Comfort-Aire Commercial Water Source Heat Pumps
Energy efficient heating and cooling for commercial applications
Introduction
Comfort-Aire commercial water source heat pumps are ideal for improving the efficiency of older buildings and for designing sustainable structures. These systems use less energy, reducing the economic and environmental impact compared to fossil fuel-powered HVAC systems. Multiple package models connected by a water loop are perfect for zoned heating and cooling in facilities like schools, nursing homes, and condominiums, providing superior comfort and energy control. Large capacity models are designed to condition single, expansive spaces.
With an extensive range of models, capacities, and voltages, there's a unit to meet the demands of designers, contractors, and building owners. The innovative cabinet design allows units to fit almost any existing location, and multiple access panels simplify installation, even in tight spaces.

Quiet Operation
- Dual spring and grommet isolation mounting system for the compressor reduces vibration.
- Flexible torsion motor mounting further reduces vibration and related sound.
- Compressor and air handler compartments are separated by an insulated divider, and the blower housing is covered in noise suppression material.
- Discharge muffler reduces inherent compressor pulse noise.
Easy Servicing
- Components are accessible from multiple sides for simplified service and maintenance.
- Removable blower inlet rings allow easy access to the fan and motor for maintenance.
- Safety features protect the unit: High pressure and loss of refrigerant charge; condensate overflow; freeze protection for coaxial heat exchanger and air coil; fault lock-out enables emergency heat and prevents compressor operation; anti-short cycle protects the compressor.
Understanding Energy Efficiency
The HVAC industry has made significant advances in energy efficiency for heating and cooling systems. Efficiency is judged by industry standards like the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for cooling and the Coefficient of Performance (COP) for heating.
- EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio): This ratio measures total cooling capacity to electrical energy output. A higher EER indicates greater efficiency. Comfort-Aire water source units achieve EER ratings as high as 15.5 (water loop installation), offering substantial improvement over other commercial cooling equipment.
- COP (Coefficient of Performance): This ratio measures total heating capacity to electrical energy output. A higher COP indicates greater efficiency. Water source systems offer significantly higher COP ratings compared to conventional gas or electric heating equipment.
Glossary of Terms
- Water Loop: A commercial water source installation where a water loop connects all individual, independently controlled units. Excess heat is rejected through a cooling tower, and additional heat is added by a boiler in the loop.
- Ground Loop: A geothermal system with heat transfer liquid sealed in buried piping or submerged in a pond or lake (also called "Closed Loop").
- Ground Water: A geothermal system using water pulled from an aquifer for heat transfer, then released to another well, ditch, or water source (also called "Open Loop").
- R-454B: The environmentally friendly refrigerant used in these units.
All Comfort-Aire WSHPs are rated in accordance with AHRI/ASHRAE/ISO 13256-1.
