Getting Started

Your Home Network

Wi-Fi audio involves streaming music throughout your home network by connecting multiple speakers and devices. The Polk Omni App serves as the controller for the Polk Omni Collection, sending music information to each DTS Play-Fi enabled speaker or device.

System Requirements

  • A wireless network connected to the internet with an 802.11g router or better.
  • An Android device with version 2.2 operating system or newer, OR an iOS device with version 6.0 operating system or newer.
  • Your wireless network password (if required).

For the Best DTS Play-Fi Experience

  • For optimal streaming performance, especially with multiple speakers, an 802.11n router or better is recommended.
  • Ensure the DTS Play-Fi device is within wireless reach of your router and that the signal is not obstructed by dense materials like concrete or brick. The Polk Omni App displays the Wireless Strength icon to indicate connection quality.

S2 Buttons and Controls

On/Off: Plug in the power cord; the S2 powers on.

Play/Pause Button: The button featuring the Polk logo.

Status Indicator: Two LEDs on the front, flanking the Play/Pause button. The left indicator shows AUX status, and the right shows Wi-Fi status. Refer to the "LED status explanation" for details.

Volume Up/Down: Use the [Volume Up] and [Volume Down] buttons to adjust the volume.

AC Power Input: Use the supplied power brick for connection to a power outlet (100-240V, 50/60 Hz). Using a third-party power supply will void your warranty. Ensure the power cord connector is firmly inserted into the S2 until it sits flush.

Connecting Your S2

Wi-Fi Setup

  1. Place your S2 near your internet-connected wireless router for the easiest setup. You can move it anywhere after setup is complete.
  2. Connect the included power cable to the S2 and a power outlet. The device will power on automatically.
  3. The white light on the back will blink quickly for about 20 seconds, then begin to pulse slowly.
  4. A slowly pulsing light indicates the device is ready to connect to your Wi-Fi network. If the Wi-Fi LED is not pulsing slowly, press and hold the Wi-Fi setup button for 8 seconds until you hear the second tone.
  5. Download the Polk Omni App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  6. Launch the app and follow the on-screen instructions.

When your device is connected to the network, the Wi-Fi light will change from blinking to a solid white. You are now connected and can rename your device or proceed to enjoy music.

Note on WPS: To enable Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) with a compatible router, press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the S2 for 4 seconds or until the first beep. Then, press the WPS button on your wireless router. The S2 will connect automatically without requiring a password.

Wired Ethernet Connection

While Polk Omni Collection products do not have a dedicated Ethernet port, a USB port can be used with an Ethernet adapter for a USB cable to connect your products directly to your router, offering a faster transfer rate than wireless.

Polk Omni Utility App

For extended functionality, including product firmware updates, source selection, and EQ settings, download the free Polk Omni App from the App Store or Google Play Store. This app is not required for daily music streaming.

Downloading the DTS Play-Fi PC App

Visit https://Play-Fi.com/windows/polk to download the free version. Once installed, the DTS Play-Fi logo will appear in your Task Manager. Click the DTS Play-Fi driver and then select any zone to begin controlling.

For multi-zone control capabilities, contact Polk Preferred Services at 1-800-638-7276 to inquire about upgrading to the Premium Play-PC driver.

Playing Music

Working with NAS Drives, PCs, and Mac Devices

The Polk Omni App can recognize Media Servers or NAS drives broadcasting over your home network and configured for open access via the DLNA protocol. The DTS Play-Fi Windows app allows Polk Omni Collection products to play any file playable by the Windows operating system, including all music services. For OSX devices, which do not support DLNA natively, third-party software like Twonky, Plex, or Servio must be downloaded to make them visible to the network. Once installed, locally stored content on OSX devices will appear in the Polk Omni App under "Media Server."

How to Play Music

Open the Polk Omni app to begin playing music. Select your preferred music source, then choose the device(s) you wish to play music on. Click "Next" to proceed and select the music you want to play.

Music Choices

  • Your Personal Music Library: Play music stored on your phone, tablet, or computer through your Polk Omni products throughout your home.
  • Internet Radio: Enjoy free radio stations from around the world across various genres. Access over 37,000 stations, including popular brands like Disney, BBC, NPR, Fox News Radio, and Wall Street Journal Radio.
  • Online Music Services: Stream popular online music services such as Pandora and Songza. For an updated list of supported services, visit www.polkaudio.com. Services like KKBox, QQMusic, and Deezer are available internationally in select countries.

