Introduction
The JBL OnBeat Xtreme™ speaker docking station delivers high-quality sound for your iPod, iPhone, iPad, or other Bluetooth®-enabled devices. Built-in Bluetooth technology allows you to play and control your music wirelessly from anywhere within a 30-foot radius. You can wirelessly stream high-quality audio and even make and receive phone calls. The JBL OnBeat Xtreme's rotating docking connector allows you to orient your iPod, iPhone, or iPad with its screen in portrait or landscape mode. With the included USB cable, you can connect the JBL OnBeat Xtreme docking station to your computer to charge and sync your iPod, iPhone, or iPad with your iTunes library.
Compatibility
The JBL OnBeat Xtreme system is compatible with most Bluetooth-enabled devices, music players, mobile phones, and portable computers. It supports Bluetooth A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile), and HFP (Hands-Free Profile), enabling the system to stream high-quality audio and function as a speakerphone. A stereo Aux connection also allows you to enjoy high-quality audio from a variety of devices such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), laptops, and satellite radio receivers.

Carefully unpack your speaker docking station and confirm that all the elements shown are included: JBL OnBeat Xtreme speaker docking station, power cable*, remote control, adapter for iPod touch/iPhone, adapter for iPad, and USB cable.
Connections
Fitting iPod/iPhone/iPad Adapter Fests
Your JBL OnBeat Xtreme speaker docking station comes with two adapter fests: one for iPod touch/iPod classic/iPhone devices and another for iPad devices. (NOTE: iPod nano models do not require an adapter fest.)
Attach the appropriate adapter fest to the JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit as shown below. Rotate the rubber end pieces as shown to accommodate different iPad models and devices with third-party skins.
For iPod touch/iPhone: Gently bend the fest slightly.
For iPad:
- For iPad 1: Attach the adapter fest.
- For iPad 2: Attach the adapter fest.
- For iPad 2 with Smart Cover and for devices with third-party skins: Gently bend the fest slightly.
* The power cable varies by region.
Connect to an Auxiliary Device
If you intend to use your JBL OnBeat Xtreme system with another audio source, plug one end of a 3.5mm (1/8") stereo cable (not included) into the JBL OnBeat Xtreme Aux IN port and plug the other end into the audio source's audio output or headphone output.

Connect to iTunes
Connect the included USB cable to the JBL OnBeat Xtreme USB port and to a USB port on your computer where your iTunes library is located. This allows you to sync a docked iPod/iPhone/iPad device with iTunes (see Syncing with iTunes, on page 10).

Connect to a TV
If you wish to view videos or photos from your iPod, iPhone, or iPad device on a TV, plug one end of a composite video cable (not included) into the JBL OnBeat Xtreme Video OUT port and plug the other end into your TV's composite video input.

Connect to Power
Plug the included power cable into the JBL OnBeat Xtreme AC IN port and into a working electrical outlet. The system will enter standby mode (the Power button LED will glow amber). See Power Button, on page 4, for more information.

Using Your JBL OnBeat Xtreme
Controls

Power Button: The Power button has multiple functions:
- When the JBL OnBeat Xtreme is in standby mode, press and hold the Power button for less than two seconds to turn the system on. The Power button LED will glow white.
- When the JBL OnBeat Xtreme is powered on, press and hold the Power button for less than two seconds to put the system into standby mode. The Power button LED will glow amber. While in standby mode, the system remains connected to a Bluetooth device and will automatically turn on if a connected Bluetooth device receives a phone call.
- When the JBL OnBeat Xtreme is powered on, press and hold the Power button for more than two seconds to put the system into eco-standby mode. The Power button LED will turn off. While in eco-standby mode, the Bluetooth module turns off to reduce power consumption. NOTE: The JBL OnBeat Xtreme will not automatically enter eco-standby mode.
Volume Up/Down Buttons: Press these buttons to increase or decrease the volume. Press both buttons simultaneously to enter or exit mute mode.
Source Select Button: Press this button to cycle through the audio sources: Bluetooth, iPod/iPhone/iPad docking station, aux input. The Source Select LED changes color to indicate the selected audio source. See Power and Source Select LEDs, on page 9.
Bluetooth Button: Press this button to answer a phone call and to perform other Bluetooth functions. See Bluetooth Pairing, on page 6; and Receiving a Phone Call from a Bluetooth-Enabled Device, and Making a Phone Call from a Bluetooth-Enabled Device, on page 7.
Remote Control Functions
You can use the JBL OnBeat Xtreme remote control to turn the JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit on and off, change the volume, select music from your docked device, change the audio source, and adjust EQ settings.

