Yaesu FT-950 HF/50MHz 100 W Transceiver

Experience innovation, quality, and features unmatched in its class with the Yaesu FT-950.

Introduction

The FT-950 is the latest addition to the esteemed lineage of the FT DX 9000 and FT-2000 series radios. It is designed to meet the needs of both casual and serious DX enthusiasts, as well as new HF licensees exploring the HF and 50 MHz bands. Its triple-conversion super-heterodyne receiver architecture features a 69.450 MHz 1st IF and powerful 1st IF 3 kHz/6 kHz/15 kHz selectable roofing filters (MCF). Enjoy advanced technology with the multi-function 30 kHz 32-bit Floating Point IF DSP. Enhance capabilities with the optional DMU-2000 Data Management Unit for advanced display functions and the optional RF -Tuning Preselector System. The FT-950 offers customization options shared with the FT DX 9000 and FT-2000 Series Transceivers.

The DXer's Choice: FT-950

High-Performance Receiver Design

Inherited from the proud lineage of the FT DX 9000/FT-2000 Series radios, the FT-950 boasts a high-performance receiver.

Triple-conversion Receiver Design with Optimized Stage Balance

The triple-conversion design utilizes a 1st IF of 69.45 MHz, a 2nd IF of 450 kHz, and a 3rd IF of 30 kHz (24 kHz for FM). Advanced filtering at each stage protects subsequent stages from unwanted signal voltage, ensuring a quiet and robust receiver with superior total system performance.

Robust Receiver Front End

The RF amplifier stage is designed for low and high intercept, employing two strong series-connected 2SC3356 bipolar transistors with negative feedback for consistent performance. The low noise figure and controlled stage gains ensure optimal gain utilization. The front panel "IPO" switch allows selection of direct feed to the first mixer (IPO), Preamp 1 (RF AMP1), or Preamp 2 (RF AMP2), enabling adaptation to various antenna and interference conditions. The IPO function optimizes RF stage performance. The first mixer features SPM5001 FETs in an active, doubly-balanced configuration, designed for severe multi-signal environments, resulting in no net gain loss and permitting direct signal feed.

Receiver Block Diagram: Illustrates the signal path from the Antenna Selector through the Front End (ATT, IPO, BPF, RF AMP1/2) to the IF stages (1st IF, Roofing Filter, 2nd IF, CF, 3rd IF DSP) and finally to AGC, DET, and DAC.

Factory Installed 1st IF Roofing Filters

The 69.450 MHz first IF stage includes three roofing filters (15 kHz, 6 kHz, and 3 kHz), automatically selected by mode for optimal performance on crowded bands. These four-pole, fundamental-mode monolithic crystal filters provide excellent shape factor and significantly improve the 3rd-Order Intercept Point performance.

3 kHz Roofing Filter Performance: A graph displays the filter's frequency response, showing its sharp cutoff characteristics.

High-speed Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) & Digital PLL

An ultra-low-noise local oscillator system provides a clean first IF signal, enhancing the receiver's strong-signal handling capabilities, spurious-free dynamic range, and close-in blocking performance through a high Carrier-to-Noise (C/N) ratio.

Local Design Block Diagram: Depicts the local oscillator system components including VCO, TCXO, DDS, and PLL.

Advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP)

The FT-950 features a legendary Yaesu 32-bit floating point IF DSP (TI TMS320C6713) for superior performance.

Variable IF WIDTH and IF SHIFT

The IF WIDTH control adjusts the passband bandwidth, allowing reduction to as little as 500 Hz (CW/RTTY/PKT) or expansion to 3 kHz (SSB). The IF SHIFT control varies the center frequency of the passband to eliminate interference outside the desired signal range. The NAR function offers further passband reduction. These systems work together to provide effective interference reduction.

IF WIDTH and IF SHIFT Selectivity: A table details the selectivity ranges for different modes (CW/RTTY/PKT, SSB, AM, FM).

IF WIDTH/SHIFT Diagrams: Visual representations show how IF WIDTH alters the passband's overall width and how IF SHIFT moves its center frequency.

CONTOUR Control

The CONTOUR control allows shaping the receiver passband by adjusting low-frequency or high-frequency components, or nulling mid-range interference, thereby improving fidelity and signal-to-noise ratio.

CONTOUR Filter Conceptual Diagram: Illustrates the concept of shaping the audio passband.

Manual IF Notch and Digital Notch Filter (DNF)

The manual IF Notch filter offers deep notching (over 70 dB). The digital NOTCH function (DNF) provides automatic reduction of multiple carriers within the passband.

IF NOTCH Performance: A graph demonstrates the deep attenuation provided by the IF Notch filter.

DSP Digital Noise Reduction

Utilizes a powerful Digital Noise Reduction filter with fifteen noise analysis parameters to effectively reduce random noise under various conditions.

Digital Noise Reduction Performance: A graph shows the filter's effect on signal output versus frequency.

Analog-sounding High-quality Digital SSB Modulation

Provides an analog-sounding SSB modulation envelope with adjustable transmission bandwidth.
