Complying with the Code is a Must
The Australian Building Code mandates that all new homes must be equipped with AS3786:2014 compliant smoke alarms connected to mains power. For existing homes, a working smoke alarm is essential, with a 10-year Lithium battery-powered alarm recommended as a minimum level of protection. Installing working photoelectric smoke alarms ensures customers have the best chance of preventing the devastating effects of house fires.
Smoke Alarms to Suit Every Aussie Home
Clipsal Fire Tek Smoke Alarms are designed for any residential environment. The range offers both surface-mount options and a low-profile, flush-mounted option for a more discreet installation.
Easy to Fit, Hard to Beat:
- 240V Surface Mount Models (755PSMA4 & 755RLPSMA4): Feature an innovative, removable hinged cover for easy access to terminals and backup battery. Multiple mounting points and ample wiring space enhance flexibility, with fit-off contacts automatically providing power upon installation.
- 755LPSMA4 Lithium Battery Powered Alarm: This model is slim, stylish, and simple to install. It features a sealed-in 10-year lithium battery, eliminating the need for annual replacements, and includes built-in wireless interconnection for comprehensive home protection.
- Flush Mount Alarm (755PFM4): Offers an easy-to-install mounting base requiring a 90mm cut-out and large wiring terminals. The alarm unit simply clips in and out for maintenance.
Interconnectivity: Generation 4 surface mount smoke alarms are compatible with Clipsal's 755 series mounting bases, simplifying retrofitting. All Fire Tek alarms, new and old, are fully interconnectable.

Stylish Design
Clipsal Smoke Alarms blend technology with taste, complementing modern home interiors. They are designed for quality, style, and superior protection, offering a modern, sleek, and stylish appearance.
The flush-mount option (755PFM4) is ideal for a subtle look, being 60% smaller and 40% thinner than standard alarms, fitting seamlessly amongst downlights.
Innovative Remote Test/Hush Feature
Optional 755RB and 755RFB2 mounting bases incorporate a remote test/hush feature for enhanced safety and ease of use. This feature can be wired to any momentary switch on a Clipsal switch plate. If activated, the alarm will resume normal operation after approximately 10 minutes. If a fire hazard persists, the alarm will reactivate.
Your Best Connection in Fire Safety
The Clipsal 240V Smoke Alarm range supports hard-wire interconnection for up to 40 units. For situations where running interconnect cables is challenging, a wireless interconnect option is available. The 755RFB2 Wireless Mounting Base allows up to 40 alarms to be wirelessly interconnected and also works with the 755LPSMA4 Lithium battery smoke alarm.
For connectivity with third-party hardware like security systems or emergency exit lighting, the 755RB surface-mounting base offers an integral isolated relay. This relay can be configured to activate upon any interconnect alarm or only the local alarm, enabling identification and communication to other systems.

Why Choose Photoelectric?
A significant number of home fires occur annually in Australia. Fire hazards pose the highest risk when occupants are sleeping, with smouldering fires being the most common type encountered. As the sense of smell diminishes during sleep, early fire warning is critical for escape. Photoelectric smoke alarms provide the earliest detection of fire hazards, enabling occupants to escape quickly and safely. They are also recommended by Australian Fire Departments and are free from radioactive material, making them environmentally friendly.

Smoke Alarm Maintenance
Like other home electrical accessories, smoke alarms require regular maintenance for efficient and effective operation.
Test the Smoke Alarm and Battery Every Month
Regular testing ensures optimal protection. Press the Test/Hush button on the unit or use the remote Test/Hush switch (available on 240V surface mounting bases). To check battery condition, switch off the mains power; the alarm should sound, indicating an acceptable battery. If it fails to respond, replace the battery immediately. Clean the alarm monthly to prevent dust or insect ingress, which can cause false alarms.
Replace the Battery Every Year
Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced annually. Customers can choose a memorable date, such as a birthday or the start/end of daylight saving. Alternatively, installing a Lithium battery powered alarm or a 240V Rechargeable lithium alarm eliminates the need for battery replacement.
Replace the Smoke Alarm Every 10 Years
All smoke alarms have a service life of 10 years. After this period, the entire unit must be replaced.
Smoke Alarms in the Home
The Building Code of Australia mandates smoke alarm installation outside sleeping areas and at least one on each level of new homes, interconnected. (Always consult local fire safety regulations for requirements beyond the building code.) In Queensland (QLD), new homes approved after January 1, 2017, require photoelectric mains-powered smoke alarms in every bedroom, interconnected. By January 1, 2027, all existing homes in QLD must have either lithium battery or mains-powered alarms. Clipsal recommends installing multiple smoke alarms for optimum family protection. Australia-wide, interconnected smoke alarms are mandatory for new homes since May 2014.
Careful consideration of smoke alarm locations is advised to avoid false alarms or nuisance tripping. It is recommended to install an alarm in every room (excluding kitchens, laundries, and bathrooms) and interconnect them for maximum protection.
