KORG multipoly - Analog Modeling Synthesizer

The KORG multipoly is an analog modeling synthesizer designed for versatile sound creation. It features a wide range of audio-rate modulation capabilities for bright, fizzy, and bubbling effects. Users can utilize oscillators or the ring modulator as modulation sources, and blend in a noise generator for more chaotic timbres. The synthesizer includes vintage filters with built-in saturation and a post-filter anti-aliased Drive circuit for adding weight and grit, from subtle thickening to heavy distortion.

Filter Capabilities

The multipoly allows the use of two filters simultaneously, either in series or in parallel. Programs have two filter slots, A and B. A balance control allows crossfading between the two filters for each source (oscillators, noise, ring Mod), enabling a wide array of creative options. This facilitates chaining filters, such as a highpass followed by a lowpass, with the ability to route some oscillators around the highpass. The continuous crossfade and modulation of the A/B Balance offer unique effects. Filters can also run in stereo with separate panning for each source.

Multi/Poly Structure

Each Program in the multipoly is built with four oscillators, a noise generator, ring modulation, sync, and cross-modulation (x-mod). These are processed through two independent filters. The sound design is further enhanced by four loopable DAHDSR envelopes, five LFOs, and six Mod Processors. Complex per-voice motion is achieved with multi-lane Motion Sequencing 2.0, and three studio-quality insert effects provide final polishing.

A single Program can be layered up to four times in a Performance. Layer Rotate offers flexible round-robin switching between these Programs, triggered by key presses or the arpeggiator. Kaoss Physics allows for fluid, evolving modulation driven by gestures on the x/y pad. Four Mod Knobs provide intuitive, hands-on control over multiple low-level parameters. Additional sound shaping is available through two more Mod Processors, Master Reverb, and EQ.

Layer Rotate: This feature, inspired by the original Mono/Poly's paraphonic mode, allows cycling through up to four Programs with each key press, in repeating or random order. It supports triggering one, two, or three Programs at each step of the cycle, enabling complex patterns when combined with the arpeggiator.

Modulation and Control

The multipoly offers extensive control with numerous knobs and controllers for oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs, and effects. Four programmable Mod Knobs can be customized to enhance sounds and saved with new presets. The Hold button allows notes or chords to be sustained indefinitely, freeing up the hands for further sound exploration. The Pitch Bend and Modulation Wheels add further dimensions of realtime expression.

With over 5,500 modulation destinations, users can modulate almost any front-panel knob and on-screen parameter, including individual Motion Sequence Steps. Eight Mod Processors are available to transform modulation signals using quantization, smoothing, and curvature.

Motion Sequencing 2.0

Evolving from the wavestate's Wave Sequencing 2.0, Motion Sequencing 2.0 separates timing, pitch, shape, and four sets of Step Sequence values into distinct "Lanes." Each lane has its own loop start and end points, allowing for deep customization of phrase and modulation recording. Individual lanes can be modulated separately for each note, using various controllers. Lanes can also randomize step order and skip steps with a probability from 0 to 100%, creating organic, ever-changing sounds.

Kaoss Physics

Kaoss Physics simulates a ball rolling on a surface with adjustable tilt, bumps, and friction. Users can initiate the ball's movement by flicking the x/y pad or via another modulation source. Direct control is also possible by holding a finger on the pad. The ball's position generates eight modulation signals, which can be mapped to any modulation destination, including X/Y locations, distance from center, angle, and +/- X/Y signals. Walls can be configured to slow or accelerate the ball, and can be removed entirely for a wrap-around effect. Modeled environments with bumps can create specific modulation effects, such as returning values to zero or pushing them away from certain zones.

Production-Ready Effects

The multipoly features a comprehensive suite of effects, with three dedicated effects per Layer, plus a master reverb send and a master parametric EQ. Effects include standard processors like compressors, EQs, choruses, flangers, phasers, and stereo delays, alongside distinctive effects such as Wave Shaper, Talking Modulator, Reverse Delay, Multiband Mod Delay, and Overb. Modeled effects include VOX guitar amps, VOX wah, Vintage Distortion, CX-3 Rotary Speaker and Vibrato/Chorus, multi-head tape echo, and classic guitar pedal emulations.

Randomization and Software

A dedicated front-panel button with a "dice" icon enables intelligent randomization of sounds, allowing users to randomize the entire sound or specific elements like oscillators, filters, or effects. The results can be used directly or as a starting point for new creations.

The KORG multipoly Editor/Librarian software, available for macOS and Windows, allows for easy editing and organization of sounds via USB networking. It functions as a second front panel, providing real-time animation of modulation effects for enhanced programming.

Set Lists and Build Quality

Set Lists provide effortless organization of Performances and instant access during gigs or rehearsals. Smooth Sound Transitions ensure that previously played voices and effects continue to ring out naturally when a new sound is selected.

The multipoly features a semi-weighted keybed for a smooth and expressive playing experience. Knobs offer precise resistance for accurate sound dialing. The instrument boasts a solid aluminum front panel for durability and wooden side-panels with a blue-on-black color scheme, paying homage to the original Mono/Poly design.

Connections and Accessories

Balanced stereo outputs connect to any recording or monitoring system. A stereo headphone output is provided for private playing or onstage cueing. Din-style MIDI jacks ensure connectivity with other MIDI-equipped instruments and audio gear. USB supports class-compliant MIDI with Windows and macOS computers.

The multipoly comes with a custom-fit soft case for convenient transport.
