Getting Started

This section will guide you through basic preparations before the first use with your Rider 17.

Initial Setup

  1. Download the Bryton Active app on your phone.
  2. Turn on your Rider 17.
  3. After logging into the app, add the Rider 17 to your account.
  4. Set up your profile, preference settings, and data page grid via the app before your first ride.

Rider 17 Key Functions

The Rider 17 has three primary buttons:

Reboot Rider: Press the Power/Return/Lap/Menu, OK/Start/Pause/Stop Recording, and Page/Backlight buttons simultaneously to reboot the device.

Accessories: The Rider 17 E SKU includes the following accessories: Bike Mount, Safety Lanyard.

Status Icons and Heading

The device displays various status icons:

Icon/Category Description
?️ GPS Signal (Weak/Strong/No Signal) Indicates the strength of the GPS signal.
? Phone Connected Indicates if a smartphone is connected via Bluetooth.
? LIVE TRACK Indicates the status of the Live Track feature.
? Battery Status Shows the remaining battery level.
▶️ Recording / Pause Indicates if the device is recording or paused.
? Radar Connected Indicates if a radar accessory is connected.
❤️ Heart Rate Displays current heart rate if a sensor is paired.
⚙️ Setting Indicates the device is in settings mode.
? Speed Displays current speed.
?️ Temperature Displays current temperature.
? Heading Indicates the direction of travel.
? ODO (Odometer) Displays total accumulated distance.
⏱️ TRIP (Trip Time) Displays the duration of the current ride.
⬆️ Alt. Gain Displays accumulated altitude gain.
⬇️ Alt. Loss Displays accumulated altitude loss.
? LAP (Lap Summary) Displays lap-specific data.
⚙️ Setting Indicates the device is in settings mode.
? Cadence Displays current pedaling cadence if a sensor is paired.
↔️ Distance Displays current distance.
? Gradient Displays the gradient of the current terrain.
➡️ Direction Indicates the current heading.

Heading Description: The illuminated English letters represent the direction ahead: S (South), N (North), E (East), W (West).

Basic Operations

Step 1: Charge your Rider 17

Charge the Rider 17 for at least 4 hours. Unplug the device when fully charged. The battery frame flashes when the battery is low. Keep the device plugged in until properly charged. The suitable charging temperature is 0°C ~ 40°C. Charging will terminate outside this range.

Step 2: Turn On Rider 17

Press the Power/Return/Lap/Menu button [⌂] to turn on the device.

Step 3: Select Unit

Press the Page/Backlight button [➡️] to select Unit. Press the OK/Start/Pause/Stop Recording button [OK] to confirm.

Step 4: Acquire Satellite Signals

Once turned on, the Rider 17 will automatically search for satellite signals (30-60 seconds). A GPS signal icon [?️] appears when GPS is fixed. If not fixed, a [❓] icon appears. Avoid obstructed environments for better reception.

Step 5: Ride with Rider 17

Start Recording: Press the OK/Start/Pause/Stop Recording button [OK] to start recording.

Pause Recording: While recording, press the OK/Start/Pause/Stop Recording button [OK] to pause.

Stop and Save Recording: Long press the OK/Start/Pause/Stop Recording button [OK] for 3 seconds to stop and save the recording.

Step 6: Share Your Records

Auto Sync with 3rd Party Platforms: Sync activities to platforms like Komoot, Strava, RideWithGPS, Relive, or TrainingPeaks via the Bryton Active App.

Enable Auto Sync:

  1. Open Bryton Active App, go to the "Profile" tab.
  2. Select "3rd Party Account Link".
  3. Choose a platform (e.g., "Strava") and enable auto sync.
  4. Log in to your account on the chosen platform or create one.
  5. Select "Allow" or "Authorize" to grant access.

Auto Sync and Firmware Updates

Auto Sync Tracks to Bryton Active App

No manual uploading is needed. The Bryton Active App automatically syncs tracks after pairing with your Rider 17 via BLE.

