Quick Start Guide

Step 1: Connecting Speakers, Microphones, and Instruments

Connection Example:

This section describes how to connect various audio sources and outputs to the mixer. The diagram illustrates the following connections:

  • Microphones connect to the [MIC/LINE] mono input jacks (channels 1/L and 2/R).
  • Electric Acoustic Guitar connects to the [MIC/LINE] mono input jacks (channels 1/L and 2/R).
  • Electric Keyboard connects to the [LINE] stereo input jacks (channels 3/4 or 5/6).
  • Portable Audio Player connects to the [LINE] stereo input jacks (channels 3/4 or 5/6).
  • Powered Speakers connect to the [STEREO OUT] output jacks (L and R).
  • Headphones connect to the [PHONES] output jack.

Note: Stereo mini plugs require conversion plugs to phone plugs.

Step 2: Getting Sound to the Speakers

  1. Ensure all switches, including the [On/Standby] switch, are not pressed (standby mode).
  2. Connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DC IN [12V] jack on the rear panel and then to an electrical outlet.
  3. Turn on the power to connected devices in the following order: microphones, instruments, audio devices, then the mixer, and finally the speakers. (Reverse this order when turning power off to avoid loud noise.)
  4. Set the [STEREO LEVEL] knob to the "0" position.
  5. For channels with microphones, set the [GAIN] knob to approximately the 12 o'clock position.
  6. While playing an instrument or speaking into the microphone, turn the [LEVEL] knob to adjust the volume for that channel.
  7. If necessary, adjust the speaker or power amp volume. If the sound is appropriate, setup is complete.
  8. If no sound is heard or volume needs adjustment, follow the instructions in the "Troubleshooting" section.

Mixer Basics: Where Your Sound Goes

This section explains the signal flow within the mixer. Sound enters through the input jacks (from microphones or instruments), is processed through the channels, summed (mixed) together, and then output to speakers or headphones.

The process involves:

  1. Inputting sound from microphones or instruments.
  2. Adjusting the sound quality and volume of each channel using GAIN and LEVEL knobs, and the Equalizer (HIGH, LOW).
  3. The signal flows from the channels to the final output.
  4. Final adjustment of the overall mixed sound volume using the [STEREO LEVEL] knob.
  5. Outputting the sound from speakers or headphones.

Applying Effects (MG06X Only)

The MG06X features built-in SPX-class Reverb and Delay effects to enhance vocals and instruments. These effects simulate various performance environments.

  1. Use the [REVERB/DELAY] switch to select Reverb (?️) or Delay (?️).
  2. Move the effect select slide switch up and down to choose the effect type. The LED for the selected effect will light up. Available types include:
    • REVERB HALL: Reverb simulating a large space like a concert hall.
    • ROOM: Reverb simulating a small space (room).
    • PLATE: Reverb simulating a metal plate, producing a harder sound.
    • DELAY SHORT: Short echo with a "doubled" sound.
    • DELAY LONG: Long, resonant echo with extended decay.
    • VO. ECHO: Echo suitable for vocals.
  3. Turn on the [FX] switch for the channel (1/L or 2/R) to which you want to apply the effect.
  4. Turn the [FX RTN LEVEL] knob to adjust the amount of the effect.

Controls and Functions

The mixer panel features various controls for input, processing, and output. The following describes each section:

Input Jacks

  • [MIC/LINE] Mono Input Jacks (Channels 1/L, 2/R): These jacks accept both XLR and phone plugs for connecting microphones, instruments, or audio devices.
  • [LINE] Stereo Input Jacks (Channels 3/4, 5/6): These jacks accept phone plugs for connecting line-level devices like electric keyboards or audio players. Using only the [L/MONO] jack outputs the same sound from both L and R speakers.

Input Controls

  • [PAD] Switches: When turned on (?️), these switches attenuate the input signal. Use them if you hear distortion or the [PEAK] LED lights up. Note: Set the [LEVEL] knob to minimum before toggling the [PAD] switch to avoid noise.
  • [HPF] (High-Pass Filter) Switches: When turned on (?), these switches attenuate frequencies below 80Hz. Useful for reducing unwanted low-frequency noise (e.g., wind sound) when using a microphone.
  • [GAIN] Knobs: Adjusts the basic volume for each channel (1/L and 2/R). Set these so the corresponding [PEAK] LED flashes briefly when singing or playing at the loudest level. If the [PEAK] LED doesn't light even when the [GAIN] knob is fully right, increase the source volume.
  • [LEVEL] Knobs: Adjusts the volume balance among the channels.

Output Controls

  • [STEREO OUT] Output Jacks: These jacks (XLR and phone plugs) connect to powered speakers or power amplifiers.
  • [PHONES] Output Jack: Connects a set of headphones. Supports a stereo phone plug.
  • [PHONES LEVEL] Knob: Adjusts the headphone volume.
  • [STEREO LEVEL] Knob: Adjusts the overall volume output from the [STEREO OUT] jacks.

Effects Controls (MG06X Only)

  • [REVERB/DELAY] Switch: Selects between Reverb (?️) and Delay (?️).
  • Effect Select Slide Switch: Selects the effect type (e.g., HALL, ROOM, PLATE, SHORT, LONG, VO. ECHO). The LED of the selected effect lights up.
  • [FX] Switches: Toggles the effect send for channels 1/L and/or 2/R on and off.
  • [FX RTN LEVEL] Knob: Adjusts the volume of the effect sound returned to the mix.

Other Controls

  • [PHANTOM +48V] Switch/LED: Supplies +48V phantom power to the XLR inputs of channels 1/L and 2/R when on (⚡️). Use only with phantom-powered condenser microphones. CAUTION: Ensure this switch is off if phantom power is not needed. Do not connect/disconnect cables while this switch is on. Turn channel LEVEL knobs to minimum before operating this switch.
  • [On/Standby] Switch: Toggles the unit's power between On (?) and Standby (?). Wait 5 seconds before switching back on after setting to standby. Unplug the AC adaptor if not using for extended periods.
  • [MONO/STEREO] Switch:
    • [MONO]: Sound from channels 1/L or 2/R is output to both left and right speakers.
    • [STEREO]: Sound from channel 1/L is output only to the left speaker, and sound from channel 2/R is output only to the right speaker.
  • [PEAK] LED: Lights when the input or post-equalizer signal level reaches approximately 3dB below clipping. If lit, turn the [GAIN] knob left to lower the volume.
  • Equalizer (EQ) Knobs: Adjusts sound quality using [HIGH] (high frequency) and [LOW] (low frequency) knobs. Set to the center (flat) position if no adjustment is needed.
  • Level Meter: The L and R meters show the signal level output from the [STEREO OUT] jack. If the [PEAK] lamp lights red, use the [LEVEL] knob to lower the volume.
  • DC IN [12V] Jack: Connects the supplied AC power adaptor.

Mounting to Microphone Stand

The mixer can be mounted to a microphone stand using an optional adapter (A-10BMS).

  1. Turn the mixer upside down. Attach the microphone stand adapter securely to the bottom of the mixer, ensuring the screw holes align.
  2. Mount the mixer onto the microphone stand.
  3. Loosen the angle adjustment wingnut, adjust the mixer's angle as desired, and then tighten the wingnut securely.

Refer to the A-10BMS Owner's Manual for more information.
