Preparation
Depending on the method of powering the unit, follow one of the two instructions for power supply below. The PSS-F30 does not include power accessories (except for the USB cable), so you must purchase them separately as needed.
Using a USB AC Adapter or Mobile Battery, etc.
- Connect the supplied USB cable and a commercially available USB AC adapter (or mobile battery) in the order shown in the illustration.
- Connect the USB cable to the 5V DC (USB Micro-B) port on the back of the instrument.
- Connect the USB AC adapter to a power outlet.
Caution: When disconnecting the USB cable or other components, turn off the power first, then proceed in the reverse order of connection.
Requirements for USB AC Adapter / Mobile Battery
- Output Voltage: 4.8 V to 5.2 V
- Output Current: 0.5 A or more
Caution: Be sure to use a USB AC adapter or mobile battery with the above specifications. Using an incorrect USB AC adapter may cause the instrument to malfunction or overheat. Read the safety precautions for the specific USB AC adapter or mobile battery.
Notification: Some portable USB batteries automatically stop supplying power when connected to a low-power device like this instrument. Use a portable USB battery that has a low-power mode function, etc., and can supply power to devices with a current consumption of up to 40 mA.
Connecting Headphones and External Audio Devices
PHONES/OUTPUT Jack
For connecting stereo headphones via a mini stereo plug. This jack also serves as an external output for sending the instrument's audio signal to external audio equipment. When headphones or similar are plugged into this jack, the instrument's speakers are automatically turned off.
Caution:
- Using the instrument or headphones for extended periods at a very high, uncomfortable volume level may cause permanent hearing damage.
- Before connecting the instrument to other electronic devices, remember to set their volume levels to minimum, and then disconnect them from the power supply. Failure to do so may result in damage to the devices or electric shock.
Notification: To prevent possible damage to external devices, turn on the power of the instrument first, and then turn on the power of the external device. Turn off the power in the reverse order: first turn off the external device, then the instrument.
Using Batteries
The instrument requires four AA-size alkaline (LR6) or manganese (R6) batteries, or nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries. Alkaline or Ni-MH rechargeable batteries are recommended, as other battery types may have shorter performance.
Warning: For more information, refer to the "Batteries" section in the "Precautions" chapter (page 4).
- Ensure the instrument's power switch is set to OFF.
- Open the battery compartment cover, located on the bottom of the instrument.
- Insert four new batteries, ensuring that the poles are aligned correctly with the markings inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
Notification:
- Make sure you select the correct battery type (page 10). Selecting the wrong battery type may shorten their life.
- Connecting or disconnecting the USB cable while batteries are installed may cause the power to turn off, resulting in data loss.
Powering On / Standby
Press the [Standby/On] switch to turn on the power; the display will light up. Press and hold the [Standby/On] switch for about one second to set the unit to standby mode.
Adjusting the Master Volume
This instrument has a volume limit function to prevent the master volume from being set to an excessively high level. For more information, see "Volume Limit" on page 10.
Use the MASTER VOLUME buttons.
The volume range is 00–15 (default is 13).
Note: The volume setting will be reset to the default value of 13 after the "Initialization" (page 11) is performed.
Selecting and Playing Voices, Songs, or Styles
Voices
Voices are the core of the PSS-F30, allowing you to play with realistic sounds of 120 instruments. To select and play a voice, refer to steps 1, 2, and 3!
The OTS (One Touch Setting) function (Voice 000). When this function is activated and a style or song is selected, the instrument automatically selects the optimal voice for playing the melody part. To turn off this function, select another voice.
Use the buttons below to match the voice to the music you want to play!
- OCTAVE: Shifts the octave of the sound up or down.
- PIANO/DRUM KIT: Pressing this button switches between Voice 001 (Piano) and Voice 090 (Drum Kit). The Drum Kit voice allows you to play individual drum sounds assigned to specific keys.
For information on how the note layout relates to the keyboard, see page 16.
Songs
Songs are provided to demonstrate the instrument's capabilities. These are 30 specially recorded compositions that can be played for enjoyment or practice. To select and play a song, refer to steps 1, 2, and 3!
Starting playback of a song causes all songs to play in sequence until manually stopped.
Use the buttons below to control playback as needed:
- TEMPO/TAP: Calls up the tempo, allowing you to change settings using the numeric buttons or the [+/-] buttons when "TEMPO" or the current tempo value is displayed.
- MUTE: Mutes the right or left channel of the song, allowing you to play or practice the muted part yourself. Press this button repeatedly to select the part to be muted. If both parts are muted, play the right or left hand part.
- PAUSE/AUTO FILL: Pauses/resumes playback.
When practicing, you may need to shift the octave of the sound up or down. In such cases, use the OCTAVE buttons described in the Voices section above.
Styles
Styles enhance your performances of music in various genres, allowing you to play with the accompaniment of a professional band. To play with accompaniment, simply play chord root notes with your left hand.
To select and play a style, refer to steps 1, 2, and 3!
To start playing the style and accompaniment, press a key in the keyboard's accompaniment section when the rhythm part is playing.
Try playing chord root notes by playing chords with your left hand and the melody with your right.
To play the accompaniment by yourself, you need to know the chords, but the Smart Chord function can help you! Simply play the root note of the chord, and the appropriate chord will be played according to the key. For best results, set the key for the Smart Chord function (page 10).
If you know the chord fingerings and want to play full chords instead of just chord root notes, set the fingering type to "Multi" on page 10.
When playing styles, use the buttons below as needed:
- TEMPO/TAP: Calls up the tempo, allowing you to change settings using the numeric buttons or the [+/-] buttons when "TEMPO" or the current tempo value is displayed.
- MUTE: Mutes the accompaniment part, allowing you to play only the rhythm part. To restore the accompaniment, press this button again and press a key in the accompaniment section.
- PAUSE/AUTO FILL: Plays an interim phrase to add variety to the rhythm of your performance. Styles in the PIANIST category do not include an interim phrase section.
To exit style mode and use the full range of voices, select a song.