Sync via BLE:

  1. Scan the QR code or search for "Bryton Active App" in your app store to download and log in/create an account.
  2. In the app, go to Settings > My Device > Device Manager > [+] and select Rider 17 to add your device.
  3. Confirm the device UUID matches.
  4. Turn on "Activity Auto Sync" to automatically upload new tracks.

Note: Use the same account for Bryton Active App and Brytonactive.com.

Firmware Update via Active App

Bryton regularly releases firmware updates for new features and bug fixes. It is recommended to update your firmware.

Update Process:

  1. Connect your Rider 17 to your phone via Bluetooth.
  2. In the Bryton Active App, select "Firmware Update" to start the process. An update message will appear automatically if new firmware is available.

LIVE TRACK Feature

Share your real-time location with friends and family using the Live Track feature. This feature requires the device to be recording a ride.

Activate LIVE TRACK

In the Bryton Active app, select "Course" then "LIVE TRACK". Toggle "Share Location" status or press the "Start Live Track" button. A LIVE TRACK icon [?] will appear on the Rider 17.

Auto Send LIVE TRACK Link

Enable "Auto Send" to automatically send the Live Track sharing session link via email to designated contacts. You can add a custom message.

Manually Share LIVE TRACK Link

Press the [Share] icon [➡️] in the bottom left-hand corner of the app to select contacts to share with.

24-Hour Auto Extension

This option keeps the Live Track link valid for 24 hours after the ride ends, allowing continued tracking for multi-day trips or commutes.

End LIVE TRACK

When you end your ride, the Live Track icon will disappear. You can also end Live Track from the Bryton Active app.

Settings

When not recording, press the Menu button [≡] to enter settings.

1. Select Bike Profile

You can customize 2 bike profiles. Press [➡️] to select Bike1 or Bike2, and press [OK] to confirm. Bike information will be stored for easier rides.

2. Calibrate Altitude

Calibrate altitude for your current location. Press [➡️] to adjust the value and [OK] to adjust the next value. Press [OK] again to confirm. The altitude value will update on the meter mode. The first value can be set as "-" or "0".

3. Pair Sensors

To pair sensors (Heart Rate Monitor, Cadence Sensor, Speed Sensor, Combo Sensor, Radar), ensure Bryton Smart Sensors are installed and awake. Wear the heart rate monitor or rotate the crank/wheel to wake sensors.

Wheel Size: When pairing a speed sensor or for accurate distance calculation, you may need to input the wheel size. Press [➡️] to adjust numbers and [OK] to confirm and move to the next digit.

4. Daylight Saving Time

Set Daylight Saving Time. Press [➡️] to adjust values and [OK] to confirm. The first value can be "-" or "0"; the last two can be "30" or "00".

5. ODO (Odometer)

Adjust the total mileage on the odometer setting. Press [➡️] to adjust values and [OK] to confirm.

6. Factory Reset

Reset your device to factory settings. Press [➡️] to select Yes or No, and press [OK] to confirm.

Manage Sensors via Bryton Active App

Use the Bryton Active App to manage your connected sensors.

Steps:

  1. Select Settings on the home page.
  2. Select Bike Settings > Sensors.
  3. Select the sensor type.

Add New Sensors

  1. Select "Add SENSORS".
  2. Ensure sensors are installed and awake. For Bike Radars, turn on power before pairing.
  3. The device will detect sensors automatically, or you can enter the sensor ID manually.
  4. Pick a detected sensor and select "OK" to save.

Manage Sensors

  1. Select the sensor to edit.
  2. Toggle the status to activate or deactivate.
  3. Press "Delete" to remove a sensor.
  4. Use "Replace Sensor" to switch to a different sensor of the same type.

Manage Bike Radar

Turn the bike radar status on or off. Toggle "Sound" for alert tones and "Threat Cleared Tone" for clear tone alerts. Press "Delete" to remove the radar. Use "Replace Sensor" to switch.