* Press the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons simultaneously to mute (silence) and unmute the unit's sound.
Bluetooth Pairing
Before you can use your JBL OnBeat Xtreme system with a Bluetooth-enabled device, you must pair it with the respective device. NOTE: The maximum distance for Bluetooth functionality is approximately 30 feet.
To pair your JBL OnBeat Xtreme system with your device:
- Ensure your JBL OnBeat Xtreme system is powered on (the Power LED glows white).
- Ensure the JBL OnBeat Xtreme is in Bluetooth pairing mode (the Source Select LED blinks blue). If the LED does not blink blue, press the Source Select button repeatedly until the LED begins to blink blue.
- Put your Bluetooth-enabled device into pairing mode so that both devices can "see" each other. (Refer to your Bluetooth-enabled device's user manual for guidelines and details on how to put it into pairing mode.) The JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit will be represented as "OnBeat XT" on your Bluetooth-enabled device.
- If your device prompts you, enter the JBL OnBeat Xtreme password, which is 0000.
- The JBL OnBeat Xtreme system is paired with the Bluetooth device and ready for use when the Source Select button stops blinking and glows solid blue. The JBL OnBeat Xtreme will remain paired with the Bluetooth device even if you change the source or put the device into standby mode.
NOTE: Bluetooth pairing between two devices does not need to be repeated after a successful initial pairing, unless the JBL OnBeat Xtreme system has been removed from the Bluetooth-enabled device's Bluetooth device list or if the JBL OnBeat Xtreme's power cable has been disconnected. While the JBL OnBeat Xtreme is in Bluetooth connected mode, you can force the unit into Bluetooth pairing mode by pressing and holding the Source Select button for at least two seconds. (The Source Select LED will blink blue).
Listening to Music from a Bluetooth-Enabled Device
- Ensure your JBL OnBeat Xtreme system is paired with your Bluetooth-enabled device (see Bluetooth Pairing, to the left).
- Set your JBL OnBeat Xtreme system to Bluetooth source mode by pressing the Source Select button repeatedly until its LED glows blue.
- Go to your Bluetooth-enabled device's music player and play music. Refer to your Bluetooth-enabled device's user manual for guidelines and details on how to use its music player and transfer music via Bluetooth technology.
- Use your Bluetooth-enabled device to navigate your music player.
Phone Calls
Receiving a Phone Call from a Bluetooth-Enabled Device
1. Ensure your JBL OnBeat Xtreme system is paired (see Bluetooth Pairing, on page 6).
2. When you hear your Bluetooth-enabled device's ringtone from the JBL OnBeat Xtreme system, press the Bluetooth button to answer the phone call.
- To reject an incoming phone call: Press and hold the Bluetooth button on the JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit for two seconds.
- To accept another incoming call while putting the first call on hold: Press the Bluetooth button.
- To reject another incoming call while continuing with the first call: Press and hold the Bluetooth button on the JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit for two seconds.
The JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit's built-in microphone allows you to use it as a speakerphone.
3. When the phone call is over, press the Bluetooth button to end the phone call.
Making a Phone Call from a Bluetooth-Enabled Device
1. Ensure your JBL OnBeat Xtreme system is paired (see Bluetooth Pairing, on page 6).
2. When there is no active call or incoming call, you can make a phone call from the JBL OnBeat Xtreme system.
3. When the phone call is over, press the Bluetooth button to end the phone call.
- To mute a phone call (silence): Press both Volume buttons on the JBL OnBeat Xtreme system. To unmute: Press one of the Volume buttons on the JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit.
Docking Devices
Docking an iPod/iPhone/iPad Device
NOTE: When docking an iPod, iPhone, or iPad device, you must disable the device's "Shake to Shuffle" function. Otherwise, the JBL OnBeat Xtreme system's bass energy may activate the device's shuffle trigger, causing songs to change abruptly.
- To dock an iPod or iPhone, place the device into the 30-pin connector with the device tilted forward.
- Once the device is properly seated in the connector, push it back into the docking station.

