GE Appliances PGB935 Gas Range Installation Guide

Installation Instructions: GE Appliances Range PGB935

Converting to Propane Gas (or Converting Back to Natural Gas from Propane)

This range is factory set for natural gas. Conversion to propane gas must be performed by a qualified installer. Conversion orifices and instructions are located on the back of the range. Retain these instructions and all orifices for future conversion back to natural gas.

WARNING: FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARD

If instructions are not followed exactly, a fire or explosion may result, causing property damage, personal injury, or death. Installation must be performed by a qualified installer. Read these instructions completely and carefully.

Installation must comply with local codes or the National Fuel Gas Code (ANSI Z223.1/NFPA.54) in the US, and Canadian codes (CAN/CGA-B149.1 or B149.2) in Canada. The range is design-certified by CSA International and Canadian Gas Association.

Always use a NEW flexible connector for gas appliances. Old connectors can cause leaks and injury. Leak testing must be conducted per manufacturer instructions.

The range must be electrically grounded according to local codes or the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70) in the US, and CSA C22.1 in Canada. See Electrical Connections section.

Do not install with an air curtain hood or other range hood that blows air down onto the cooktop, as this can interfere with burner operation and create a fire or explosion hazard.

WARNING: Tip-Over Hazard

A child or adult can tip the range and be killed. Install the anti-tip bracket to the wall or floor. Engage the range to the anti-tip bracket by sliding it back so the foot is engaged. Re-engage the anti-tip bracket if the range is moved. Failure to do so can result in death or serious burns.

If an anti-tip bracket was not included, visit cafeappliances.com (or cafeappliances.ca in Canada).

Before beginning installation, switch power off at the service panel and lock it to prevent accidental activation. If locking is not possible, attach a prominent warning device (tag) to the panel.

Note to Installer: Leave these instructions with the consumer.

Note to Consumer: Keep these instructions for future reference.

Servicer: The electrical diagram is in an envelope attached to the back of the range.

Proper installation is the installer's responsibility. Product failure due to improper installation is not covered under warranty.

Before installing on linoleum or synthetic floor covering, ensure it can withstand 180°F without damage. Do not install over carpeting unless a 1/4" thick plywood or similar insulator is placed between the range and carpeting.

Mobile Home - Additional Installation Requirements

Installation must conform to the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standard, Title 24 CFR, Part 3280 (or ANSI A225.1/NFPA 501A or local codes if not applicable). In Canada, conform to CAN/CSA A240 standards or local codes.

When installed in a mobile home, the range must be secured to the floor during transit, conforming to the standards listed.

Dimensions and Clearances

Provide adequate clearances between the range and adjacent combustible surfaces for safe use. Minimum clearances:

  • 30" (76.2 cm) between burners and bottom of unprotected wood/metal cabinet.
  • 24" (61 cm) when cabinet bottom is protected by 1/4" (6.4 mm) flame-retardant millboard covered with No. 28 MSG sheet metal (.015" [.38 mm]), .015" (.38 mm) stainless steel, .025" (0.64 mm) aluminum, or .020" (0.5 mm) copper.
  • Installation of a microwave or cooking appliance over the cooktop must follow its specific instructions.
  • For island installation: 2-1/2" minimum from cutout to back edge of countertop, and 3" minimum from cutout to side edges of countertop.

Diagram Description: Shows required clearances for cabinets above and below the cooktop, side walls, and specific dimensions for the range body (e.g., 30" width, 36 1/4" ± 1/4" height, 28 3/4" depth with handle). It also illustrates dimensions for island installations.

CAUTION: To prevent drafts from affecting burner operation, seal all openings in the floor under and behind the appliance.

1 GAS SUPPLY

WARNING: Fire Hazard: Do not use a flame to check for gas leaks.

WARNING: Explosion Hazard: Do not exceed 25 ft-lbs of torque when making gas line connections. Overtightening may crack the pressure regulator.

Gas Pressure Regulator

Use the supplied regulator. For proper operation, inlet pressure should be:

  • Natural Gas: Minimum 6" Water Column, Maximum 13" Water Column
  • Propane Gas: Minimum 11" Water Column, Maximum 13" Water Column

Contact your local gas supplier if unsure about inlet pressure.

Shut off the main gas supply valve before disconnecting the old range and leave it off until the new hook-up is complete. Relight pilots on other gas appliances when turning gas back on.

A CSA International certified flexible metal appliance connector is recommended unless local codes require hard piping. Hard piping restricts movement; align carefully if used.

Apply pipe joint compound or Teflon* tape to all male pipe threads to prevent leaks.

