Please read this manual carefully before using this equipment.
PREPARATION
INSTALLING BATTERIES
Your megaphone requires eight C batteries (not supplied) for power. For the best performance, alkaline batteries (not supplied) are recommended.
Follow these steps to install the batteries:
- Ensure the SIREN ON/OFF switch on the left side of the megaphone's handle is set to OFF to prevent the alarm from sounding.
- Lift the battery compartment cover's latch and open the cover. [Diagram: Battery compartment cover with a visible latch.]
- Remove the two battery containers and take out any old batteries. Dispose of old batteries promptly; do not bury or burn them. Never mix old and new batteries.
- Install four batteries in each container, as indicated by the polarity markings on the containers.
- Reinstall the two battery containers in the compartment, ensuring the side marked with battery polarity is outward for correct polarity position.
- Close the cover and secure the latch.
Note: If the megaphone's sound weakens, replace the batteries with fresh ones.
Cautions:
- Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.
- Never leave dead or weak batteries in the megaphone.
- If you do not plan to use the megaphone for several days, remove the batteries.
ADJUSTING THE SHOULDER STRAP
The megaphone comes with the shoulder strap attached. Follow these steps to adjust the strap's length:
- Slide the ends of the strap through the buckle and the strap hanger bar. [Diagram: Strap ends being threaded through a buckle and a strap hanger bar.]
- Slide the ends of the strap back through the buckle and the strap hanger bar. Leave enough slack in the strap around the buckle so you can slide the strap back through. [Diagram: Strap ends threaded back through the buckle and hanger bar.]
- Slide the ends of the strap through the buckle again. [Diagram: Strap ends threaded through the buckle a second time.]
- Adjust the strap to the desired length so no slack remains around the buckle. [Diagram: Final strap adjustment.]
Note: To remove the plastic bands that are included for shipping, first remove the buckle, then slide off the bands.
OPERATION
USING THE MEGAPHONE WITH THE MICROPHONE MOUNTED
You can use the megaphone with the microphone mounted if you want to point the megaphone in the desired direction with one hand.
Follow these steps to use the megaphone with the microphone mounted:
- Slide SIREN ON/OFF on the left side of the handle to OFF. [Diagram: SIREN ON/OFF switch shown in the OFF position.]
- Align the slot in the microphone's back with the bracket on the battery compartment cover. Then slide the microphone onto the bracket. [Diagram: Microphone slot aligning with the bracket on the megaphone's body.]
- Make sure the TALK button on the left side of the microphone is not in the LOCK position, since this disables the TALK button on the megaphone's handle. [Diagram: TALK button on microphone, with a mention of a LOCK position.]
- Firmly hold the megaphone and place the microphone about 5 inches from your mouth.
- Press the TALK button on the megaphone and speak into the microphone. Release the TALK button when you are finished speaking. [Diagram: TALK button on the megaphone.]
- Rotate the VOLUME knob on the right side of the megaphone counterclockwise toward 10 to increase, or clockwise toward 0 to decrease the megaphone's sound level. [Diagram: VOLUME knob.]
USING THE MEGAPHONE WITHOUT THE MICROPHONE MOUNTED
For extended use, you can shoulder the megaphone and hold the lightweight microphone (instead of the entire megaphone) in your hand.
Follow these steps to use the megaphone without the microphone mounted:
- Slide SIREN ON/OFF on the left side of the handle to OFF. [Diagram: SIREN ON/OFF switch shown in the OFF position.]
- Place the strap over your shoulder. [Diagram: Person wearing the megaphone with the strap over their shoulder.]
- Place the microphone about 5 inches from your mouth and press the TALK button on the left side of the microphone when you speak.
- To lock the bar in place so you can speak continuously, slide it in the direction of the LOCK arrow until it clicks. Slide the bar to the opposite position to unlock it. [Diagram: TALK bar with a LOCK arrow.]
- Rotate the VOLUME knob on the right side of the microphone counterclockwise toward 10 to increase, or clockwise toward 0 to decrease the megaphone's sound level.
USING THE MEGAPHONE'S SIREN
To turn on the siren, push SIREN ON/OFF to the left. To turn it off, push SIREN ON/OFF to OFF. [Diagram: SIREN ON/OFF switch.]
Warning: Do not point the megaphone directly at someone when you sound the alarm.
USING THE FEEDBACK CONTROL
Your megaphone might cause feedback when the microphone is too close to the speaker, or when you use it indoors. If the microphone is too close to the speaker, move the microphone away from the speaker. [Diagram: Hand holding microphone away from megaphone speaker.]
If you experience feedback problems while using the megaphone indoors, use a small Phillips screwdriver to rotate the FEEDBACK CONTROL beside the nameplate of the battery compartment counterclockwise to reduce feedback. [Diagram: FEEDBACK CONTROL knob with LO and HI indicators.]
Note: Adjusting the FEEDBACK CONTROL also reduces the volume. To increase the volume, rotate the FEEDBACK CONTROL clockwise until the sound is audible without feedback. If you are unsure how to make this adjustment, have a professional electronics technician adjust it for you.
MAINTENANCE
Modifying or tampering with the megaphone's internal components can cause a malfunction and might invalidate the megaphone's warranty. If your megaphone is not performing as it should, take it to your local RadioShack store for assistance.
