2.0 Description

The Clipsal Sunset Switch Series offers high-quality, two-wire, weather-protected photoelectric sensors with preset timer and timer disable facilities. These products are designed to automatically activate lighting at sunset, ensuring illuminated outdoor areas after dark for safety and security. They are suitable for domestic, commercial, and industrial installations, including garden lighting, verandahs, car parks, street lighting, advertising signs, and perimeter lighting for business premises.

The Sunset Switch is a "Two-Wire" device, requiring no Neutral connection. It features a powerful 10AX switching capability, suitable for a wide range of load types, including incandescent, inductive, and fluorescent loads.

3.0 Features

* Two-Wire devices may require power factor correction capacitors to be fitted, or a 31CAP Load Correction Device. Refer to the "Special Loads" section for more information.

4.0 Operation

A Sunset Switch automatically operates lighting loads after dark when the ambient light falls below a pre-determined level (factory set to around 20 lux), typically coinciding with sunset. Lights turn 'ON' at dusk and remain on until the pre-set timer period elapses or until dawn, whichever occurs first. No seasonal adjustment is needed.

The automatic timer functions can be disabled for manual operation. The unit supports both Override ON and Override OFF functions, allowing the load to remain ON or be temporarily turned OFF as needed. (Refer to Section 7.2 for further information).

5.0 Installation

The Sunset Switch should be positioned on an exterior surface facing away from any direct artificial light. It should not be exposed to direct sunlight to prevent exceeding the maximum operating temperature, which could degrade performance. The installation must prevent artificial light from deactivating the switch, which could cause controlled lights to blink. Positioning the unit outside, even when operating interior lights, is recommended. To avoid interference with the sensing eye, position the unit out of normal reach.

If mounted in an exposed position, seal all entries into the mounting box with a silicone sealant.

7.0 Wiring Diagrams

7.1 Sunset Switch Operation

The Two-Wire Sunset Switch is wired as shown in the figure below. Note that upon initial power application or after a power failure/lamp failure, the Sunset Switch requires up to 10 seconds of warm-up time. During this period, the load will not turn on, even if the ambient light is below the operating point. The load will remain off until the light level rises above the lux switching threshold and then falls again.

7.2 Timer Override Facility

Automatic switching operations can be overridden manually:

OVERRIDE ON: Bypass the unit via a switch between the LINE and LOAD terminals for manual ON operation.

OVERRIDE OFF: Temporarily disable the pre-set timer function by connecting the 'TIMER DISABLE' terminal to Neutral via a momentary switch. This is a one-time operation, useful when lighting needs to remain OFF when dark. Normal automatic operation resumes the following day.

WARNING:

8.0 Special Loads

8.1 Product Selection

Select the appropriate product for your application. The 31VSSR and 56SSR are Two-Wire devices switching a limited range of load types without special consideration. The 56PEDD3 is a Three-Wire device requiring a neutral connection and capable of switching a wider range of load types.

Catalogue Number Neutral Required Maximum Load* 31CAP Required for some Load Types
31VSSR NO 10AX YES
56SSR NO 10AX YES
31VSSR3 YES 10AX NO

* Please refer to Technical Specifications for further information about compatible load types.

8.2 Handling Special Loads

SMALL LOADS (<5W): Two-Wire Sunset Switch products can only drive loads greater than 5W. For smaller loads, a 31CAP Load Correction Device is required in parallel with the load (e.g., for a single contactor).

LOADS WHICH ARE SENSITIVE TO LEAKAGE CURRENTS: If a Two-Wire device is used with a load that cannot provide enough continuous current in the off-state, or is sensitive to high off-state leakage current (e.g., relays, contactors, loads with built-in electronic control), a 31CAP Load Correction Device must be connected in parallel with the load.

SMALL (NON-POWER FACTOR CORRECTED) FLUORESCENT LOADS: When a 31CAP is fitted, some small non-power factor corrected fluorescent loads may be controlled using a Two-Wire Sunset Switch. Success varies by manufacturer. Recommend testing before installation. Installation must comply with local wiring rules.

[Neutral] --- [Sunset Switch] --- [Load] --- [31CAP Load Correction Device]

Note: The 56PEDD3 is a Three-Wire device and switches the load using an internal relay. Power is not drawn through the load, so the 31CAP is not required.

9.0 Timer Settings

WARNING: For safety reasons, setup should be performed with the Sunset Switch isolated from the main supply.

9.1 Timer Adjustment Settings

Timer settings are adjusted using an 8-way micro switch accessible from the back of the unit through an enclosure window. The functions of the individual switches are shown below:

Diagram:

Timer Intervals: [15min] [30min] [1hr] [2hr] [4hr] [8hr] [n/c] [n/c]

Switches: [8] [7] [6] [5] [4] [3] [2] [1]

The switches marked 'n/c' are not in use.

To set the time interval, turn the appropriate switch 'ON'. The total time-out period is the sum of all Timer Intervals set to 'ON'.

Note that only six switching elements are used. Switches marked "n/c" have no effect when set to ON or OFF.

DO NOT set all Timer Interval switches to 'OFF', even if using the Timer Disable facility. This setting is reserved for manufacturing testing.

9.2 Example Settings

Required Time Delay: 6 hours and 30 minutes (6.5 hours).

  1. Initially set all switches to OFF.
  2. Set the '4hr' switch ON (highest value less than 6.5 hours). Remaining time: 6.5 - 4 = 2.5 hours.
  3. Set the '2hr' switch ON (next highest value less than 2.5 hours). Remaining time: 2.5 - 2 = 0.5 hours.
  4. Set the '30min' switch ON. Total time set: 4hr + 2hr + 30min = 6 hours and 30 minutes.

Diagram:

Timer Intervals: [15min] [30min] [1hr] [2hr] [4hr] [8hr] [n/c] [n/c]

Switches: [8] [7] [6] [5] [4] [3] [2] [1]

Result: The time set is 4hr + 2hr + 30min = 6 hours and 30 minutes.
