3. Develop personal safe-use methods suited to your ability.
4. Never try new maneuvers alone; consult your healthcare provider.
5. Identify and learn to avoid hazards in areas where you plan to use the chair.
G. Safety Checklist
WARNING: Before each use:
1. Ensure the chair rolls easily and all parts function smoothly. Check for unusual noise, vibration, or changes in ease of use (indicating potential issues like low tire pressure or loose fasteners).
2. Repair any problems immediately. Contact your authorized supplier for assistance.
3. Verify both rear quick-release axles are locked (button should pop out fully). An unlocked axle can cause the wheel to detach.
4. If equipped, lock anti-tip tubes in place.
H. Changes & Adjustments
WARNING: Modifications or adjustments may increase the risk of tip-over unless compensated for. Consult your authorized supplier BEFORE making changes. Use anti-tip tubes until you are accustomed to any change. Unauthorized modifications void the warranty and create safety hazards.
I. Environmental Conditions
WARNING: Use extra care on wet or slick surfaces. Avoid extreme weather. Do not use in showers or pools, as parts are not watertight and may rust. Dry the chair if it gets wet. Avoid salt or salty conditions, which can cause damage.
J. Terrain
WARNING: Use a 5" caster wheel for obstacles up to 1/2". The chair is designed for firm, even surfaces (concrete, asphalt, carpet). Do not use on sand, loose soil, or rocky terrain. Rough terrain can loosen fasteners and damage wheels/axles, risking falls or tip-overs.
K. Street Use
WARNING: This product is not intended for street use. Avoid streets; obey pedestrian laws. Be alert for motor vehicles.
L. Motor Vehicle Safety
If possible, transfer to an approved vehicle seat and use OEM restraints. Sunrise Medical offers a WC-19 Wheelchair Tie-Down and Occupant Restraint System (Transit Option). Look for four securement points (two front, two rear) marked by a decal. If your chair has the Transit Option, consult the "Transit Securement Supplement". If not equipped with the Transit Option: NEVER let anyone sit in the chair in a moving vehicle. Always move the rider to an approved seat with proper restraints. Seat belts do not prevent ejection in an accident. Never transport the chair in the front seat. Always secure the chair to prevent rolling or shifting. Do not use a chair involved in a motor vehicle accident.
M. When You Need Help
WARNING:
For Riders: Ensure helpers read and follow all instructions.
For Attendants: Work with healthcare professionals for safe methods. Communicate plans to the rider. Ensure push handles are present and secure. Use proper body mechanics (bend knees, keep back straight) when lifting or tilting. Remind the rider to lean back when tilting. Descend curbs/steps slowly. Unlock and rotate anti-tip tubes up when not attending. Always use wheel locks and lock anti-tip tubes when the chair is unattended. Ask for help if in doubt.
N. Choking Hazard
WARNING: The chair has small parts that could be a choking hazard to young children. Keep parts out of reach.
O. Pinch Point
WARNING: The wheelchair has moving parts that can create pinch points. Be aware during adjustments, folding/unfolding, and moving.
VI. Safety Warnings: Falls & Tip-Overs
A. Center of Balance
WARNING: The chair's tipping point depends on its center of balance and stability. Adjustments to rear wheel position, camber, seat height/angle, backrest angle, body position, or riding on slopes affect stability. Moving rear wheels forward increases tip-over risk backward. Consult your doctor/therapist for axle/caster position. Consult your supplier before modifying. Use anti-tip tubes.
B. Dressing or Changing Clothes
WARNING: Weight shifts can cause falls. Rotate front casters forward for stability. Lock anti-tip tubes. If no anti-tip tubes, back against a wall and lock rear wheels.
C. Obstacles
WARNING: Curbs and obstacles can cause tipping. Ask for help if unsure. Scan the area ahead. Ensure floors are level and free of obstructions. Remove threshold strips. Install ramps without drop-offs. Lean forward when going UP obstacles, backward when going DOWN. Use anti-tip tubes and seek help for obstacles. Keep hands on handrims. Do not push/pull on objects for propulsion.
D. Front Caster Lift
WARNING: Front casters can lift unintentionally. Never attempt pitch control without consulting a healthcare advisor and ensuring anti-tips are installed.
E. Reaching or Leaning
WARNING: Reaching/leaning affects balance and can cause falls. Never reach/lean if it requires shifting weight sideways or rising. Keep buttocks against the backrest. Never reach with both hands. Do not reach backward unless anti-tip tubes are locked. Avoid reaching over the seat back. If reaching is necessary: do not lock rear wheels, do not put pressure on footrests, move chair close to the object, reach to the side, rotate casters forward, and grasp a rear wheel or armrest.
F. Moving Backward
WARNING: Move backward with extra care. The chair is most stable forward. Losing control or tipping can occur if a rear wheel stops suddenly. Propel slowly and smoothly. Lock anti-tip tubes. Stop often to check path.
G. Escalators
WARNING: NEVER use this chair on an escalator, even with an attendant. A fall or tip-over is likely.
