Introduction

This document provides operating instructions for the Sony Blu-ray Disc™/ DVD Player, models BDP-S3700 and BDP-S1700.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose the unit to liquid spills. Do not place liquid-filled objects, such as vases, on the unit.

Do not open the chassis to avoid electric shock. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.

The power cord must be replaced only by a qualified service shop.

Do not expose batteries or the unit with batteries installed to excessive heat, such as sunshine or fire.

CAUTION: Risk of explosion if battery is replaced by an incorrect type.

Using optical instruments with this product may increase the risk of eye injury. The laser beam used in this Blu-ray Disc/DVD player is harmful to the eyes; do not attempt to disassemble the chassis.

This unit is classified as a CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT. The CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT marking is located on the rear exterior.

[Laser Warning Label Description]: Text indicating "CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT", "Visible and invisible laser radiation when open. Avoid direct eye exposure." in multiple languages.

Notes for users in the UK and Republic of Ireland: The provided plug complies with BS1363. If replacing the fuse, use a BS1362 approved fuse of the same rating. Ensure the fuse cover is replaced after fuse changes.

Disposal of Old Electrical and Electronic Equipment: This symbol on the product or packaging indicates it should not be treated as household waste. It must be handed over to a collection point for recycling of electrical and electronic equipment. Proper disposal helps prevent negative environmental and health consequences.

Precautions

For safety, performance, or data integrity reasons requiring a continuous connection with a built-in battery, it must be replaced by qualified service personnel only.

To ensure proper battery treatment, dispose of the product at a suitable collection point for electrical and electronic equipment at the end of its life.

For other batteries, refer to the section on safely removing batteries from the product and dispose of them at a suitable collection point.

First Steps

Remote Control

The functions of the remote control may differ depending on the disc or situation.

  • 1. Disc Tray Open/Close: Opens or closes the disc tray.
  • 2. TV Input Selector: Switches between TV and other input sources.
  • 3. TV Power: Turns the TV on or puts it into standby mode.
  • 4. Player Power: Turns the player on or puts it into standby mode.
  • 5. Color Buttons (Red/Green/Yellow/Blue): Shortcut buttons for interactive functions.
  • 6. TOP MENU: Opens or closes the main menu of a BD or DVD disc.
  • 7. POP UP/MENU: Opens or closes the pop-up menu of a BD-ROM or DVD disc.
  • 8. OPTIONS: Displays available on-screen options.
  • 9. RETURN: Returns to the previous screen.
  • 10. Navigation Buttons: Moves the selection cursor. Includes Up (↑), Down (↓), Left (←), Right (→), and ENTER (Center) buttons. The directional buttons have tactile dots for easier operation.
  • 11. HOME: Opens the player's Home screen.
  • 12. Favorite (♡): Accesses a registered favorite application.
  • 13. Playback Controls: Includes Rewind/Fast Forward (speed varies with presses), Play (▶), Pause (▶▶), Stop (■) (remembers resume point), Skip (previous/next chapter/track/file).
  • 14. Subtitle: Selects the subtitle language.
  • 15. TV Volume (+/-): Adjusts TV volume.
  • 16. Audio Mute: Temporarily mutes audio.
  • 17. Display: Shows playback information on the screen.
  • 18. Netflix: Accesses the "NETFLIX" online service.

Disc Tray Lock (Child Lock)

To prevent accidental opening, you can lock the disc tray. With the player on, press STOP (■), HOME, then TOP MENU on the remote control to lock or unlock the tray.

TV Remote Control Codes

To control your TV, press and hold the TV button and enter the manufacturer's code using the remote control buttons for 2 seconds. Try the following codes:

Step 1: Connecting the Player

Do not connect the power cord until all connections are made.

Connecting to a TV

Connect the player to your TV using a High-speed HDMI cable.

[Connection Diagram - TV]: Shows HDMI OUT from player to HDMI IN on TV, with "High-speed HDMI cable (not supplied)".

Connecting to an AV Receiver (Receiver)

Choose one of the following connection methods based on your AV receiver's input connectors.

[Connection Diagram A - HDMI to Receiver]: Shows HDMI OUT from player to HDMI IN on receiver using High-speed HDMI cable. Includes note: "Set [BD Audio MIX Setting] in [Audio Settings]".
[Connection Diagram B - HDMI and Digital Coaxial to Receiver]: Shows HDMI OUT from player to HDMI IN on receiver using High-speed HDMI cable, and DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL) from player to DIGITAL IN (COAXIAL) on receiver using Digital Coaxial cable (not supplied).

Step 2: Preparing for Network Connection

Wired Setup

Connect a LAN cable to the LAN (100) port on the player.

[Wired Network Setup Diagram]: Shows player LAN port connected via LAN cable to a router/ADSL modem/cable modem. Recommends shielded and straight-through LAN cable.

Wireless Setup (for BDP-S3700 only)

Use the built-in wireless LAN module.

[Wireless Network Setup Diagram]: Shows player connected wirelessly to a router/ADSL modem/cable modem.

Step 3: Easy Setup (Initial Setup)

When powering on for the first time, wait a moment before turning on and starting the player for [Easy Initial Settings].

