Marantz MM9000 Power Amplifier User Guide
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Marantz MM9000 power amplifier for your sound system. Please take a few minutes to read this manual thoroughly before attempting connections and operation. The Marantz MM9000 is a Multi channel power amplifier designed for home theater and high quality audio systems.
Features
- The MM9000 is a five-channel power amplifier developed for use in hi-fi AV systems.
- It is a high-power amplifier with an all-discrete circuit configuration, rated at 170W per channel into 8-ohm loads.
- It is equipped with MARANTZ remote control capability, allowing its power to be controlled from a MARANTZ preamplifier or surround receiver (compatible products).
- The unit's power can be switched by remote control using a video signal or DC signal.
- The MM9000 features peak power indicators that show when the amplifier reaches maximum peak power, even for very short instants.
THX Ultra Certification
THX is an exclusive set of standards and technologies established by Lucasfilm Ltd. THX certification ensures that home theater components meet rigorous quality and performance tests, guaranteeing superb performance. Home THX Amplifiers are designed to ensure that noise, distortion, and frequency response errors are negligible, providing instantly available maximum power without instability or undesirable side effects. THX Ultra requirements cover all performance aspects, making the amplifier flexible, easy to use, sonically transparent, and reliable for both music and movies.
Names and Functions
The front panel of the Marantz MM9000 features the following controls and indicators:
- 1. POWER switch: Controls the power on/off state. Keep in the ON position for remote control operation.
- 2. STANDBY indicator: Lights up when the unit is in standby mode, activated by remote control or video signal input. In standby, power to internal circuits is cut to minimize heat and power consumption.
- 3. POWER indicator: Lights up when the unit is powered on and ready to output sound.
- 4. PEAK indicators: Light red momentarily when a channel's output power is clipped. If they light continuously, reduce the listening volume.
- 5. INPUT LEVEL control: Sets the amplifier's output level by adjusting its input level. For use in a THX system, this knob should be set to THX Ref. (Maximum position).
- 6. AUDIO INPUT jack: Connect the preamplifier output to this jack.
- 7. EXT. CONT IN jack: Used for external control. Connect to the video signal output of a video component for power control based on video signal presence. The unit enters STANDBY mode about 4 seconds after the video signal becomes absent and returns to POWER ON when the signal is reacquired. External control using a 5 to 13V DC signal is also possible.
- 8. SPEAKER SYSTEM terminals: Connect speakers using speaker cords. Ensure correct polarity ([positive terminal] and [negative terminal]) is observed.
- 9. AC INLET: Connect the supplied AC power cord to a household AC power outlet.
- 10. RC-5 IN / OUT jack: Allows power control (ON/OFF/Standby) from Marantz remote control compatible components like A/V preamplifiers or surround receivers.
- 11. Ventilation hole: CAUTION: The unit generates heat during operation. Never place objects on the set or block the back side to maintain proper ventilation.
- 12. AC OUTLET: This receptacle supplies AC power regardless of the power switch setting. The total power consumption of connected equipment should not exceed 120W.

Antenna Grounding Example (Figure 1)
Figure 1 illustrates an example of antenna grounding according to National Electrical Code instructions contained in Article 810 - "Radio and Television Equipment". It depicts the proper connection of an antenna lead-in wire, ground clamp, electric service equipment, antenna discharge unit (NEC SECTION 810-20), grounding conductors (NEC SECTION 810-21), ground clamps, and the power service grounding electrode system (NEC ART 250, PART H).
This Class B digital apparatus meets all requirements of the Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Regulations.
NOTE TO CATV SYSTEM INSTALLER: This reminder calls attention to Article 820-40 of the NEC, which provides guidelines for proper grounding, specifying that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as practical.
Connections
This section details how to connect the Marantz MM9000 to other components.
Connecting to a Marantz Surround Preamplifier (AV9000)
Connect the AUDIO OUTPUTS (FRONT L/R, CENTER, SURROUND L/R) from the AV9000 to the corresponding INPUT jacks on the MM9000. Connect the REMOTE OUT from the AV9000 to the REMOTE CONT IN jack on the MM9000 for remote control functionality.
Remote Control via Video Signal
Connect the VIDEO OUT from a VCR, TV, or other video component to the VIDEO/VOLTAGE jack on the MM9000. The MM9000 will switch between POWER ON and STANDBY modes based on the presence or absence of a video signal. It enters STANDBY mode approximately 4 seconds after the video signal is lost and returns to POWER ON when the signal is reacquired. External control using a 5 to 13V DC signal is also possible via this jack.
Connecting Speakers
Connect speakers to the SPEAKER SYSTEM terminals (8 Ohm minimum) on the MM9000 using appropriate speaker cables. Ensure correct polarity ([positive terminal] and [negative terminal]) is observed for each connection.
Connecting to Marantz MA700 Subwoofer
Connect the Subwoofer output from the MM9000 to the Marantz MA700 (For Subwoofer) unit. Connect the AC power cords for both units to power outlets.
Speaker Connection
This equipment, being a high audio output power amplifier, carries a hazardous energy level at its speaker terminals. Please ensure an appropriate speaker connection according to the following procedures:
- Confirm that the power switch of the equipment is at the "OFF" position. If it is at "ON", turn it to "OFF" before connecting a speaker cable.
- Use a speaker cable with the flame retardant rating of type SPT12 or more.
- Do not strip more insulation than shown in the figure at the speaker terminal connection of the speaker cable.
- Strip the insulation off the tip of the cord.
- Twist the cord.
- Connect speakers in correct polarity, according to the indication for the polarity of speaker terminals.
- Prevent any stress from being applied to the speaker cable connected to the speaker terminal.
- Do not touch the speaker terminals during operation.
To connect speaker cables:
- Loosen the Terminal.
- Insert the core of the speaker cable.
- Tighten the Terminal.
Care and Maintenance
This section describes the care and maintenance tasks that must be performed to optimize the operation of your Marantz equipment.
Cleaning of Equipment External Surfaces
The exterior finish of your unit will last indefinitely with proper care and cleaning. Never use scouring pads, steel wool, scouring powders, or harsh chemical agents (e.g., lye solution), alcohol, thinners, benzine, insecticide, or other volatile substances, as these will mar the finish of the equipment. Likewise, never use cloths containing chemical substances. If the equipment gets dirty, wipe the external surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth.
If the equipment becomes heavily soiled:
- Dilute some washing-up liquid in water, in a ratio of one part detergent to six parts water.
- Dip a soft, lint-free cloth in the solution and wring the cloth out until it is damp.
- Wipe the equipment with the damp cloth.
- Dry the equipment by wiping it with a dry cloth.
Repairs
Only the most competent and qualified technicians should be allowed to service your unit. Marantz and its factory-trained warranty station personnel have the knowledge and special equipment needed for repair and calibration of this precision instrument. In the event of difficulty, call the toll-free telephone number listed on the face of the warranty to obtain the name and address of the Marantz Authorized Service Center nearest you. In many cases, the dealer where you purchased your Marantz unit may be equipped to provide service. Please include the model, serial number of your unit, a copy of your purchase receipt, and a full description of what you feel is abnormal in its behavior.