H. Ramps, Slopes & Sidehills
WARNING: Avoid slopes; they change the center of balance and reduce stability. Do not use on slopes steeper than 6°. Go straight up/down; do not turn on slopes. Stay centered on ramps. Do not stop on steep slopes. Never use rear wheel locks to slow down. Be aware of wet surfaces, grade changes, and drop-offs. Lean uphill when going up, and lean backward when going down. Keep pressure on handrims for speed control on down slopes. Ask for help if in doubt. Ramps must meet legal requirements. Avoid drop-offs at ramp transitions. For attendants: stay behind the chair, grasp handles, and keep the chair facing forward.
I. Transfer
WARNING: Transfers are dangerous without assistance. Balance and agility are required. There's a point where the seat is not below you. Work with a healthcare advisor for safe methods. Have someone help until safe methods are learned. Lock rear wheels. The chair can still slide/tip. Ensure pneumatic tires are properly inflated. Move chair close to the transfer seat. Use a transfer board if possible. Rotate front casters forward. Remove or swing footrests out of the way. Ensure feet do not catch. Avoid putting weight on footrests. Remove or swing armrests out of the way. Transfer as far back onto the seat as possible.
J. Curbs & Single Steps
WARNING: Always ask for assistance before attempting curbs or steps, as they can cause tipping. Be aware of your skills and limitations. Develop skills with a companion. Attendants must read instructions. Do not climb high curbs/steps without help. Go straight up/down; angled attempts risk falls. Impact can damage the chair or loosen fasteners.
K. Climbing a Curb or Single Step
WARNING: For attendants: Stay behind the chair. Move backward until rear wheels contact the curb. Lift and roll rear wheels over. Pull chair back until casters clear the edge.
L. Descending a Curb or Single Step
WARNING: For attendants: Stay at the rear. Tip chair slightly and pull backward. At balance point, step forward until rear wheels reach the edge, then roll down. Push chair forward to the lower level. Tilt chair back to balance point.
M. Stairs
WARNING: NEVER use on stairs without help; this risks falls/tip-overs. Requires at least 2 attendants.
N. Climbing Stairs
WARNING: Use at least two attendants. Move chair and rider BACKWARD up stairs. Person at rear controls by tilting to balance point. Second attendant lifts front frame over each stair. Repeat for each stair.
O. Descending Stairs
WARNING: Use at least two attendants. Move chair and rider FORWARD down stairs. Person at rear controls by tilting to balance point. Second attendant grasps frame and lowers chair one step at a time. Repeat for each stair.
VII. Warnings: Components & Options
A. Anti-Tip Tubes
WARNING: Anti-tip tubes help prevent backward tipping. When locked, they should be 1.5-2 inches off the ground. Higher settings may not prevent tip-over; lower settings may snag on obstacles. Rotate tubes up and out of the way when climbing curbs or overcoming obstacles; an attendant may need to assist.
B. Armrests
WARNING: Armrests detach and do not support weight. NEVER lift the chair by armrests; they may detach or break. Lift only by non-detachable frame parts.
C. Caster Pin Locks
WARNING: Use both pin locks when transferring. These locks only prevent front casters from changing direction, not rotation. Engage rear wheel locks to prevent rolling. Propelling with caster pin locks engaged prevents turning.
D. Cushions & Sling Seats
WARNING: Sling seats and standard cushions are not for pressure relief. Consult a doctor/therapist for special seating if at risk of pressure sores. Seat slings are not direct seating surfaces; use a cushion. Improper use can cause injury.
E. Fasteners
WARNING: Use only authorized or equivalent strength fasteners. Over/under-tightening can cause failure. Tighten loose screws/bolts promptly. Do not reuse fasteners.
F. Footrests
WARNING: Footrests should be at least 2 inches off the ground to avoid snagging on obstacles, which can cause sudden stops and forward tipping. Swing footrests out of the way or remove them for transfers. Ensure feet do not catch between footrests. Avoid putting weight on footrests. NEVER lift the chair by the footrests. Do not use footrests to open doors.
G. Pneumatic Tires
Proper inflation extends tire life and improves usability. WARNING: Do not use under- or over-inflated tires. Check weekly. Low pressure can cause wheel locks to slip or the chair to veer. Over-inflation can cause tires to burst.

H. Positioning Belts (Optional)
WARNING: Positioning belts support posture and limit slipping but are NOT transit-rated safety belts. Improper use can cause severe injury or death. Ensure belts are snug but not tight enough to restrict breathing. Use only with cooperative riders who can remove belts in emergencies. Do not use as a patient restraint or motor vehicle restraint.
I. Push Handles (Optional)
WARNING: Ensure push handles are present for attendants to hold the rear of the chair. Check that grips are secure and do not rotate or slip off.
J. Quick-Release Axles
WARNING: Ensure both quick-release rear axles are locked before use. An unlocked axle can detach, causing falls or tip-overs. Periodically clean and inspect axles.
K. Rear Wheels
WARNING: Rear wheel setup affects the center of balance. Moving axles forward increases backward tip-over risk. Consult your healthcare advisor for axle setup. Adjust wheel locks after any axle change; ensure lock arms embed 1/8" into the tire.