To dock an iPad device, press the release button on the back of the docking station and extend the lower support of the docking station, then follow steps 1 and 2 above.

Rotating the Docking Station
When an iPod/iPhone/iPad device is docked in the JBL OnBeat Xtreme speaker docking station, you can rotate the docking station to landscape mode.
To rotate the docking station to landscape mode, turn it 90 degrees counter-clockwise. To rotate it back to portrait mode, turn it 90 degrees clockwise. The docking station will hold the device securely in place in both portrait and landscape positions.

Playing Video and Image Files
When you dock your iPod, iPhone, or iPad device into the JBL OnBeat Xtreme system, its video output will automatically be turned off, even if it was on before you docked the device.
To turn on the JBL OnBeat Xtreme system's video output, press and hold the Up button on the remote control for at least two seconds. The JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit's Source Select LED will blink white once. The video from your iPod, iPhone, or iPad device will play on the connected TV. To turn off the video output, press and hold the remote control's Down button for at least two seconds. The JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit's Source Select LED will blink white twice.
EQ Settings
The JBL OnBeat Xtreme docking station has five equalizer (EQ) modes that adjust the sound quality for different types of programs: Music (default), Movie, Chat, Internet Radio, or Game, in that order.
Use the remote control to change the EQ setting for the active source:
- Press and hold the Enter button on the remote control. The EQ will switch to the next setting (Movie) and the Source Select LED will blink to indicate that the EQ setting has changed.
- Each press-and-hold of the Enter button cycles the EQ to the next mode: Movie, Chat, Internet Radio, or Game. The Source Select LED will blink each time the EQ changes.
- When the Source Select LED blinks twice, the EQ has returned to Music mode.
Power and Source Select LEDs
The Power LED changes color to indicate the status of the JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit. The Source Select LED changes color to indicate and provide information about the active source.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Syncing with iTunes
NOTE: Before attempting to sync your iPod/iPhone/iPad device with iTunes, ensure that both your device and iTunes are updated with the latest software version.
- Place your iPod/iPhone/iPad device into the JBL OnBeat Xtreme docking station's connector. Ensure you place the device into the connector correctly so that it sits properly.
- Use your computer's iTunes software to sync the device with iTunes.
- When you are finished syncing, remove the device from the docking station.
Charging a Docked iPod/iPhone/iPad Device
The JBL OnBeat Xtreme speaker docking station will charge your iPod or iPhone device when it is docked. NOTE: The JBL OnBeat Xtreme speaker docking station will not necessarily charge a docked iPad device via its USB connection to a PC. If the iPad device charges when connected directly to the PC via USB, it will charge when docked in the JBL OnBeat Xtreme speaker docking station. If the iPad device does not charge when connected directly to the PC via USB, it will not charge when docked in the JBL OnBeat Xtreme speaker docking station.
Upgrading Software
Your JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit has upgradeable software that allows you to take advantage of new features and improvements as they become available. Visit www.jbl.com for information on checking your unit's software version and instructions on how to upgrade to a newer software version.
Resetting System Settings
You can restore the JBL OnBeat Xtreme unit's default settings at any time.
- Ensure that the power is on. (The Power LED glows white).
- Press and hold the Power and Source Select buttons simultaneously for approximately five seconds.
JBL OnBeat App
The JBL OnBeat application is downloadable and free from the iTunes App Store. It includes a music browser, an alarm clock, and EQ functions that allow you to select the best sound for your music, movies, games, chat, or internet radio.