Bike Radar Information

The Gardia radar's status and vehicle information are displayed on the screen. The vehicle's position moves up the screen as it approaches.

Bryton App Settings

After pairing your Rider 17 with the Bryton Active App, you can configure settings and receive notifications.

General Setting

Notifications

Receive phone calls, texts, and email notifications on your Rider 17 after pairing your smartphone via Bluetooth.

iOS Phone Pairing

  1. On your phone, go to "Settings > Bluetooth" and enable Bluetooth.
  2. In the Bryton Active App, tap "Settings > Device Manager > +".
  3. Select and add your device by pressing "+".
  4. Tap "Pair" to pair with your phone.
  5. Tap "Finish" to complete pairing.

Note: If notifications don't work, check your phone's "Settings > Notifications" to ensure they are allowed for compatible apps.

Android Phone Pairing

  1. On your phone, go to "Settings > Bluetooth" and enable Bluetooth.
  2. In the Bryton Mobile App, tap "Settings > My Devices > Device Manager > +".
  3. Select and add your device by pressing "+".
  4. Tap "Finish" to complete pairing.

Allow Notification Access

  1. Tap "Settings > Notification".
  2. Tap "OK" to allow Notification Access for the Bryton app.
  3. Tap "Active" and select "OK".
  4. Go back to Notification settings and enable "In-coming Calls", "Text Messages", and "Emails".

Profile Settings

Edit your profile information via the Bryton Active App. Your profile will sync to your Rider 17.

About Me

In the "Profile" tab, select "About Me" to browse and personalize your information.

Heart Rate Zone

Select PROFILE > Heart Rate Zone to edit details. Customize Heart Rate Zones by selecting MHR/LTHR and editing zone details. Note: Rider 17 does not support Power meter data.

Install Rider 17

Mount Rider 17:

  1. Attach the mount to the handlebar.
  2. Secure the mount with the strap.
  3. Attach the device to the mount.
  4. Ensure the device is securely locked.

Wheel Size and Circumference

The wheel size is marked on both sides of the tires. Below is a table of common wheel sizes and their corresponding circumference (L in mm).

Data Field Descriptions

The Rider 17 supports various data fields categorized as follows:

Category Data Field Description
Altitude Altitude The height of your current location above or below sea level.
Gradient The calculation of altitude over distance.
Alt. Gain The total altitude distance gained during this current activity.
Alt. Loss The total altitude lost during this current activity.
Distance Distance The distance traveled for current activity.
ODO The accumulated total distance until you reset it.
LapDistance The distance traveled for the current lap.
Speed Speed The current rate of change in distance.
Avg Speed The average speed for current activity.
Max Speed The maximum speed for current activity.
Lap Speed The average speed for the current lap.
Cadence Cadence The current rate at which rider is pedalling the pedals.
Avg CAD The average cadence for current activity.
Max CAD The maximum cadence for current activity.
Heart Rate Heart Rate The number of times your heart beats per minute. Requires compatible HR sensor pairing.
Avg HR The average heart rate for current activity.
Max HR The maximum heart rate for current activity.
Time Time Current GPS Time.
Ride Time The time spent on riding for current activity.
Trip Time Total time spent for current activity.
LapTime The stopwatch time for the current lap.
Heading Direction Heading function informs you which direction you are currently heading.
Temperature Temperature The current temperature.

Basic Care and Compliance

Basic Care For Your Rider 17

Taking good care of your device will reduce the risk of damage:

  1. Do not drop your device or subject it to severe shock.
  2. Do not expose your device to extreme temperatures and excessive moisture.
  3. The screen surface can be scratched; use non-adhesive screen protectors.
  4. Use diluted neutral detergent on a soft cloth to clean your device.
  5. Do not attempt to disassemble, repair, or modify the device, as this will invalidate the warranty.

RF Exposure Information (MPE)

This device meets EU requirements and ICNIRP limitations for public exposure to electromagnetic fields. Operate at a minimum of 20 cm separation distance from the user.