  1. Insert two R03 (AAA size) batteries into the remote control, ensuring the polarity (+ and -) matches the markings in the battery compartment.
  2. [Battery Insertion Diagram]: Shows AAA batteries being inserted into the remote control.
  3. Connect the supplied AC adapter and power cord in the order shown. Disconnect in the reverse order.
  4. [AC Adapter Connection Diagram]: Shows AC adapter connected to player's DC IN 12V, then power cord connected to AC adapter and then to the wall outlet.

Turning on the Player

Press [Power] to turn on the player.

Displaying the Home Screen

Pressing HOME displays the Home screen. Select applications using the navigation buttons (↑, ↓, ←, →) and press ENTER.

[Home Screen Example]: Shows icons for Applications, Settings, My Apps, Featured Apps, All Apps.

[My Apps]: Manages your favorite applications. You can add shortcuts from [All Apps].

[Featured Apps]: Displays recommended applications.

[All Apps]: Shows all available applications. You can add applications to [My Apps] by pressing OPTIONS and selecting [Add to My Apps].

[Setup]: Adjusts player settings.

Screen mirroring function is available only for BDP-S3700.

Available Options

Pressing OPTIONS brings up various playback settings and functions. Available items vary by situation.

Playback

Playing a Disc

Refer to page 12 for "Discs That Can Be Played".

  1. Press [Eject/Close] (►) and insert a disc into the tray.
  2. [Disc Insertion Diagram]: Shows a disc being placed into the player tray, label side down.
  3. Press [Eject/Close] (►) to close the tray. Playback begins.

If playback does not start automatically, select the [Video], [Music], or [Photo] category under [Disc], then press ENTER.

For mixed discs, press OPTIONS on the remote and select [Data Contents] to view all available content.

BONUSVIEW/BD-LIVE Enjoyment

  1. Connect a USB memory device to the player's USB jack. Use a USB memory device of 1 GB or larger for local storage.
  2. Prepare for BD-LIVE (BD-LIVE only):
    • Connect the player to the network (see page 8).
    • Set [BD Internet Connection] in [BD/DVD Viewing Settings] to [Allow].
  3. Insert a BD-ROM disc with BONUSVIEW/BD-LIVE. The operation may vary depending on the disc. Refer to the instruction manual provided with the disc.

To delete data from the USB memory, select [Delete BD Data] in [BD/DVD Viewing Settings] and press ENTER. All data in the folder will be deleted.

Playing from a USB Device

Refer to page 13 for "File Types That Can Be Played".

  1. Connect a USB device to the player's USB jack.
  2. Select [USB device] using the navigation buttons (↑/↓/←/→) and press ENTER.
  3. Select the [Video], [Music], or [Photo] category using the navigation buttons (↑/↓), then press ENTER.

Playback via Network

Screen Mirroring (for BDP-S3700 only)

"Screen Mirroring" is a function to display the screen image of a mobile device on the TV screen using Miracast technology. The player can be connected directly to a Miracast-compatible device (e.g., smartphone, tablet). You can view the device's screen image on the large TV screen.

A wireless router (or access point) is not required for this function.

  1. Select [Screen mirroring] from the Home screen using the navigation buttons (←/→), then press ENTER.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Additional Information

Software Update

  1. Select [Setup] on the Home screen using the navigation buttons (↑/↓).
  2. Select [Software Update] using the navigation buttons, then press ENTER.

[Update via Internet]

Updates the player's software via the available network. Ensure the network is connected to the internet. For details, see "Step 2: Preparing for Network Connection" (page 8).

[Update via USB Memory]

Updates the player's software via USB memory. Ensure the software update folder is named "UPDATE" and all update files are stored in this folder. The player can recognize up to 500 files/folders at one level, including update files/folders.

*¹ As Blu-ray Disc specifications are new and evolving, some discs may not be playable depending on the type and version. Audio output varies depending on the source, connected output connector, and selected audio settings.

*² BD-RE: Version 2.1, BD-R: Versions 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, including BD-R discs with an organic pigment (LTH type). BD-R discs recorded on a computer may not be playable if they are post-script writable.

*³ A CD or DVD disc will not play if it has not been finalized properly. For more information, see the instruction manual provided with the recording device.

Region Code (for BD-ROM/DVD VIDEO discs only): The region code for your player is printed on the bottom of the unit. It will play only BD-ROM/DVD VIDEO discs marked with the same region code OR "ALL".

[Region Code Example]: Shows a player with "DVD BD X" and "Region Code X" markings.

The player does not play DRM-encoded files.

The player may recognize the following files or folders on BD, DVD discs, CDs, and USB devices: up to 9 folder levels, including the root folder; up to 500 files/folders at one level.

The player may recognize the following files or folders stored on a DLNA server (BDP-S3700 only): up to 19 folder levels; up to 999 files/folders at one level.

The player may support frame rates: up to 60 fps for AVCHD (MPEG4/AVC) only; up to 30 fps for other video codecs.

The player may support frame rates for video up to 40 Mbps.

Some USB devices may not function with the player.

The player may recognize Mass Storage Class (MSC) devices (like flash memory or hard drives), still image capture devices (SICD), and 101-key keyboards.

To prevent data corruption or damage to USB memory or devices, turn off the player when connecting or removing USB memory or devices.

The player may not play high bitrate video files smoothly from data CDs. It is recommended to play such files from data DVDs or BDs.
