Angles & Cuttings at the Drill
Understanding the angles of a drill bit is crucial for proper sharpening:
- Clearance Angle (α): The angle between the flank of the cutting edge and the machined surface.
- Rake Angle (γ): The angle of the cutting face relative to the workpiece.
- Wedge Angle (β): The angle formed by the cutting face and the flank.
- Tip Angle (σ): The angle at the tip of the drill bit.
- Chisel Edge Angle (Ψ): The angle of the cutting edge at the center of the drill bit.
The diagrams illustrate these angles and how they relate to the grinding process.
Safety Instructions
General Safety
- Read the manual carefully before commissioning.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (eye protection, dust mask, ear protection, work gloves).
- Ensure the machine is installed on a level, vibration-free surface with adequate space and lighting.
- Keep the work area clean and free of obstacles.
- Remove all tool keys and setting tools before switching on the machine.
- Never leave the running machine unattended.
- Only persons familiar with the machine and its dangers should operate, maintain, or repair it.
- Keep unauthorized persons and children away from the machine.
- Do not work when tired, not concentrated, or under the influence of medication, alcohol, or drugs.
- Do not use the machine in areas with flammable liquids, vapors, or gases.
- Disconnect the machine from the power supply before any adjustment, cleaning, maintenance, or repair work.
Electrical Safety
- Ensure the machine is properly grounded.
- Use only suitable extension cables.
- Handle the power cable with care; keep it away from heat, oil, sharp edges, and moving parts.
- Ensure proper plugs and outlets are used.
- Do not expose the machine to rain or moisture.
- The machine must be used with a residual current circuit breaker.
- Ensure the main switch is off before connecting the machine.
- The ON-OFF switch must be in good working order.
Special Safety Instructions
- Only grind dry.
- Do not reach into the running machine.
- Do not brake the grinding wheel with your hand or other objects.
- Do not use the machine if the grinding wheel is damaged.
- Always use the honing guide; otherwise, the drill may be expelled.
- Keep ventilation slots clear to prevent motor overheating.
Hazard Warnings
The manual uses the following warning symbols:
- DANGER: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.
- WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
- CAUTION: Indicates a possibly hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.
- NOTE: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in property damage.
Common sense and technical aptitude/training are the most important safety factors.
Transport
- Follow instructions on the transport packaging regarding center of gravity, attachment points, weight, and transport position.
- When lifting/setting down, stand firmly with legs hip-width apart, bend knees, keep back straight, and avoid jerky movements.
- Carry loads with both hands close to the body and with a straight back.
- Lift the assembled machine by its body, not by attachments.
- Secure the load appropriately when transporting by vehicle.
Operation
Check Delivery Content
Immediately check the delivery for transport damage and missing parts. Report any issues to your dealer or the shipping company.
Assembly
- Screw the 4 rubber feet into the holes on the underside of the machine.
- Connect the connection cable to the machine and the socket.
Handling
- The drill sharpener is not suitable for continuous use. The motor may switch off for thermal reasons. Allow it to cool down before restarting.
- If the workpiece turns blue during grinding, it is overheated and can be damaged. Reduce grinding removal or cool the workpiece in water.
- CAUTION: Avoid touching the grinding disc and workpiece immediately after use as they become very hot.
Setting up the Drill Bit
- Determine the drill diameter and select the appropriate collet.
- Insert the collet into the chuck at a 45° angle and tighten the clamping nut slightly.
- Insert the twist drill with approximately 35 mm projection into the chuck and tighten slightly at the front so the drill can still be moved.
Aligning the Drill Bit
- Reset the scale ring: Turn the drill size adjustment knob (2) clockwise as far as it will go, then counterclockwise to the size of the drill (e.g., 8 mm).
- Insert the chuck with drill bit completely into the setting guide, turning slightly.
- Push the drill bit forward in the chuck and turn it clockwise with the main cutting edge until it stops.
- Tighten the drill in the collet by turning it clockwise. Ensure the cutting lip is parallel to the guide edge of the chuck before grinding.
Grinding the Point Angle
- Switch on the machine.
- Insert the chuck carefully into the honing guide (main cutting edge). Ensure the chuck guide edge is completely in the guide groove.
- Turn the chuck slightly left and right until no grinding noise is heard.
- Pull the chuck out, turn it 180°, reinsert, and repeat the procedure until no more grinding noise is audible.
- Switch off the machine.
- Pull the chuck out and open the fixing handle.
Grinding the Lip Relief Angle
- Switch on the machine.
- Insert the chuck into the honing guide open space. Ensure the leading edge is correctly in the lead.
- Turn the chuck in the point guide until the grinding noise disappears.
- Pull the chuck out, turn it 180°, reinsert, and repeat the procedure.
- Switch off the machine.
- Pull the chuck out and open the fixing handle.
- Remove the finished ground drill bit.
Setting the Cross Cutting Edge
The size of the chisel edge can be adjusted using the knob (1).
Cleaning, Maintenance, Storage, Disposal
Cleaning
- Disconnect the machine from the power supply before cleaning.
- Regular cleaning ensures long service life and safe operation.
- Do not use solvents, nitro thinners, or other cleaning products that could damage the machine's finish.
- Observe the cleaning agent manufacturer's instructions.
- Remove chips and dirt after each use.
- Keep surfaces and ventilation slots free of dust and dirt.
- Use a soft cloth and mild soap solution, or moisture-free compressed air.
Maintenance
- The machine is low-maintenance. Malfunctions affecting safety must be repaired immediately.
- Before each operation, check safety devices.
- Regularly check warning and safety labels.
- Use only proper tools and original spare parts recommended by the manufacturer.
