Kinetix 5100 Feedback Connector Kit Installation Instructions
Catalog Number: 2198-K51CK-D15M
About the Feedback Connector Kit
This kit is designed for use with Allen-Bradley® 2090-Series motor feedback cables and provides wire terminations for encoder signals to the motor feedback (MFB) connector on Kinetix® 5100 drives.
Refer to the Kinetix 5100 Single-axis EtherNet/IP™ Servo Drive User Manual, publication 2198-UM004, for more information on compatible 2090-Series feedback cables and wiring the kit.
Prepare the Feedback Cable
To prepare existing Bulletin 2090 cables for use with the Kinetix 5100 feedback connector kit, prepare the cable shield, conductor lengths, and strip lengths according to these guidelines:
- Trim the shield flush so that no strands can cause a short to adjacent terminals.
- Measure conductor lengths to ensure they are long enough to provide a service loop.
- Remove sufficient insulation from each conductor to achieve the proper strip length.
Feedback Cable Preparation Diagram
The feedback cable consists of a cable jacket, cable shield, and drain wire. Dimensions are provided in millimeters (inches):
- Cable Jacket: Encloses the internal components.
- Cable Shield: Approximately 5 mm (0.20 in.) in diameter.
- Drain Wire: Approximately 7 mm (0.3 in.) from the edge of the shield.
- Conductor lengths: Indicated as 120 mm (4.7 in.) and 127 mm (5.0 in.) for conductors.
IMPORTANT: The drain wire from your 2090-Series motor cable must be connected to the drain terminal. If your cable lacks a drain wire, create one from the overall shield during wire preparation and connect it to the drain terminal.
Install the Connector Kit
Follow these steps to install the connector kit:
- Remove the Phillips head screw from the cover.
- Depress the snap-fits using a small screwdriver or probe and pull the cover away from the base.
- Route signal wires and the drain wire to their respective terminals. Refer to "Connector Data" on page 3 for the 16-pin terminal pinout.
- Tighten terminal screws to a maximum torque of 0.2 N·m (1.77 lb·in).
- To ensure a high-frequency bond between the shield braid and clamp, apply the shield clamp to the exposed cable shield.
IMPORTANT: The shield clamp provides a proper ground and improves system performance. For optimal performance, it is critical to clamp the exposed braid under the shield clamp.
- Attach a tie wrap (customer-supplied) for stress relief and wire management.
- Tighten clamp screws to a maximum torque of 0.35 N·m (3.097 lb·in).
- Replace the cover and install the cover screw. Tighten the cover screw to a maximum torque of 0.35 N·m (3.097 lb·in).
Connector Kit Assembly Diagram
The diagram illustrates the Kinetix 5100 Feedback Connector Kit (2198-K51CK-D15M). Key components shown include:
- The connector housing with snap-fits and guide pins.
- An 8-pin connector (2x) and a 15-pin D-sub to Motor Feedback (MFB) Connector.
- Mounting screws (2x).
- A Bulletin 2090 Feedback Cable connected to the MFB connector.
- Service loops for the cable.
- A tie wrap recommended for stress relief and wire management.
- A shield clamp positioned over the exposed cable shield, secured by clamp screws (2x).
Install or Replace Battery
A 3.6V, ER14252, or equivalent, 1/2AA size battery is required for absolute position backup of the TLP motor. To install the battery, follow these steps:
- Open the cover by removing the screw and depressing the two snap-fits.
- Insert the battery as shown.
- Replace the cover and install the cover screw. Tighten the cover screw to a maximum torque of 0.35 N·m (3.097 lb·in).
