurs with metallic objects near the cavity. May roughen the cavity surface but does not damage the oven. |
Arcing potatoes. | Ensure "eyes" are removed and potatoes are pierced. Place directly on flat-bed or in a heat-resistant dish. |
The display is lit but the control panel will not work when pressed. | Check the door is closed properly. |
Oven cooks too slowly. | Ensure correct power level has been selected. |
Oven makes a noise. | Microwave energy pulses ON and OFF during cooking/defrosting. |
