User Guide

Overview

This section provides a detailed overview of the Kogan Espresso Barista Coffee Machine and Grinder, including its components.

Before First Use

  1. Ensure all components are included and not damaged.
  2. Fill the water tank with clean water. Do not exceed the 'MAX' mark.
  3. Insert a single or double-cup filter into the portafilter and lock it anti-clockwise.
  4. Plug in the power cord and press the power button. The machine will preheat and enter standby mode.
  5. Align the steam tube towards the drip tray and turn the knob to 'Hot water' or 'Steam'. Hot water or steam will flow from the steam tube.
  6. Press 'Single' or 'Double' to clean the pipes. Hot water will come out of the portafilter. Use a cup or drip tray to collect the hot water.
  7. Dispose of the collected hot water.
  8. Clean detachable parts with warm water.

Operation

Install the Grinder:

  1. Insert the cutter head into the coffee machine and tighten clockwise. Place the hopper on top.
  2. Align the hopper with the grooves in the coffee machine, press down, and rotate clockwise to install.

Make Espresso Coffee:

  1. Ensure the hopper is installed correctly. The grind indicator will turn solid when ready.
  2. Add coffee beans to the hopper, avoiding overfilling.
  3. Place the appropriate filter (single or double cup) into the portafilter and insert into the bracket.
  4. Press the 'Grind' button for single (1 press) or double (2 presses) cup grinding. Grinding stops automatically based on set amount (9 seconds for single, 13 seconds for double).
  5. Remove the portafilter and tap gently to distribute grounds.
  6. Use the tamper to apply approximately 12.5kg of force.
  7. Align the portafilter with the coffee outlet and lock it anti-clockwise.
  8. Place a cup on the cup holder.
  9. Press 'Single' or 'Double' to brew. The machine stops dispensing when the set level is reached (approx. 30ml for single, 60ml for double) and enters standby mode.

Notes:

Boil Hot Water:

  1. Place a cup under the steam tube.
  2. Turn the knob to 'Hot water'. The hot water indicator flashes, and hot water dispenses from the nozzle.
  3. Turn the knob to the centre to stop. The hot water indicator illuminates solidly, and the machine enters standby mode.

Notes:

Froth Milk:

  1. Fill the milk pitcher with 100ml (quarter full) for cappuccino or 150ml (third full) for latte. Place under the steam tube.
  2. Turn the knob to 'Steam'. The steam indicator illuminates during preheating and flashes when steam is ready.
  3. Tilt the pitcher and position the steam tube so the end is 1cm under the milk surface.
  4. Turn the knob to the centre when milk is frothed.

Coffee Machine Settings

Grind Time:

  1. Ensure the hopper is correctly installed and filled with coffee beans.
  2. Press and hold the 'Grind' button to adjust single cup grinding amount until the indicator flashes and the grinder starts.
  3. Release the 'Grind' button to stop. The buzzer sounds, and the machine records the grind time.

Note: Grind time can be adjusted between 4-18 seconds.

Coffee Amount:

  1. Ensure sufficient water in the tank.
  2. Press and hold 'Single' or 'Double' until the indicator stays solid and dispensing begins.
  3. Release the button when the desired amount is reached. The buzzer sounds for 1 second, and the machine records the amount.

Note: Maximum coffee amount is 125ml for single cup and 250ml for double cup.

Restore to Factory Coffee Amount:

Standby Time:

  1. Press and hold 'Grind' and 'Single' buttons simultaneously. The power indicator flashes, and the standby time indicator illuminates. Options: Grind (10 min), Single (20 min), Double (29 min).
  2. Press the 'Power' button to save the new standby time. A buzzer sounds, and the machine returns to standby mode.

Cleaning & Care

WARNING: Unplug the coffee machine before cleaning. Allow it to cool to prevent scalding. Do not immerse the machine or power cord in water or other liquids.

When to Clean the Grinder:

Cleaning the Grinder:

  1. Rotate the hopper anti-clockwise to remove.
  2. Turn the grinding wheel anti-clockwise to remove. Use the cleaning brush to clean the grinding wheel and remove residual grounds. Do not rinse the grinding wheel.
  3. Use the cleaning brush to clean the grinding chamber and coffee-dispensing channel.
  4. Do not reinstall the grinding wheel yet. Reinstall the empty hopper. Press 'Grind' to clear residue.
  5. If powder remains, repeat steps 3 and 4.
  6. Remove the hopper and install the grinding wheel.

Note: Ensure no coffee beans are in the hopper during cleaning.

Descaling:

Descaling Preparation:

  1. Step 1: Add chosen solution to the water tank. (Dissolve tablets, add half cup liquid descaler + 1L warm water, or 1.5 spoonsful white vinegar + 1L warm water).
  2. Step 2: Insert the water tank.
  3. Step 3: Place 1L containers under the coffee outlet and steam tube.

Start Descaling:

  1. In standby mode, press and hold 'Grind', 'Single', and 'Double' buttons for 5 seconds. Power indicator flashes, hot water and steam indicators illuminate, single and double cup indicators turn off.
  2. Turn knob to 'Steam'. Steam indicator flashes, pump operates, hot water dispenses from outlet and tube.
  3. When hot water dispensing stops, power indicator flashes slowly, steam and hot water indicators flash rapidly.
  4. Turn knob to centre. Steam and hot water indicators illuminate solidly.

  1. Turn knob to 'Hot water'. Hot water indicator flashes, pump operates, hot water dispenses.
  2. When hot water dispensing stops, power and hot water indicators flash, power and grind indicators illuminate solidly, single and double cup indicators turn off.
  3. Turn knob to centre. Descaling program ends, machine returns to standby mode.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Indicators are not illuminating. No power. Ensure the power plug is connected and the power button is pressed.
Grind indicator is flashing. Hopper is not installed. Install the hopper.
Water marks on the bottom of the machine. Water tank or drip tray not installed, or drip tray is full. Install water tank and drip tray; ensure drip tray is empty.
Machine makes a hissing sound after dispensing coffee. Normal operation of the pressure control valve. N/A
No coffee dispensed, drips slowly, or portafilter improperly installed. Excessive or too fine coffee grounds. Adjust grind time and coffee amount. Do not tamp excessively.
Coffee without crema. Damp beans or too coarse grounds. Use fresh beans and grounds with a moderate grind size.
No steam is produced. Steam nozzle is blocked. Descale the machine and use the cleaning pin to clean the steam nozzle.
Machine will not make coffee or hot water immediately after steaming, automatically pumps water. Pressure needs release after steaming for cooling. Other operations cannot be performed during this time. It takes 20-30 seconds for pressure release and cooling. Machine will operate normally afterward.
Single, double, steam, and hot water indicators are flashing. Machine requires descaling. Refer to the 'Descaling' section for instructions. For more help, visit help.Kogan.com and search 'KAESCOFFGRA'.