Adding Speakers and Creating Pairs

Adding Another Speaker or Component

Adding to your Polk Omni Collection is straightforward. The Omni Collection simplifies creating a whole-house wireless music system. Add more S2 speakers, a sound bar, an amplifier, or an adapter to an existing audio system. The Omni App and your home network manage the rest.

  • From the Omni App home page, select "Settings."
  • In the "Settings" screen, choose "Add DTS Play-Fi Device."
  • Follow the app's instructions to add the device to your list.

Maximum Rooms/Zones Supported

The system supports up to eight separate wireless source devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.), each with its own source, simultaneously. Any wireless source device can stream to up to eight playback devices. Due to wireless network bandwidth limitations, it is not recommended to exceed 16 wireless DTS Play-Fi products on the Wi-Fi network at any given time. With hard-wired Ethernet connections, up to 256 devices can be theoretically supported. For more information, contact Polk Preferred Services at 1-800-638-7276.

Creating a Stereo Pair

Pairing two Polk Omni Wireless speakers creates a stereo pair for a more dynamic audio experience. Ensure both speakers are in the same room for setup:

  1. From your list of devices, go to the upper right-hand corner and select the three dots [Menu].
  2. From the drop-down menu, select "Stereo Setup."
  3. Press "Select a Stereo Pair."
  4. Choose the LEFT speaker from your list.
  5. Next, choose the RIGHT speaker.
  6. Name the Stereo Pair.
  7. The name of the Stereo Pair will appear on the "Create a Stereo Pair" screen.
  8. Setup is complete. Enjoy your stereo sound!

Primary vs. Secondary Speakers

Within the Polk Omni app, devices are grouped into primary and secondary zones for music playback. DTS Play-Fi requires a primary speaker to initiate a listening session or zone, ensuring synchronization down to one millisecond to eliminate sound echo. It is recommended to select the DTS Play-Fi enabled product with the strongest signal strength as your primary device. Secondary speakers connect to the primary speaker; disabling the primary speaker will temporarily disable secondary speakers until a primary speaker is reselected.

Dual-Band Capabilities

Polk Omni Collection products support dual-band Wi-Fi. The standard 2.4 GHz band can be congested, especially in areas with many wireless signals. The Omni Collection can utilize the 5 GHz band in these instances for better performance.

DTS Play-Fi Accepted File Formats

  • mp3 (MPEG Layer III)
  • m4a and aac (Advanced Audio Coding)
  • flac (Free Lossless Audio Codec)
  • wav (Waveform Audio File)

File Quality

  • Supports lossless file reproduction up to 16-bit/48kHz (CD Quality).
  • Handles all high-resolution music files up to 24bit/192k.
  • Plays all format bitrates [kbps]. DTS Play-Fi transmits high-resolution files but may down-sample them for distribution throughout a home network.

Optional S2 Grille

The Omni S2 includes an additional white grille that can be swapped with the black grille to match your decor. Swapping the grilles is simple: pull the existing grille off the speaker. Note that the grille seats snugly, so firm pressure may be required.

Directions to Swap Grilles

  1. Work your fingers under the middle of the grille while holding the speaker horizontally.
  2. Do not use sharp or pointed objects to remove the grille.
  3. Continue to work your fingers under the middle until you have a proper grip.
  4. Pull the grille away from the speaker.
  5. Replace with the alternative grille by aligning connectors with the plug holes on the speaker baffle.
  6. Push on the edges of the grille until a tight connection is achieved.

Software Updates

To improve performance and functionality, software updates may be required periodically. Registering your Polk product during setup is highly encouraged for receiving these updates. Access update instructions via the "Preferred Services" section on the app's home page.

Basic Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting resources are available under "Settings" on the Omni App home page, linking to the DTS Play-Fi Knowledge Base at https://Play-Fi.com/faq?/support. Router or network performance issues are common causes of problems. For further assistance, contact Polk Preferred Services at 1-800-638-7276.

Important Note: Router speeds and ranges are typically listed under ideal operating conditions. A router's signal can be affected by walls and their construction materials.
