Installation Procedure
1. Installing Windows 7
1.1. Booting from Installation DVD
The Z220 and Windows 7 64-bit support UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). While installation is possible in UEFI mode, this guide explains manual installation in legacy mode.
a) After starting the Workstation and seeing the HP logo on the monitor, press the [F9] key to launch the Boot Menu.
b) Once the Boot Menu is displayed, insert the Windows 7 64-bit installation media into the Workstation's optical drive.
Use the arrow keys to select [Legacy Boot Sources], then [ATAPI CD/DVD Drive], then [SATA X], and press [Enter] to boot from the optical drive in legacy mode.
If your internal HDD has partitions formatted with NTFS, you may see a message like "Attempting Boot From CD-ROM. Press any key to boot from CD or DVD...". Press the [Enter] key within this message to boot from the optical media. If no key is pressed, the system will boot from the HDD instead.
Note: Selecting an optical drive under [EFI Boot Sources] will launch the Windows 7 installer in UEFI mode.
c) The Windows 7 installation wizard will start.
1.2. Windows Installation
a) Upon booting from the DVD, the Windows 7 installation wizard will appear. Set the [Installation language], [Time and currency format], and [Keyboard or input method] settings, then click [Next].
b) Click [Install Now].
c) Review the Microsoft Software License Terms, check the box to agree, and click [Next].
d) Select the installation type. Click [Custom (advanced)].
e) You will be prompted to select where to install Windows 7. Choose the drive for installation and click [Next].
Note: Windows 7 typically creates a ~100MB "System Reserved" partition for bootloader information and BitLocker.
[Screenshot Description: A window titled "Select where to install Windows" shows Disk 0 with Partition 1 labeled "System Reserved" (100.0 MB) and Partition 2 (29.9 GB). Disk 1 shows unallocated space (120.0 GB). Options include "Refresh", "Delete", "Format", "New", "Load driver".]
f) The screen will show "Installing Windows...". The installation process will begin, involving several restarts.
1.3. Windows Setup
a) After the system restarts, the Windows Setup wizard will appear. Enter your desired username and computer name, then click [Next].
b) If you wish to set a password for your user account, enter the password in both the "Password" and "Confirm password" fields. You must also provide a password hint. If you do not wish to set a password, leave these fields blank and click [Next].
c) If prompted for a product key, enter it or leave it blank to enter it later, then click [Next]. The product key is a 25-digit code.
[Screenshot Description: A window titled "Windows Activation" shows options for online activation and product key entry.]
d) Choose your preferred settings for "Computer protection and improving Windows features" from the three options provided.
e) Confirm or set the date, time, and time zone, then click [Next].
f) If network adapters are detected, select the appropriate network location (e.g., Home, Work, Public).
g) Windows setup is now complete. You can log in to the desktop. If you set a password, enter it. Otherwise, you will log in automatically.
Finally, remove the Windows 7 installation DVD from the drive.
2. Device Driver Setup
2.1. Verifying Devices in Device Manager (Before Driver Installation)
a) Open Device Manager by navigating to [Start] > [Control Panel] > [Device Manager].
Immediately after a manual Windows 7 installation, with standard hardware configuration and factory BIOS settings, many devices may not have their drivers installed correctly. These often appear under categories like "Other devices" or specific controllers.
[Screenshot Description: A screenshot of the Windows Device Manager window is shown. It displays a tree structure of hardware categories, including "DVD/CD-ROM drives", "Keyboards", "Monitors", "Processors", "Disk drives", "Display adapters", "Sound, video and game controllers", "Network adapters", "Universal Serial Bus controllers", and "Storage controllers". Several items are shown with yellow exclamation marks, indicating missing drivers.]
2.2. Installing Necessary Device Drivers
Install the following drivers from the HP support site, following the installation wizard:
a) Intel Ivy Bridge Chipset Drivers (e.g., sp57567.exe). Reboot Windows after installation if prompted.
b) Intel AMT LMS_SOL for AMT 8.xx (e.g., sp57585.exe).
c) Intel Rapid Storage Technology Utility and Driver for Microsoft Windows (e.g., sp57584.exe). Reboot Windows after installation if prompted.
d) Intel PRO/1000 Drivers Release 15.7 for Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit) (e.g., sp56476.exe). Reboot Windows after installation if prompted.
e) Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver (e.g., sp57571.exe). Note: You may see an "Installation failed" message on the screen for this driver, but USB 3.0 should function correctly.
f) Install the graphics driver appropriate for your workstation:
- For NVIDIA graphics cards: NVIDIA Quadro Professional Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows 7 64-Bit Operating Systems.
- For AMD graphics cards: ATI FireGL Unified Graphics Driver (Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit and Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit).
- For Intel graphics cards: Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 Operating Systems (64-bit).
If no specific version is mentioned, use the latest available version of the graphics driver.
Note: After extracting the Softpaq, Internet Explorer may launch. Click the link on the browser to start the graphics driver installer.
2.3. Recommended Driver Updates
While the standard drivers should cover most hardware, it is recommended to verify and use the optimal driver versions based on your specific environment.
Onboard Audio Driver: The driver included on the Windows 7 installation DVD may be an older version. For the latest version, download the "Realtek High-Definition Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows 7" (e.g., sp57506.exe) from the HP driver site and install it.
The manual installation of Windows 7 64-bit on the Z220 is now complete.
Appendix: Disk Initialization Method
This appendix explains how to initialize a hard disk if necessary for Windows 7 installation.
This example assumes a machine with two hard disks: Hard Disk 0 (80GB, formatted, with system area) and Hard Disk 1 (120GB, unformatted). We will initialize Hard Disk 0 and install Windows 7 on it.
⚠️ Warning: Initializing a disk will erase all existing data. Ensure you back up any necessary data to external media before proceeding with caution.
