Babysense™ 2 Pro
Contactless Baby Breathing Monitor
Now with increased sensitivity
Introduction
This user manual provides detailed instructions for the installation and use of the Babysense 2 Pro, a high-quality, sensitive electronic device for monitoring infant breathing. It is crucial to read and understand this manual before using the product.
Babysense is designed to alert parents or caregivers in case of breathing cessation or a significant decrease in breathing rate, providing peace of mind and enabling timely intervention.
Important Safety Precautions
- Handle the device with care; avoid dropping or impact.
- Follow installation instructions precisely for safe and correct setup.
- Babysense is not a toy; keep it away from children.
- Do not place other children or pets in the crib with the infant.
- Do not use the device if there is electromagnetic interference.
- Portable and mobile RF communication devices may affect the operation of this device.
- Perform a daily operational test, and whenever the monitor is moved, bedding is changed, or the crib is repositioned.
- Avoid directing humidifiers or fans directly at the crib.
- Ensure all excess connecting cables are safely tucked away under the mattress and are not visible or accessible to prevent strangulation hazards.
- Use four new 1.5V AA alkaline batteries.
- Parents and caregivers are strongly advised to learn first aid.
- Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period (more than 3 months).
- Contact the manufacturer's service personnel for any issues with setup, maintenance, or usage.
- Do not use the device if it shows any signs of malfunction, damage, or wear.
- Do not use the device in close proximity to other electronic devices without verifying normal operation in the combined configuration.
Safe Sleep Recommendations
The following are internationally recommended measures for safe infant sleep:
- Always place the baby on their back to sleep.
- Do not smoke in the vicinity of the baby.
- Prevent overheating of the baby's environment.
- Keep all objects that could pose a suffocation hazard away from the baby's crib.
Babysense complements these safety measures.
Product Overview and Functionality
The Babysense 2 Pro is a home breathing monitor for infants up to one year of age. It is not intended for high-risk infants requiring constant medical supervision. The device can be used by trained medical personnel or by untrained users such as parents or caregivers.
The system continuously monitors the baby's breathing and movement. It triggers an audible and visual alarm if no movement is detected for 20 seconds or if the breathing rate drops below 10 breaths per minute. The system utilizes contactless sensor pads placed under the mattress, which do not restrict the baby's movement.
Installation Guide
Follow these steps for proper installation:
- Install Batteries: Remove the battery compartment cover using a flat-head screwdriver. Insert 4 new 1.5V AA alkaline batteries, observing polarity. Replace the cover.
- Position Control Unit Holder: Attach the control unit holder to the crib frame between the side rails as shown in Figure 1.
- Position Sensor Pads:
- For infants not yet crawling, place one sensor pad under the area where the baby sleeps (Figure 2).
- If the infant starts crawling and may move outside the coverage area of a single pad, connect a second sensor pad and position them as shown in Figure 2. Ensure the "THIS SIDE UP" marking is facing upwards.
- Route Sensor Cables: Thread the sensor pad cable(s) through the opening in the holder (Figure 3).
- Connect Cables to Control Unit: Plug the cable end(s) into the "SENSOR" ports on the back of the control unit (Figures 5 & 6). If using only one sensor pad, connect it to any "SENSOR" port. Do not connect any cables to the "DO NOT USE" port.
- Alternative Mounting: If the crib design does not allow for the control unit holder, use the optional hanging hook (Figure 5) to attach the control unit to the bottom edge of the crib.
- Attach Control Unit Holder: Firmly insert the control unit holder into the slot on the back of the control unit (Figures 4 & 5).
- Place Mattress: Position the mattress firmly onto the sensor pads. If the mattress does not make full contact with the sensor pads, or if the crib base is soft, padded, or springy, place a piece of plywood under the sensor pads to ensure firm contact. Ensure the mattress does not become trapped in the crib.
IMPORTANT: To prevent potential strangulation hazards, all excess sensor pad cables must be neatly coiled and secured under the mattress, out of sight and reach.
Operation
Once installed, the Babysense is ready for use. Follow these instructions:
- Place the baby in the crib.
- Turn on the control unit by pressing the On/Off button.
- Verify that the red indicator light briefly illuminates and a double-click sound is heard.
- The green indicator light flashes when breathing and movement are detected.
- An audible and visual alarm will activate if the baby's breathing stops or significantly slows down.
- If the low battery indicator light flashes red, replace the batteries as soon as possible. If accompanied by a clicking sound, replace batteries immediately.
- Turn off the unit by pressing the On/Off button before removing the baby from the crib. Ensure the yellow power-off indicator flashes briefly and no other lights remain on, indicating the unit is off.
Operational Test
Babysense is a highly sensitive device that monitors a sleeping baby's breathing movements through the mattress. Potential malfunctions can arise from technical issues or environmental factors.
Environmental Factors: Factors like drafts, fans, or air conditioning can be misinterpreted as breathing movements, potentially delaying or preventing alarm activation. Perform the operational test daily under the same conditions as actual use, with all other devices turned on.
Daily Test Procedure:
- Do NOT test by removing the baby from the crib and waiting for the alarm.
- Perform the test with an empty crib.
- Turn on the device and step back two paces.
- Ensure the alarm activates within 20 seconds (due to lack of movement). The alarm may sound with or without prior clicking.
- Verify the alarm is audible in all relevant areas.
- If the alarm does not activate within 20 seconds, refer to the troubleshooting section.
- This test must be performed daily and whenever the monitor is moved, bedding is changed, or the crib is repositioned.
Troubleshooting
This section provides solutions for common issues:
Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
Control unit lights do not illuminate after turning on. | Batteries are not inserted correctly or are depleted. | Check battery polarity. Ensure 4 x AA 1.5V alkaline batteries are installed. |
Low battery warning light (red) on the control unit. | Depleted batteries. | Replace all 4 batteries as soon as possible. If accompanied by clicking, replace immediately. |
False alarm within 30 seconds of activation. | Sensor pad is not functioning. Cable is plugged into the "DO NOT USE" port. | Test sensor pad functionality. Ensure cables are connected to the correct "SENSOR" port. |
False alarm after 30 seconds of activation. | Mattress does not contact sensor pads. Object is near sensor pads. Incorrect placement of sensor pads (too close or too far apart). Mattress does not transmit baby's movements (e.g., hard, springy, or air-filled mattress). | Ensure full mattress contact. Remove nearby objects. Adjust sensor pad placement. Use plywood to ensure contact if the mattress is unsuitable. |
Delayed alarm when removing the baby from the crib. | Incorrect performance of the operational test. | Follow the correct operational test procedure as described. |
Alarm does not activate within 20 seconds during a proper performance test. | Environmental factors (drafts, fans, air conditioning, mobile, vibrations, etc.) are being detected. | Identify and eliminate environmental interference sources. Retest. If the issue persists, test the control unit and sensor pads individually as per the detailed instructions in the manual. |
If problems persist after troubleshooting, contact your local distributor.
