Configuration and Remote Operation
A control application for Windows OS is available for download from the Marshall-USA website at: http://www.marshall-usa.com/software/VMV-402-SH-V4_4.zip. This application facilitates firmware updates, setup, configuration, and remote operation via USB or Ethernet.
9.1 Installing the Application
- Download the VMV-402 update file from the Marshall-USA website and unzip it.
- Uninstall any previous versions of the VMV-204-SH Control App.
- Connect a USB Type-A to USB Mini cable between your computer and the switcher.
- Double-click the unzipped file to start the installation. Ensure the "Create a Desktop Icon" option is checked.
9.2 Updating the Firmware
It is recommended to update the firmware before initial use.
- Launch the Control App from the desktop icon.
- The Port Setting page will appear. Select "RS-232 over USB" and ensure a COM Port is available. If not, check the USB connection and restart the app. Select the appropriate COM Port.
- Click the "Connect" button.
- On the Main page, click the "Settings" button.
- Navigate to the "Utilities" tab and click "Firmware Update".
- On the Update page, confirm the "Update Version" is current. Click "Update" to begin.
- The VMV-402-SH will restart multiple times during the update. Allow at least 3 minutes after the process completes before using the device.
- If prompted, select "NO" to the question about setting the Ethernet configuration. Close and restart the Control App.
9.3 Setting Up the VMV-402-SH for the First Time
Initial setup is best performed using the USB connection and the control application. This method is recommended before attempting an Ethernet connection.
9.4 Most Common Settings
The most critical setting is the system output video format and frame rate. Access this via the "Settings" menu.
9.5 Select the Outputs Tab
In the "Settings" menu, click the "Outputs" tab. Use the "Output Resolution" pulldown window to select the desired output format and frame rate. All incoming video sources will be converted to this selected format. Note: When a UHD format is selected, it applies only to the HDMI output; the SDI output will remain at 1080p at the same frame rate.
9.6 Other Settings on this Page
- Vertical Flip: Turns the picture upside down.
- Mirror: Reverses the picture left to right. These settings affect the entire output frame, including Quad mode.
- Video Shift: Allows adjustment of the output image position Up/Down and Left/Right. Horizontal position can be shifted in 200 increments (100 is default center), and vertical position in 100 increments (50 is default center). Click "Default" to reset positions.
- Brightness, Saturation, and Contrast: Adjust video settings for optimal display matching. These settings affect the entire output image, including Quad Mode. Click "Default" to reset these parameters.
9.7 Quad Mode Settings
Clicking the "Labels" tab provides access to Quad Mode settings. The icons at the top represent the 6 available Quad Mode patterns. Click an icon to change the pattern.
Each window in Quad Mode can have an independent label. Labels can be up to 14 characters (including numbers and symbols) and positioned in one of six locations within the window. Type over the existing label and click "Apply" to set a new label.
To disable labels, use the "Label: On/Off" buttons at the bottom of the page.
9.8 Using an Ethernet Connection with the Default Address
The VMV-402-SH can be configured with a Static IP address or use DHCP for automatic assignment. For DHCP mode, it's recommended to first connect via USB or a Static Ethernet connection so the control app learns the unit's MAC address.
The unit ships with a default Static IP address of 192.168.1.110. If this address is not in use on your network, you can connect directly and access it via the control application. From the "Utilities" tab, select "Port Setting", then "TCP/IP", confirm the default address is displayed, and click "Connect".
9.9 Establishing a New Static IP Address
To change the Static IP address, go to the "Utilities" tab, select "IP Setting", and enter the new IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway. Ensure "DHCP Enable" is unchecked, then click "Apply". The VMV-402-SH will restart. Close and restart the control app, wait a minute, then connect using the new address. The new address will need to be manually entered in the "Port Setting" window. Note: The Factory Reset function does not alter the IP address.
9.10 Setting DHCP Mode
To enable DHCP mode, follow the same procedure as setting a Static address, but check the "DHCP Enable" box before clicking "Apply". The VMV-402-SH will restart. Close and restart the control app. On the "Port Setting" page, change "Port Selection" to "DHCP" and click "Connect". The IP address displayed in this window may not reflect the actual active address when using DHCP.
9.11 Using 3rd Party Controllers
The VMV-402-SH can be controlled remotely via Ethernet, USB, or IR. Control codes and operational tips are available on the Marshall-USA.com website at: http://www.marshall-usa.com/pdf/VMV-402-Remote-Control-Protocol.pdf
