Caterpillar 3406 B Engine Timing

Tools Needed:

• Engine Turning Tool (9S9082)
• Timing Pin (6V4186)
• Timing Advance Holding Tool (1U8271)
• Engine Timing Indicator Group (8T5300)
• Diesel Timing Adapter Group (8T5301)

Procedure:

1. Position the No. 1 piston at top center on the compression stroke.
2. Remove the timing advance cover.
3. Loosen nuts and remove the retainer and flyweight spring from the timing advance unit.
4. Loosen bolts holding the timing advance unit together.
5. Tighten bolts to a specific torque to provide clamping force on the fuel pump drive gear.
6. Remove the plug from the fuel injection pump housing.
7. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until the timing pin engages the slot in the fuel pump camshaft.
8. Install the holding tool and adjust the timing advance unit piston.
9. Tighten bolts to a specified torque.
10. Remove the holding tool.
11. Remove the timing pin bolt and timing pin.
12. Install the flyweight spring and retainer.
13. Install the cover and plug.
14. Refer to specific instructions for checking dynamic timing using the indicated tool groups.