  1. Install a manual shut-off valve in an easily accessed location outside the range. Ensure all users know its location and how to operate it.
  2. Install male 1/2" flare union adapter to the 1/2" NPT internal thread at the regulator inlet. Use a backup wrench on the regulator fitting to avoid damage.
  3. Install male 1/2" or 3/4" flare union adapter to the NPT internal thread of the manual shut-off valve, using a backup wrench to keep it from turning.
  4. Connect the flexible metal appliance connector to the adapter on the range. Position the range to permit connection at the shut-off valve.
  5. With all controls off, turn on the main gas supply valve. Use a liquid leak detector at all joints and connections to check for leaks.

When pressure testing the gas supply system, disconnect the range if using pressures > 1/2 psig. If using 1/2 psig or less, isolate the range by closing the shut-off valve.

Ensure inlet pressure is at least 1" greater than the operating (manifold) pressure for proper regulator operation.

Diagram Description: Illustrates connector hookup options, showing a flexible metal connector and a rigid pipe option, with components like gas pipe, shut-off valve, adapter, and regulator.

2 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

WARNING: Shock Hazard: This appliance must be properly grounded. Failure to do so can result in electric shock.

Electrical Requirements: 120-volt, 60 Hertz, properly grounded dedicated circuit protected by a 15-amp or 20-amp circuit breaker or time delay fuse.

Note: Automatic, wireless, or wired external switches that shut off power are not recommended.

Grounding

The power cord has a three-prong (grounding) plug. Plug into a standard three-prong grounding wall receptacle. The customer should have a qualified electrician check the receptacle and circuit for proper grounding.

If a two-prong receptacle is present, the customer must replace it with a properly grounded three-prong receptacle. DO NOT cut or remove the third (ground) prong. DO NOT use an adapter or extension cord.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI's) are not required or recommended for gas range receptacles. Nuisance tripping of GFCI breakers is possible.

Ensure proper ground exists before use.

3 SURFACE BURNERS

WARNING: Fire or Explosion Hazard: Do not operate the burner without all burner parts in place.

  1. Burners: Place surface burners into corresponding positions on the cooktop.
  2. Caps: Place caps on the proper size burner.
  3. Grates: Left and right grates are interchangeable. Place grates on the cooktop.

Diagram Description: Shows the components of a surface burner: burner base, cap, electrode, and the grates (left, right, center/griddle).

4 CHECK SURFACE BURNERS

Push and turn a knob to the LITE position. A clicking sound indicates proper ignition system operation. Sparks will appear at all burners, but gas flows only from the selected one. The burner should light within 4 seconds after air is purged from the supply line. Rotate the knob out of LITE position after the burner lights. Check each burner.

Quality of Flames

Visually determine flame quality. Normal flames:

  • (A) Soft blue flames (normal for natural gas)
  • (B) Yellow tips on outer cones (normal for propane gas)

Long, bright yellow flames are not normal. Normal flames may show orange tint when well heated or flickering orange due to gas/air particles.

5 CHECK BAKE AND BROIL BURNERS

  • Set Bake function to 350°F. Burner should light in 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Set broil to Broil Hi. Burner should light in 30 to 60 seconds.

6 INSTALL AND CHECK ANTI-TIP DEVICE

WARNING: Never completely remove the leveling leg, as the range will not be secured properly to the anti-tip device.

Follow instructions supplied with the ANTI-TIP bracket. The kit is included.

7 LEVEL THE RANGE

WARNING: Never completely remove the leveling leg, as the range will not be secured properly to the anti-tip device.

  1. Plug in the unit.
  2. Measure countertop height at the rear of the opening (X).
  3. Adjust two rear leveling legs so the rear of the cooktop is at the same height or higher than the counter (Y).
  4. Slide unit into place.
  5. Install oven shelves and position the range for installation.
  6. Check for levelness using a spirit level on an oven shelf, taking readings diagonally in both directions.
  7. Adjust front leveling legs until the range is level.
  8. Look under the unit and verify the rear leg is fully engaged with the anti-tip device. If not, remove the unit and adjust the rear leg height.

Diagram Description: Illustrates the leveling process, showing measurements X and Y for countertop height and the use of a spirit level on an oven shelf.

NOTE: Cooktop must be at or above counter level.

When All Hookups Are Completed

Ensure all controls are in the off position. Ensure combustion and ventilation air flow to the range is unobstructed.

Check that all packing materials and tape have been removed (including tape on panels, wire ties, cardboard, plastic). Failure to remove these could result in appliance damage when surfaces heat up.

INSTALLATION AT HIGH ALTITUDE

For altitudes over 6000 ft, the product requires installation of a specific kit (WB28X29254 for natural gas, WB28X29255 for propane gas). Follow the instructions included with the kit.

Massachusetts Specific Requirements

This product must be installed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.

When using ball-type gas shut-off valves, they must be the T-handle type.
